Product Description
This book was written to assist scientists, engineers, technicians and other resource managers in the evaluation of wetland boundaries and characteristics. Powerful tools - GIS, mapping, remote sensing - are described and demonstrated using practical applications and combined to yield landscape ecological data, and ecological risk assessments. Using numerous technical methods, Wetland Landscape Characterization shows you how to evaluate the presence of wetlands, and the stressors, exposures and ecological systems - streams, lakes, terrestial - that influence their condition. A vital component of the book is the variety of quality assurance/quality control and accuracy assessment techniques presented throughout the text. A thorough understanding of these methods is critical to the success of your project. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and Badly Out-of-Date
I agree with the first reviewer. The book Wetland Landscape Characterization lacks detail sufficient to make it useful.

It is very similar to another book by the author about Watershed characterization and uses much the same material. They are practically the same book in many ways.

Many important wetlands are completely ignored and the ones that are featured are not significant.

Lastely, the information is badly dated in this rapidly changing technology. There are critical new sensors, satellites, statistical approaches and methods not mentioned in the book because they are new.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ankle deep, but has some useful information
Though the book does not go into great detail, it does have useful information hidden in the text.I would have liked to see a better treating of GIS, like pratical examples and real case studies.

A lot of the general information can be found on the web. What would make this book better would be some geostatistical examples, color photos as opposed to low res black and white ones, and a bigger section on GIS and remote sensing. ... Read more

Product Description
Birds of the Wetlands combines stunning photography with snapshot prose pictures of some of the most important and spectacular wetlands in the world. The beauty of the bird life is set against telling explanations of how wetland habitats work and of their place in the international conservation scene.
Still a haven for huge breeding populations of herons, storks, ibises, spoonbills, anhingas, cormorants, wildfowl, waders, and birds of prey, wetlands are some of the world's last and best wild places.
Based on the author's own wide experience, this book considers the important questions of conservation in these increasingly threatened environments, highlighting both future dangers and past mistakes, all discussed in a global context.
Beautifully illustrated throughout in color from the author's own collection of photographs taken during many visits to these areas over the past thirty years, this spectacular book is the work of one of the world's most-travelled authorities on wetland birds.

Key Features
* Contains a superb collection of bird photographs

Editorial Review

Product Description
Tidal salt marshes are viewed as critical habitats for theproduction of fish and shellfish. As a result, considerablelegislation has been promulgated to conserve and protect thesehabitats, and much of it is in effect today. The relatively youngscience of ecological engineering has also emerged, and there are nowattempts to reverse centuries-old losses by encouraging sound wetlandrestoration practices. Today, tens of thousands of hectares ofdegraded or isolated coastal wetlands are being restored worldwide.Whether restored wetlands reach functional equivalency to `natural'systems is a subject of heated debate. Equally debatable is the paradigm that depicts tidal salt marshes asthe `great engine' that drives much of the secondary production incoastal waters. This view was questioned in the early 1980s byinvestigators who noted that total carbon export, on the order of 100to 200 g m--2 y--1 was of much lowermagnitude than originally thought. These authors also recognized thatsome marshes were either net importers of carbon, or showed no netexchange. Thus, the notion of `outwelling' has become but a singleelement in an evolving view of marsh function and the link betweenprimary and secondary production. The `revisionist' movement waslaunched in 1979 when stable isotopic ratios of macrophytes and animaltissues were found to be `mismatched'. Some eighteen years later, theview of marsh function is still undergoing additional modification, and we are slowly unraveling the complexities of biogeochemicalcycles, nutrient exchange, and the links between primary producers andthe marsh/estuary fauna. Yet, since Teal's seminal paper nearly fortyyears ago, we are not much closer to understanding how marshes work.If anything, we have learned that the story is far more complicatedthan originally thought. Despite more than four decades of intenseresearch, we do not yet know how salt marshes function asessential habitat, nor do we know the relative contributions tosecondary production, both in situ or in the open waters of theestuary. The theme of this Symposium was to review the status of salt marshresearch and revisit the existing paradigm(s) for salt marsh function.Challenge questions were designed to meet the controversy head on: Domarshes support the production of marine transient species? If so,how? Are any of these species marsh obligates? How much of theproduction takes place in situ versus in open waters of theestuary/coastal zone? Sessions were devoted to reviews of landmarkstudies, or current findings that advance our knowledge of salt marshfunction. A day was also devoted to ecological engineering and wetlandrestoration papers addressing state-of-the-art methodology andspecific case histories. Several challenge papers arguing for andagainst our ability to restore functional salt marshes led off eachsession. This volume is intended to serve as a synthesis of ourcurrent understanding of the ecological role of salt marshes, andwill, it is hoped, pave the way for a new generation of research. ... Product Description
This book is a compilation of most of the seminars presentedduring a symposium held in Arnhem, the Netherlands. The introductiontreats not only the Netherlands as wetland in a larger landscape butalso the various wetland types within the country itself. Thesubsequent case studies concern representative wetland types. Bothintroduction and case studies give an historical, hydrological, physicochemical and biotic characterization of the wetland concernedas well as a description of management measures in the past and in thepresent; summarize the threats to the systems; and indicate prospectsfor theecosystems, given the present environmental conditions andexpectations for short and long term changes. In the introductionspecial attention is paid to the border-crossing biotic elements, suchas birds. These sections are followed by a summary of the ecology ofthe Netherlands wetlands and indications for future ecologicalresearch. Finally, the environmental policy and its consequences formanagement on a national, regional and local scale are discussed.

Product Description
There is growing concern over the conservation and management of European wet grasslands. The maintenance of the European wet grassland landscape, including floodplain meadows and coastal grazing marshes or pastures, through traditional low-intensity farming has conserved a habit supporting internationally important plant and animal communities, including many rare species. However, land use changes such as flood defence, land drainage, agricultural intensification and neglect have caused a considerable reduction in the extent and biodiversity of European wet grasslands. The international importance of the habitat for biodiversity conservation has recently been recognised with its inclusion in the European Union Habitats and Species Directive and the Convention on Biological Diversity fostered by the United Nations. This volume thoroughly examines European perspectives of wet grassland ecology in order to encourage an integrated approach to contemporary issues. Important topics covered include the status of wet grasslands in Europe, their biodiversity (plants, invertebrates and birds), hydrology and management (especially for conservation objectives), and the restoration of this threatened habitat. It combines prescriptive, analytical and reviewing contributions, including case studies from across Europe. As such, this book will appeal equally to academic institutions and professional practitioners. ... Read more
