I purchased this book for a class.The written material is exactly what I needed, but the workmanship of the paperback version is really poor.I knew I was purchasing a paperback, but I didn't expect to get so little for $100.Some pages are already falling out because the glue binding is so shotty.

useless for professional practice
This book was required study for a graduate seminar course in waterquality modeling.After leaving graduate school it was found that therewere many more complete and useable models in existence than mentioned inthis book which seemed out of date by comparison.I found that the book byThomann and Mueller was much clearer in explaining the fundamentalprocesses in water quality analysis, and had much more practicalinformation.

Out of date
The text does not consider any of the combined three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models such as developed by the corps of engineers or like RMA-10 that have come into existence in the past ten years, or their application to important cases.The level of water quality modeling considered is well below the state of the art that existed even at the time of publication.

Out dated and no longer state of the art
The water quality modeling presented in this book is vintage 1983 and based on the EPA WASP-Eutro.It does not include the particulate forms of the nutrient constituents as in present more realistic models. It ignores the important role of zooplankton in recycling nutrients to the particulate pools. It treats almost every waterbody as if it were a two layered system, and ignores realistic waterbody hydrodynamics and real time varying conditions.It does not address state of the art methods of using combined hydrodynamic and transport water quality modeling as emphasized by more experienced modelers such as Hamrick and Seng. ... I read this book while in the process of taking a class called "Issuses in Aquatic Issues". I felt that the book is a detailed overview of problems that are with todays water quality.It was a bookthat delt with issues such as water quality management, land effects,pollution effects, ag./farm land usage, groundwater, hydrologic cycles andwetlands. (to mention just a few)The book was written to an easy readerslevel, but the chapters dragged with examples to prove points.I used thisbook as a textbook, yet this book would be ok to the average reader who isintersted in this field.Like i said, it is an overview of major issues inaqutic ecology.This book contains many many examples from reasearchs donein this field of study.Which i feel was the strong point of the book. The case study results also suggest that empirical valuation results are sensitive to study design effects such as the particular statistical technique used to estimate mean or median values. These results suggest that estimating water quality values using benefits transfer techniques is problematic, but perhaps feasible with improved data and valuation models.
