3-0 out of 5 stars It's a good overview of what must be considered....
but it's not much help at finding the answers.Of course, that's kind of understandable, since "Woodworking" is such a broad area, and so different in different areas. The interviews with woodworkers currently in the business are interesting, but it's a real stretch to call them "Case Studies".I'm a graduate management student -- I know case studies -- these are NOT case studies.I only make that distinction because it's a shame that they really aren't case studies. This book is clearly written for the target audience of people who do woodworking as a hobby and want to turn it into a little business, maybe just something on the side. The book is VERY GOOD at bringing up all the issues that a woodworker-turning-small-business-owner needs to know about and what needs to be done. It's even pretty good at pointing one towards how to get those things done.Where it is weak is in helping one see the salient turning points in making the decisions:for example, it says the woodworker needs to choose between setting up business as a sole-proprietorship, partnership, S-corp, LLC, etc. -- that's important -- but it doesn't have enough on why any of those should be chosen over the others. Not enough to help a person decide. The "interviews"/case studies *would* have been a great place to ask questions like that - "why did you choose to set up an S-corp? How has it worked out for you?" -- and then back up those answers with responses from a business school graduate. This type of analysis would have made the book much more valuable.Still, I think it's worth reading to anyone considering hanging a shingle in front of their shop (so to speak).I give it a solid 3 stars, and closer to 4 than to 2.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good insight to what it takes to earn some money from wood
This book will give you some insight as to what ittakes to pursue woodworking either full or part-time.If you are a hobbyist and are considering pursuing this field full time, this book will make you becomeaware of issues that you may not have considered. In addition to exploringvarious business related issues, fifteen professional woodworkers areprofiled to give you an example of how they entered the field and how theymarket their craft.I found some of these profiles a bit redundant buttheir marketing techniques interesting.Personally, I am a hobbyist whenit comes to woodworking and have considered pursuing this full time.Thisbook, however, made me think of some issues that I need to consider before"jumping in."Overall, an informative book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
I mostly bought this book for the promise of great pictures. The pictures were great, but I lusted for even more than the book contained. If my review were based entirely on the pictures, it would be a bit short of 5 stars. That is my only criticism.

I have come to recognize as a new investigator into the Arts & Crafts Movement that Bruce Johnson plays a significant role in the revived interest of Arts & Crafts. What the book does provide is a wonderful history of the the Grove Park Inn and of Roycroft's founder, people and products, as well as lesser know contributions.

Before buying the book, I was unaware of the Inn and it's significance.I expected to skim the text and and consume the pictures, but I actually read and enjoyed every word.I recommend the book for all its content, and my wife and I are now considering a jaunt down to the Inn for a stay and to maybe take a few pictures of our own and to enjoy the access to the wonderful history so freely available to the public.

Unless you have already read widely on the same subjects that this book covers, I think that you will enjoy this one and come away with a genuine appreciation for the rich history of the people and contributions that make this a special place.

4-0 out of 5 stars great idea generator
Good book to help you find uses for that pile of wood cut-offs that are too good to just throw away.If you don't like his projects, then this will help you to generate projects of your own design.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got scrapwood??
I'm just like every other woodworker out there. I generate a lot of cutoff's from my box making, that are generally too small to make another box out of, but too nice to just throw in the wood stove. Doesn't take long and the "scrap" starts taking over the shop. When I first got this book, a year ago, I hoped it would help me use up some of that pile. It did. This book is has 18 ideas and designs, that Mr Pierce goes into great detail about. Design/layout, cutting/fitting, etc. I actually think there are more pictures and drawings than there is text. His tips on tool use and finishing are excellent. After making several of the projects in this book, I began to generate idea's of my own, so many in fact, I had to start writing them down. I think this was intentional on his part. The book gets ya goin and then your imagination kicks in. An excellent book, highly recommend to every "scrap maker" out there. ... Read more

Dozens of photographs, accompanied by explanatory captions, give readers a privileged glimpse into the artists’ studios as they demonstrate their special skills and produce a range of furniture. Examine Curtis Buchanan’s method of assembling a Windsor chair or Doug Sigler’s mold-making techniques for bent lamination. Explore Paul Sasso’s evocative, multilayered painted surfaces. See how Brent Skidmore produces distinctive carved textures, and how John Clark creates complex inlaid panels using inlaid veneer. 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Should a reader expect that information about constructing the furniture shown on the front cover be contained in the book?Well, if you, like me, would expect such a thing, then you will be disappointed.

This book really isn't all that much about woodworking.Sure, there are a lot of pictures of furniture made with wood. But that large majority of pictures have no discussion regarding construction. And a lot of the construction details are about surface decoration, like painting. Most woodworkers that I know have little desire to spend days creating the illusion of a star chart on their woodwork.

I enjoyed Tage's discussion of tapered plies in the construction of bent laminations. But this has been discussed in many places and didn't need to be repeated. The discussion on Windsor chairs is excellent but again, Windsor chair construction has been covered amply by many sources including Norm Abrahms on the New Yankee Workshop.

And the fact that construction of the desk shown on the cover is not covered in detail inside the book is misleading and really annoying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially for Studio furniture lovers & makers!
This book simply put is one of my favorites among the ton of furniture and woodworking books i own. I am an architect turned woodworker with an admiration for Studio furniture. This book not only showcases some of todays best crafstmen but also has a step by step process of how some of their signature features are achieved!
One example is Brent Skidmore's texturing techniques.
I pull for this book quite often not only for design inspiration but also for technique insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars imaginative, elegant work
This book is a gem!It provides a wide variety of work, both traditional and individual, all extremely well made and well designed. It also gives a peek into certain techniques, without being a "how-to."Great for anyone looking for creative inspiration, with a vast array of different forms, surfaces, techniques, and ideas. For traditionalists, there are a few nice images and a great section on Windsor chairs, as provided by Curtis Buchanan, in my opinion the finest Windsor chair maker in the country. The main focus of the book is on innovation rather than tradition, so traditionalists, like the previous reviewer, will be disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Far Out There...
I saw the description of this book and the cover here on Amazon and I thought this would be an interesting book that may stretch my imagination in my own woodworking, but based on my estimations after going through the book most of the folks profiled in the book have more than stretched...they have snapped!
I am just not into painted woodworks or wood art (like some kind of painted cabinet shaped like a vegetable).I think some folks try a little too hard to be original and, personally, I just don't get it.
About 20% of the book is worthy works in wood, but the other 80% is just wacky junk in my opinion.
Definitely find the book and page through it before purchase.I wish the preview option was available on this book in Amazon and I would have quickly determined this was not for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential "Business Tool" to own!
This was a Christmas gift to my son, our family handyman who loves to dabble in wordworking.Family and friends have encouraged him to quit his job as an Engineer and do this full-time.He has accumulated an impressive collection of carpentry tools and books on "How to build....." (You name it and he has a book on how to build it.)Of all his books, this is the only one that provided him with a thorough insight of the business aspect of woodworking. He said this book is the only one that gave him the proper "business tools" to decide whether or not to make a career change. He hasn't made a career change yet, but reading this book has helped him understand the industry a lot better and what he will have to do to turn his hobby into a viable business to support his family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woodshop guide
You would think that setting up a workshop is no big deal...WRONG.I have a few guides to shop setup. But get this complete guide and don't end up with everything stuffed in the garage.I liked the section on dust collection systems. Not just hanging a shop-vac next to a saw.The other area that was helpful was the section on power for your shop. Check out the look inside feature for more examples.I bought it used and found it very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Two
The value of a book with many authors generally lies in the editing. Good editing manages to get experts in different fields (and skills) and with different perspectives to contribute their best thoughts for many topics. That way all or most of the "bases" are covered better than most single authors can cover all of them. A single author can seamlessly cover the field, but usually not to the comprehensive depth of a well-edited anthology.

This is a well-edited volume, with the selection and breadth adequate for those needing this kind of "how to" book. Thus it merits our five stars.

Popular Woodworking scores a solid hit with this collection. Sure there are some omissions, but these are more than compensated for by the solid thinking in the contributions.

Put this with a single author book (there are different authors for different folks/perspectives) and you will have 98% of what you need for an introductory and intermediate course in your Woodshop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good books to own
this book has information about every aspect of woodwork/furniture making. it shows things from wood selection, fastener sizes to furniture dimensions

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellentreference
This is an excellent reference to have on hand in the shop. It's packed with dozens of very clear, short explanations of lumber grades, miter angles for polygons, standard furniture dimensions, wood screw shank and pilot hole drill sizes, glue guidelines, band saw pulley formulas, tool sharpening angles, nail gauges, top coat dry times, and on and on.

Just leafing through the book is an entertaining and educational experience. It is very clearly organized, and most of the information is presented in the form of very easy to understand charts and diagrams.

The book is spiral bound, so it will lie flat on the workbench, and it's printed on heavy, glossy paper that will resist dust and staining.

In my view, this book is worth every penny you'll spend on it.I'm very glad I bought it, and I'd do it again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful book
I found this to be the best wood workin book that I have come accross. The book would be a good choice for those who have not done a lot ofwoodworking but would like to get more serious, as well as for those of us who have been away from it for many years. In the world of a power tool for everything under the sun and instant quality Korn's book does a masterful job of explaining when and how to use the proper tool for the correct job. As a mid-level hobbyist, this book was perfect for my need, explaining how to use both power and hand tools, when to use them and why. The safety tips were excellent as well. I especially like the project progression as a method to teach and learn the basic techniques of working with wood. The book reignited a desire for high quality work with a personal touch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen and the art of joinery
This book is fantastic, particularly for the beginner or someone who wants a solid foundation in hand-cut joinery. It is certainly not encyclopedic, nor is it a "project book". It does, however, offer concise and insightful instructions on"the essentials". The "projects" on cutting mortise and tenon, and dovetails, contain a wealth of information about how to mark accurately and cut square and true with hand tools. By focusing on these details, skills develop and better joints happen naturally.

As a side note, the book contains lots of bits of good tool advice. The author often mentions, "If I had to have only one of tool X, it would be " which I think would be useful to anyone just getting started. Also, I notice that the tools used by the author in the illustrations are the type that get "best value" in tool reviews. Among tools used in the illustrations are what appear to be Marples blue chip chisels, Starrett squares, Shinwa protractor and bevel, xacto utility knife, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginner to experienced woodworkers
The author does a great job of walking through the basics of woodworking. If you read and follow the book I believe your woodworking skills will improve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basics for the woodworker reentering the avocation
In the world of a power tool for everything under the sun and instant "craftsmanship," Peter Korn's book does a masterful job of explaining when and how to use the proper tool for the correct job.As a mid-level hobbyist, this book was perfect for my need, explaining how to use both power and hand tools, when to use them and why.The safety tips were excellent as well.I especially like the project progression as a method to teach and learn the basic techniques of working with wood. The book reignited a desire for high quality work with a personal touch.

The book would be a good choice for those who have never done woodworking but would like to get started, as well as for those of us who have been away from it for many years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect 101 book for Beginners
I took a beginning woodworking course a long time ago, but have decided to refresh my interest.Korn's book is almost identical to the structure and pacing of instruction from my course. His project based instruction and step by step approach is exactly what newcomer's need. I also like Korn's lack of pretense when presenting tools or techniques. Many books these days wax the "poetic" of woodworking with seductive images and effusive text, being little more than a showcase of very expensive premium hand tools. Korn appears to take a more modest (and affordable) approach with essential hand tools. Although much of the machinery shown in the book may be beyond a beginner's pocket book, the alternative hand tool approach is well within reach and will drive home the fundamentals of woodworking more than machine milling will.

The first 70 pages introduce the reader to wood, joinery and (power and hand) tools. The reader learns a great deal without being intimidated by too much detail. The sections are a bit terse (particularly sharpening), but the simpler introductions are appropriate to the scope of the book. There are other books that specialize in the topics of advanced machine use, hand planes and sharpening. Korn's book has just enough to get you going without making you feel it is too complicated to proceed.

The first project, milling a board four square, is a fundamental task of woodworking that deserves the attention it gets in this book. Korn does a superb job of providing step-by-step instruction using hand tools or power tools. For me, Sharpening was the first "project" in the WW class I took since it is also a fundamental.

The second and third project is to take the boards you dimensioned and do some basic joinery (before working on any furniture). First, the basic mortise and tenon and then the through-dovetail joint. Joinery is also a fundamental, and these particular joints are the most widely used. Korn takes us step-by-step through the process with plenty of clear photographs showing the technique. The milled boards are long enough that the reader can practice the joints several times. Each time your joints will get better, and you will gain valuable experience and confidence.

The last 80 pages include two small projects, a handsome stool and a side table. These projects are big enough to introduce several more fundamentals without being too complex that the reader will never finish. The stool introduces half-blind dovetails, pinned tenons, glue-up procedure, and basic finishing. The side table introduces basic carcase and drawer/panel door construction. Again, all steps are well documented with plenty of photographs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Weekend Woodworking
Book came in a timely matter and in good condition. My employee was very happy with the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only old-fashioned projects
I was very disappointed when I first opened this book. The projects are so old-fashioned, I hardly found a couple of nice designs. If you want to equip your home with things that look 100 years old, you should buy this book - but I do not like this style. This might be popular in the US, but not here in Europe. It is mentioned in the description of the book that the designs are classic, but I expected something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Projects
This book has a LOT of projects because this is a thick book. I'm very impressed with the projects. Many of them are larger projects than what I need since I am a middle school woods teacher and I am looking for smaller projects than many of these are, but that is not the fault of the book so I did not lower the score because it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. This has a few furniture projects as well as toys and other items. I recommend this book for anyone looking to make a variety of projects of various sizes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book filled with "duh" plans and projects...
Some vaguely interesting projects. Nothing here to extend woodworking skills beyond cutting and nailing boards though... A couple of nice clock projects. Some toys projects that might make good gifts or projects to get the kids off the video game consoles and doing something...

You might just want to check this book out from your local library before deciding if you want to spend your hard earned cash on it...

3-0 out of 5 stars Projects for Beginners

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
I have three other books by Danny that I use all the time.Sorry to hear about his passing.I guess that explains why this book doesn't seem to be as thorough as I expected it to be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
Nice book and illustrations but pretty basic and will build a few of the jigs in the book but for most of the jigs there are better ones on wood magazine.com web site and other web sites. If you are new to woodworking then probably a good book but for others better to save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
If you're an old-hand at the shop, then this probably won't be too much for you... but for a guy like me, who has his shop in his basement, this book saved me a lot of time!

2-0 out of 5 stars Seen one, seen all
It's getting to the point that every new jigs and fixtures book is a rehash of some previous one or its content is made up of stuff you've already seen in the wood working magazines. This is the last jigs and fixtures book I will buy because I now have five and mostly they all cover the same thing. Some actually include pictures and plans which have appeared in earlier books. If you don't have a book on jigs and fixtures, this one is OK but there are better ones out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb set of jigs for the shop!
This is the best book of jigs I have ever used (including De Cristiforo).

They are practical and easy to buid. A must have for every shop! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful
Danny Proulx is the author of project books that I enjoy a great deal. This is one of my favorites. There are 15 projects in this book ranging from simple adjustable utility shelves to a kitchen pantry and an entertainment armoire.Mister Proulx keeps in mind the real world limitations that most of us face including the cost of materials and tool availability. He gives several options on how to build and finish, from simple slab doors to frame and panel construction. The author teaches and stresses basic points while the project plans allow freedom to amend to the intended use, preference, and skill of the wood worker. The projects will not result in museum quality heirlooms, but that is not the intent. The resulting projects are attractive, useful, sturdy, and I am proud to show them to my friends. The results are much nicer than the "build it in a weekend" style that sometimes show up in project books.
The projects detailed are as follows:
1) Pine chest of drawers
2) Storage Bed
3) Desk work center
4) wood edged counter tops
5) frameless base cabinets
6) utility wall cabinets
7) bookcase construction
8) Kitchen storage unit system
9) simple clothes wardrobe
10) low cost storage shelving
11) closet storage system
12) corner entertainment center
13) television armoire
14) large dresser
15) bedside cabinet and bookcase

Within the projects are great ideas such as building a panel cutting jig for your table saw, making solid wood panel glue ups, making a box joint jig, installing doors with hidden hinges, using dowels, making table saw frame and panel doors, and making birch plywood drawers. This book contains a great deal of useful information that is easy to utilize in a home workshop.

1-0 out of 5 stars Same as Smart Shelfing & Storage
I have the Smart Shelving and Storage Solutions book by Proulx and from looking at the Table of Contents of this "new" book on line at Amazon, I believe that many if not all of the projects in both books are identical or very similar. Most of the photos in the Table of Contents of Best of Danny Prolux Storage & Shelving are the same as the ones in Smart Shelving and Storage Solutions.I'm sorry that Mr. Proulx finds it necessary to reissue an old book under a slightly different title.I for one will buy a different book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book
the materials I order were received in very good conditional. I am happy with the service I received and the timeliness of the shippment. I would recommend this company to my friends for their future needs of educational materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for any woodworker
Book seems to be very well written and organized. There are a lot of pictures, which are clear and helpful even though the pictures are quite old.Regardless on the old pictures, the methods presented and explained in this book (actually three books) are everlasting. Actually every modern day woodworker should take a look on this book. It's enlightening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent woodworking resource
Excellent set of books, and the DVD is invaluable. You get to see a master at work while he gives reasons about his methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Frid
I first came in contact with this set while in college studying woodworking about 6 years ago. While in school I referenced it many times for a complete 'how to' to a 'how do I do that again.'Now, I am still in the woodworking business, and this is a great set of books to have around to consult for what ever reason, thus, I recently got my own.I especially like a chart he has for doing compound angled miters- I must have looked at that a hundred times.Though the pictures are obviously dated, the skills and basics techniques he writes about are timeless, and are a fantastic jumping off point for someone to figure out how to make anything. He teaches you everything you need to know, I highly recommend this set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tage Frid
These are great books full of good information. Not all of his furniture is
in a style that I would choose, but it's constrution is great. The DVD is good.
Although not packed full of woodworking skills, it's nice to watch this master work
in his shop. You'll wish you could spend a few days working with him. ... Read more
