Excerpt: The Israeli West Bank barrier is a security barrier being constructed by the State of Israel. It consists of a network made mostly of fences with vehicle-barrier trenches surrounded by an on average 60 meter wide exclusion area (90%). In some areas the barrier is an 8 meter tall concrete wall. (10%). The barrier is built mainly in the West Bank and partly along the 1949 Armistice line, or "Green Line" between Israel and Palestinian West Bank. In April 2006, the length of the barrier approved by the Israeli government was 703 kilometers (436 miles). In August 2008, approximately 58.04% had been constructed, 8.96% was under construction, and construction had not yet begun on 33% of the barrier. The Jerusalem Post reported in July 2007 that the barrier may not be completed until 2010, seven years after it was originally supposed to be finished. The barrier is highly controversial. Supporters argue that the barrier is necessary to protect Israeli civilians from Palestinian terrorism, including the suicide bombing attacks that increased significantly during the Al-Aqsa Intifada; There has been a reduced number of incidents of suicide bombings since the construction of the barrier. Supporters argue that this is indicative of the barrier being effective in preventing such attacks. Opponents of the barrier object that the route substantially deviates from the Green Line into the occupied territories captured by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967. They argue that the barrier is an illegal attempt to annex Palestinian land under the guise of security, violates international law, has the effect of pre-empting final status negotiations, and severely restricts Palestinians who live nearby,...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=367929 ... Chapters: Banks, Lancashire. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 132. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt:Banks (pronounced ) is a large coastal village in Lancashire, England. It lies just south of the Ribble estuary and four miles (6 km) north-east of the town of Southport. The village is administered by West Lancashire Borough Council, and by North Meols parish council for parochial matters. It falls in the South Ribble parliamentary constituency. According to the 2001 census, the population of Banks was 3,792. Banks is the largest of the villages of the parish of North Meols on the West Lancashire coastal plain. Like most villages in the area, it was primarily an agricultural village thanks to the excellent soil, although there was also noticeable fishing activity for many years. Production of flowers and vegetables is still common in the farms which surround the village; however the proximity of the towns of Southport and Preston have led to Banks recent rapid expansion as a dormitory town for commuters. The name 'Banks' has been used to describe the area for hundreds of years (the exact date is uncertain). The name is believed to have been named after the many artificial embankments that where built in the north of the village to protect the village from winter floods due to the River Ribble's tides. The old embankments can be seen on the left side of the road when entering Banks at Marsh Road and can be seen in greater size further along at the end of George's Lane. However, these embankments became useless when the River Ribble started to retreat in the 1900s and larger ones are now in place further north creating extra farmland. Local people often refer to the village as Bonks (pronounced ) ; this is the retained Middle English pronunciation of the village name. The earliest r...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4492933 ... Product Description

Adequate management of water resources is important, specifically when resources are limited. A starting point for adequate management of water is knowledge about water use. One way of expressing water use is through the concept of water footprint which can be used to determine the level of water scarcity of a specific country.

Water scarcity is increasing all over the world because of growing population and increasing demands. Countries with limited water resources are urgently in need for a new approach towards water management by shifting from the "use and dispose" approach to the "use, treat and reuse" approach. The book proposes a framework for the sustainable management of scarce water resources. The approach is based on the application of Cleaner Production thinking to water management.

This book focuses on the West Bank in Palestine. The West bank suffers from extreme water scarcity, has (for political reasons) less water than is naturally available, and anticipates an increase in demand for water for reasons of population and economic growth. Therefore, the West Bank needs to shift away from the present approach to water. The book proposes a set of alternatives for sustainable water management in the domestic, agricultural and industrial sectors in the West Bank.

Implementing a combination of water managemen alternatives as proposed in this book will put the water management in the West Bank in Palestine on the sustainable track.

Product Description

At the heart of the current Palestinian-Israeli struggle lies the question of territorial partition and the establishment of sovereignty. The Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority negotiated interim borders, but new permanent checkpoints and border closures became severe problems and contributed to the failure of negotiations and the eruption of a new uprising. Crossing the Green Line Between the West Bank and Israel is about passing through these checkpoints--specifically those that mark the Green Line, the geopolitical border separating the West Bank from Israel proper--and how their existence affects the daily life of West Bank Palestinians.

With unparalleled access to firsthand accounts, Avram S. Bornstein explores the complex relationship between Israeli Arabs, Jews, and West Bank Palestinians in the best tradition of ethnographic inquiry and participant observation. By describing the everyday lives of West Bank Palestinians with whom he lived and worked, Bornstein reveals that Palestinian agriculture and industry have become so severely restricted by Israeli border policies that tens of thousands of Palestinians must work for Israelis, crossing the border illegally every day to get to their jobs. The divide can be felt profoundly by those Palestinians forced to live in the West Bank, as their socioeconomic situations differ dramatically from those of relatives living only a few miles on the other side of the border.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Na'omi (Hebrew: ????????) is a moshav shitufi and Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Located in the Jordan Valley three kilometres north of Hisham's Palace, it falls under the jurisdiction of Bik'at HaYarden Regional Council. In 2006 it had a population of 129. The village was established in 1982, and was initially named Na'ama due to its proximity to the Arab village of an-Nuway'imah, before being renamed after the biblical figure of Naomi. Naomi (??????? "Pleasant; agreeable; my sweet", Standard Hebrew No?omi, Tiberian Hebrew No??mî) is Ruth's mother-in-law in the Old Testament Book of Ruth. Later, she called herself Mara, or "bitter" (Ruth 1:20-21): "She said to them, 'Do not call me Naomi call me "Mara" (???), for the Almightyhas dealt very bitterly with me.'" referring to the death of her husband (Elimelech) and her two sons (Mahlon and Chilion). Product Description
Exiled in Paris provides a compelling look at the personalities who fueled the literary and philosophical dramas of postwar Paris: James Baldwin, Alexander Trocchi, Boris Vian, Maurice Girodias, and many others. James Campbell provides a fresh look at Samuel Beckett's early career; reveals the facts behind the publication of the scandalous best-seller The Story of O; and tells the poignant story of Richard Wright's years in exile. He captures the sense of deliverance that Wright, so accustomed to daily humiliations in his own country, experienced during his sojourn on the Left Bank, where, for the first time in his life, he was treated as a great man of letters. Here, too, are all the circumstances surrounding Wright's mysterious death, which many close to him regarded as suspicious. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Porn in Paris
I purchased this book expecting to learn more about famous ex-pat authors living in post WW2 Paris. Indeed, the first part of the book, which concentrated on Richard Wright and James Baldwin, fully met my expectations. However after that the book details in minute detail the development of pornographic literature (heterosexual and homosexual)in Paris - authors and publishers. At some point I had enough and abandoned ship. It was just too boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading
After the end of the Second World War, a number of African Americans, including many of our most talented intellectuals, decided that America wasjust not a sufficiently hospitable home. Those who could left for Europe. Many, landed in Paris, which provided a far more civilizedsociety.

Literary giants like James Baldwin, Richard Wright and otherintellectuals found a place where their worth was determined by things moresignificant than skin color. This is the story of theirexperiences.
