Exercises
The book gives exercises at the end of each chapter, but does not give the answers to check by.Some of the Exercise questions are so difficult to find answers to.

Excellent!!
I have taken many courses at both undergrad and grad levels and in doing so have come across books that left me wondering.This book in contrast is wonderful!It is excellent at covering the full spectrum of various operating system issues.I doubt I'd pick it up if I were intently interested in Macs, though.It does a good job of addressing UNIX/Solaris issues, JAVA, and of course Intel-based OS's.Was an easy read.

Good First O/S Book
A good introductory O/S book for undergrad/beginning graduate students. Well-designed and straightforward. Good examples of Java code.

The one drawback is a tendency to get rather wordy in some sections and ramble on a bit. Taken as a whole, however, this is a very worthwhile textbook.

easy to read and up-to-date
Jave, NT, Linux... This is the only OS text book I can find which has these buzz words. Like anything else in life, Being up-to-date could be good or bad.

So is easy-to-read. Any tiny lack of details could bemisleading, that's the impression I got while reading this book, I keepasking why, how, such kind of questions. It seems to be the generaldrawback of OS textbook, so ambicious that try to cover all the aspect, tooambicious to cover all the aspect.

Great book, but I never took the cert test.
XP is to old now to cert in, but a great book for those who still use it and want to learn about it.

Certification Ready
This book was very helpful in passing my Microsoft 70-271 exam. It provided much relevant material from a users standpoint that prepared me for my certification. It also is a good Book to keep around as a reference.

Useful if you have lots of real world experience
For those of us looking to fill in our varied real-life technical support experience with some actual honest-to-goodness certifications, this book is a useful cram. I was looking for more of the experience of the test, and I found the difficulty of the questions to be appropriately challenging. I'm pleased to find that they are actually geared towards a higher level exam, since that is my ultimate goal. I also skimmed the book a lot, and did not even try to read it chapter by chapter (I don't study for exams that way). I ended up absorbing a lot more information from this book than I thought I would have, and I must confess I'm extremely desensitized to spelling mistakes in computer software, and didn't notice them in this book. I certainly didn't come across anything that would have stopped me from picking up the sense of the information offered. I definitely picked up new things from this book that I didn't know before, and I appreciated that. Learning more about the innards of Windows XP is never a bad thing, and at least one piece of information I was able to immediately use at work.

Pretty Good
I passed the test so I guess that means the book worked. It was actually supplemental material. My first choice is always Sybex. This is a decent book, it went too much into the Remote Installation for what I had on the test but the test may be different for you.

Good, but problematic....
I just passed my 70-271 exam and I do believe this book was an important factor in my score. However this book is problematic.

1.) The MeasureUp practice exam questions are 50 of the same questions found in the Microsoft Press book for the same exam. But that book has 261 more questions than this one.
2.) The questions in the book are far more difficult than necessary and many are more appropriate for the MCSA/MCSE exam 70-270.
3.) There are too many typographic errors to name. The major ones have been mentioned by other reviewers.
4.) There is no information on service pack 2.

I intend on using my MCDST credentials as an elective exam for the MCSA, so I appreciate the difficulty of the questions but by attempting to attain an 85% to 90% on the practice exams in the back of this book I had thoroughly convinced myself that I would fail the test and was very close to rescheduling it. I did not, and I passed my test with more than 200 point over the minimum score.

To this books credit I have found the information very useful in my job. I have received several calls from users with processor affinity problems or with 16 bit program errors that I know how to solve immediately because of the high standards set by the questions in this book. I am, therefore, very satisfied with my purchase.

Edit to original review: Having achieved my MCDST credentials and completed my MCSE Security I believe that what I have written concerning this book is correct. Many of the questions in the book are much better suited for the MCSA/MCSE track. I found the extra knowledge useful, but the objective should be to help you prepare for the 70-271 NOT to stress you out with topics you will never see covered on the exam.

"Just the Computer Essentials" is an excellent choice for the computer "savy" or the "not so savy" PC user like me. I found it easy to follow, even through complicated topics.Just recently purchased a Notebook with

Great for beginners and beyond
I bought this book because I had just upgraded my computer to one with Windows Vista and wanted to learn the ins and outs quickly. It's been such a great tool in learning all of the new things I can now do!

Also, I teach introductory class online for first time college freshman, most of whom are older, non-traditional students, that covers study skills and basic computer skills (such as surfing the internet and attaching files to emails). Because they're just starting their college careers, many of them are looking at buying new computers and I've recommended that they all purchase this book to help them pick out and use their new computers.

Excellent desktop reference!
This is a great book for anyone who needs help understanding the ins and outs of computers.I'm not a computer expert and was worried that this would be just another book full of mumbo-jumbo.But, to the contrary, this is a well-written, easy-to-read, resource guide that will help you navigate your computer and the new Vista software.You won't be disappointed!

Excellent Book!!
I found out about this book after a friend referred me to it.I'm not the most technical, but was able to understand everything he discussed.He took the time to explain everything in a way that made complete sense.My computer is getting pretty old, and I'm just about ready to get a new one.I'm sure I'll have this book right at my side when I get it and to help me move everything to the new computer!

I would definitely say that this book is worth it if you're looking for a little help on your computer

This book makes Windows Vista easy!
I've been using Windows XP for years now and just got a new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium on it.There's definitely a big difference between those two versions of Windows!I've become very good at using XP, but wanted to make sure that I got Windows setup right and wasn't missing anything.I looked at a couple Vista books and I'm happy that this was the book I chose.It's very straight-forward and to the point and leaves out a lot of the over-technical garbage that most home users wouldn't even care about.The author does, however, hit on everything I needed to get my computer running right.He discusses the specifics of the security software to run (like comparing different vendors) and he talks about some of the options for configuring backups (including some of the newer online backup services... this was excellent!).

I will also say that I already needed one of the chapters when my computer wouldn't boot up.I had a similar problem a couple years ago on my XP computer and HP had me reload the whole computer.I'm glad I thought to check this book first because I came to find out that there are some MUCH easier options in Windows Vista and was able to get back up and running in about ten minutes!So, that in itself made this a great purchase in my opinion - I probably saved a couple days worth of time in that alone!

The First Concise Guide
Introducing Windows 95, by Microsoft

This 95-page booklet introduces you to this new operating system in a quick and easy manner to get you familiar with Windows 95. The `Welcome' chapter tells how to find HELP on procedures or a specific item. It explains the changes from Windows 3.1 (pp.ix-xi). Page xii explains what is new: the interface to switch between programs, Windows Explorer, Long filenames, Plug and Play hardware compatibility, etc. Your old files should be copied or backed-up. The existing network configuration is used in Windows 95. [One unmentionable change is the deletion of the backward links to a program in Win 3.1; this was a source of problems when a program crashed.]

Chapter 1 has "The Basics" to get started with Windows 95, or a program. Use the taskbar to switch between programs. The "Documents" folder allows quick access to documents used earlier. You can get Help on a topic, find a named file on your computer, or change system settings. Long file names must be enclosed in quotation marks (p.16). It is very important to shut down Windows before turning off your computer (p.17)!

Chapter 2 has "Beyond the Basics". You can see the drives and files by their icons in a window (p.21). Windows Explorer is the most useful viewer. You can move, copy, or delete files or folders (pp.24-25). You can select multiple items. You can copy, move, or delete information in documents. Printers can be set up and documents can be managed (p.33). Software can be installed (p.35), and new hardware too (p.36).

Chapter 3 introduces Networks, which allows connections between multiple computers and printers. This allows files and hardware to be shared. The use of a network involves hardware and software. You must identify your computer on the network. Then you can share folders and their documents, or your printer. You can use resources located on other computers. Dial-up Networking can connect to your office computer and its network.

Chapter 4 discusses the various options: sound and animation, games, screen savers, the appearance of Windows. Pages 62 and 63 tell how to maintain your system. The `Briefcase' function allows synchronizing multiple versions of a file. [This is a more limited version of the REPLACE command used in DOS, which was more powerful in its use.] Dial-Up Networking allows two computers to hook up.

The Appendices has a Glossary to explain terms and basic actions. Keyboard Shortcuts are defined on pages 75 to 77. [Type the ones you need on a sheet of paper for reference.] There are features for People with Disabilities on pages 78-79. `Troubleshooting' starts on page 82. You can restore the registry to the last version (p.84). The `Incex' is on pages 87 to 95, from `A' to `X'.
