Product Description
The grey wolf is one of the world's most polarizing and charismatic species. Respected, adored, or held in awe by many as an icon of wilderness, wolves have also sparked fear and hatred when they have come into conflict with human presence. Not surprisingly, they are one of the most intensively studied mammalian species in the wild. This book offers a fresh and provocative look at current trends in wolf and wildlife management. Representative case studies, from geographically and culturally diverse areas of the world, highlight the existing interconnections between wolves, their prey, their habitat, their ecosystems and people, and the role of science in policy formation and wolf management. In addition, the studies involve many issues, for example population genetics and livestock husbandry practices, that are entry points into larger aspects of ecology and evolution. This book will appeal to conservationists, scientists, wildlife managers, and anyone seeking a better understanding of wolves and their co-existence with us. ... Read more

Product Description

The Great Lakes region is unique in that it is the only portion of the lower 48 states where wolves were never extirpated. As the birthplace of some of the first modern concepts of wolf conservation and research, the region is also the first place in the U.S. where “endangered” wolf populations recovered.

During this process, much has been learned about wolf biology and ecology, endangered species management, carnivore conservation, landscape ecology, depredation management, and social aspects of wildlife conservation. Recovery of Gray Wolves in the Great Lakes Region of the United States traces wolf recovery in this region and highlights lessons learned by conservationists during the recovery process. Each chapter includes a thorough review of the pertinent literature, in addition to new data and new perspectives and interpretations. The result is both rigorous with respect to science and policy and accessible and interesting for the lay reader. The story of wolf recovery in the Great Lakes region is one of international significance for conservationists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wolves Howl Again In NW Wisconsin!
Several years ago, as I visited with my friend Adrian Wydeven in his Park Falls, Wisconsin, office at the Department of Natural Resources Headquarters, I commented to him that he needed to write a book on his "Wolf Project" that at that time was just starting to show exciting results. Two of the wolves in this study wore radio collars that I provided as I really wanted to be a part of this project as a "civilian". Adrian laughed at the suggestion and said "Maybe...". Well, here is his book! But, as Adrian would, he shared authorship with many specialists who helped bring this project to a tremendously successful conclusion. The specialists who participated in this book are the most knowledgeable experts in their area. Adrian assembled a heck of a team and what they have to say about the part they each played makes for exciting reading! Adrian includes many pages of names and email adddresses of his team members and this book is only the first steppingstone if you really want to find out about the Wisconsin gray wolf re-introduction program. They are beautiful animals to have back in the ecosystem. Tell Adrian I sent you! (Greg T., Hayward, Wisconsin) ... Read more
