Good book for beginner to intermediate
lots of good tips in well thought out manner. Simple to intermediate projects. I would recommend this book to anyone who is an experienced beginner to intermediate.

If you are going to buy only one woodworkingbook, this should be it!
I noticed this book at Lowes but did not want to pay their price so I found it on Amazon and bought it for about 1/3 of the shelf price.What a great book! It covers everything from choosing wood to making 40 fabulous projects!I showed it to my son, who is a better woodworker than I am.He agreed with me, this is a book for the beginner as well as the seasoned woodworker.I think he will be getting one in his Christmas stocking but it won't be my copy. As the book says, dream it, design it, build it.This is the only book you will need to take your product from the dream to completion.You won't regret this purchase.

Complete for the Beginner
Other reviewers have pointed out the flaws of this book and I will concur: not enough drawings, inaccurate parts lists, over simplified projects..ect...However, this is not a bad book if you are a beginner, and like another reviewer said have a good selection of power tools. For somebody who is not a novice you may find 3 or 4 projects that will challenge you. There are much better books, such as Christopher Schwarz's Workbenches, which will teach you techniques such as mortise and tenon, drawboring, hand planing, and the all important task of making a proper workbench. A more accomplished woodworker will begin to design his or her projects after learning the basics of joinery and wood selection. This book will be better suited to a beginning woodworker or a person who may be interested in starting the hobby..

An updated version
Excellent book by Mr. Tobin. Wish I had read the practical information he gives when I first became inspired. It would have made my woodworking journey less painful.

He said one thing in his earlier version of this text which has been updated and is more now current. I am paraphrasing.."If there is no place to put it don't build it."good advice for guys who save everything then have no shop space to work?

Helps to organize and simplify?

Properly titled
The book is about managing a cabinet making and installation job.It contains solid shop and job site tips from a salient and obviously experienced author.It does contain some construction guides but they are very basic and not the focus of the book.Jim did author another book regarding cabinet construction which I do have and highly recommend.

In closing, I used the advise of the text to fit a sample cabinet set up for a corner of my hobby shop.Tops and bottoms for about 8 feet of total counter length.Used story sticks and Jim's layout advise.The stick is a great method for translating positions from the wall to the ply sheets.The ceilings and floors of the shop are uneven there and it allowed me to test Jim's cabinet fitting advise during the install.Some of the generic forms in the book were also very helpful.everything is square plumb and tight and nice to the eye.

Those were my first cabinets made ( attempting a glue-up counter now also ).The wife likes them, so maybe I accomplished something.Need more pine and poplar to practice.I have no expectations that I will be competing with any of the home improvement stores or established cabinet shops.My brother and I on occasion will renovate and resell homes therefore remodeling a kitchen for cost is a priceless skill and will help our margins.Thanks Jim.

can you do what you like?
many people who love to work wood decide to do it for a living, and this book covers the basics.as far as this type of cabinetmaking book goes, it is pretty good. for most of us, the cabinets are not the issue.the problem is that suddenly we have to know taxes, paperwork, marketing, some law, personnel management, etc.

where all these books fall short is in the stuff we don't want to do: set up a business plan in depth.why are you different from the guy down the street who is making boxes too?why are you better, where is your weakness?any book can tell you how to make a face frame cabinet or euro cabinet, but what about the other aspects you will have to know?

Good guide for a Bandsawn-box beginner - PLUS 90 min DVD
I've not made a bandsawn box before although I have made "fine" boxes. The designs in this book are somewhat rustic but the boxes are visually interesting, relatively easy to master if you have confidence in your bandsaw skills (I still have 10 fingers and so does Jeff Volmer)and are FUN long after you apply the finish! The DVD is invaluable and I read the book, watched the DVD and then went back to reread the book with a clearer understanding of the steps (which are illustrated in the book with stills from the DVD).

Safely using your bandsaw for these boxes is a bit of a challenge. I used clamps etc to grasp some of the smaller puzzle box pieces but sometimes, in order to be able to freely make the various "flowing" saw cuts, the saw guard is raised and a fair bit of blade is exposed close to your hands. However, with planning and concentration, these boxes can be safely executed by an adult woodworker.

An excellent band saw teacher
Amazing work & experience passed for future generations.

A must book for band saw novices.

Puzzle Boxes
A very good book, the dvd is also very illustrative, I recommend this book to all lovers of woodworking

One of the best all inclusive books on the genre'. A 4.5 stars
I have been making band saw boxes for years. Some of them have bordered on "puzzle" boxes but I always wanted something a little more in depth and thorough as far as instruction. When I saw that this book was being released I immediately reserved a copy and eagerly anticipated its arrival.

I have yet to try all the designs in the book, more out of an equipment limitation than any lack of completeness on behalf of this book. The basic design is solid and once the basics are comprehended, further experimentation can follow.

The only thing keeping this book from scoring a solid 5 stars is the fact that not every woodworker has the availability to use a paddle sander and a large vat of finish. There are other ways around these though so they aren't a major drawback.

I recommend this book highly to anyone who has always wondered "How the heck do they do that?" The answers are in this book and its accompanying DVD. ... Read more

If you have a lot of time and metal working experience . . .
Most of the jigs represented in this book are tedious and time consuming to build and require a lot custom made or hard to find metal parts.Additionally, the plans are not clearly and consistently presented.Only the table saw sled is easy enough to produce in your shop with materials at hand.The book is poorly organized - i.e., there is a section on safe jigs with protective covers that should be supplementary to the appropriate jig - not a confusing separate section that doesn't give specifics like dimensions.

I can't recommend this book to beginners because it's to difficult to obtain materials and it's not clearly written.I also can't recommend this book to pros because they would find it and unorganized and serious waste of valuable shop time as all the projects could be done as well - with easier to obtain parts and better written schematics.

Not top pick
Although interesting, my advice is to get Sandor's book instead. I have both, and I use Sandor's more often...not just for his jigs, but for ideas on designing my own.

No plans, no dimensional drawings
Nice photos and descriptions.The book is lacking any detailed information on building any of the devices in the book.There are no material lists or detailed drawings.

Jigs without the Plans
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. It does have a lot of information and pictures and does describe how to use the jigs. However, there are very few actual detail drawings of the jigs. There is usually a general drawing, but that is about it. I suppose if you are an experienced wood worker, then that may be all you need. But for the beginner, there is not enough detail information to build many of the jigs or accessories. If you are looking for router jigs and tools, I highly recommend "Router Magic" by Bill Hylton. Router Magic is an excellent book with lots of detail drawings and bill of materials.

Finally!
We woodworkers all build jigs, you know those shop built attachments that hopefully allow a tool to function better than it did out of the box!If you're like me you use them and store them in the rafters.For surely theywill come in handy again!?Unfortunately most of them never get used againand end up collecting dust until you finally throw them out.For thisreason I have never been a big fan of jig books which to my mind just helpadd to the clutter.

However, in this new book from The Taunton Press weare finally treated to a selection of jigs and accessories that willundoubtedly be useful over and over again.The authors of the jigspresented are all experienced woodworkers who clearly gave some thought tothe longevity and usefulness of these accessories.

The first chapterdiscusses materials used to build jigs including various plastics.Chap 2shows benches and bench fixtures.The rest of the chapters are dividedaccording to the type of tool the jigs or accessories are designed to workwith, routers, tablesaws, etc.There is also an overview of somecommercially available router tables.

Some of the jigs are a bit complex,but even if you don't build exactly what is shown, the ideas for expandingthe usefulness of a particular tool are really innovative and should getyour own creative juices flowing!It would be a rare woodworker whowouldn't find at least several useful ideas in this book.

It would benice if tool designers gave more thought to how we woodworkers use theirtools and incorporated more versatility directly into their tools, butuntil then, this book offers an overview of well designed jigs andaccessories to fill the gap. ... Read more

Old Is New
Wonderful book on early American woodworking projects. Many useful items are detailed in this book.

A good book to own, but not a standalone great.
Let me start by saying, I was a little discouraged when i thumbed through and saw the designs. I was hoping for something more in line with reproduction rather than very clearly "inspired by". I would suggest for anyone looking for a wider compendium of (in my opinion) more elegant designs "American Country Furniture: Projects from the Workshop of David T. Smith".

That said, these two books combined together are great. Smith offers wonderful tips on hand techniques as well as great designs while Hambucken spends a lot of time discussing wood types, finishes, and more importantly, a detailed picture presentation on jigs and how to cut a wide variety of frame and panel doors, breadboard panels, and dovetails solely on the table saw.

All in all, I'm glad to have purchased this one, even if it wasn't for the designs. I'd say anyone looking to familiarize themselves with the many uses of their table saw beyond squaring and cutting rough lumber should definitely take a look.

Excellent Work on the Topic
I received this as a gift from my wife.She was kind enough to put tabs on the projects she wanted.This is not only a great woodworking book, it also gives you a feel for the era this furniture was constructed.We love country furniture and this book has become one of my favorites.

Super cool step by step illustrations
I bought this as a gift for someone, but they already had it. that goes to show it's a wanted item.I gave it to another friend instead of returning it and they love it.The illustrations are awesome. it's great for beginners and advanced.i love how it shows you the final product and also the step-by-step, color, illustrated directions. it gives info on hardware, stains, wood types, etc... i highly recommend this book. you just need some tools.

This book belongs in every craftsman's collection!
This book reflects the best qualities of the furniture it beautifully documents. It is elegant in its simplicity and thoroughly meets the needs of functionality. The photography is well done and shows clearly the nuances of the various pieces in authentic environments. The accompanying descriptions are brief and to the point. These points alone would make this a valuable book to own but the best part comes with the detailing of the components that make up this furniture. This covers everything from metal hardware and how it is made and used, through tools, paints and finishes, wood types and components and more.
The part of this book that most impresses me is the illustrative method for the various projects. Speaking as a retired technical illustrator I can only say "Well done!". The projects are clear and show the proper sequencing of steps without restraining the design. This means that a project can be fitted to the materials available and the needs of the user, much as the original furniture was made. Along with this are well executed illustrations for jigs and setups for modern power tools. The details for mortise, tenons, and traditional effects using modern tools are outstanding. Another Compendium from Fine Woodworking
If you have not read any of the Fine Woodworking books, then you need to know that they are not "books" per se. They do not have any continuity between "chapters". They do not present a complete presentation of the topic. They are a grouping (sometimes very loosely tied to the subject) of articles that have appeared in Fine Woodworking Magazine.

Rarely do I find any of their books to be filled with ideas I can use, but also rarely do I fail to find at least one that hits my hot button. I buy these because they are cheaper than the magazine for the material you get. By some unknown set of criteria, the articles that make it into their books are "best of".

"Practical Design" is not for beginners and is not as practical as most of their books. I did particularly like the "Design A Chair That Fits Like A Glove". I had lost my copy of the article that I had saved from when it first appeared. I have severe back problems and I think this will be one of my winter projects.

Helpful book
This book is helpful if you keep in mind what its purpose is. It is not to provide design ideas. It is to provide design guides. Things like selecting grain, joinery, finishes, proportions, etc. are covered, and done so well. For the cost this is a great value and helpful guide. Well written and laid out, and the photos and drawings are excellent.

A collection of articles
Sometimes you buy a book and it is exactly what it appears to be. That's the case with this book. This book contains a collection of articles from the magazine "Fine Woodworking". Good articles about various subjects related to furniture making. It is not a beginners book, but for the somewhat experienced woodworker it's good reading/reference material.

Finding the Golden Path
Taunton Press has two collections of articles on woodworking design in publication.As the title indicated, this collection focuses in the practical issues of furniture design, primarily to do with construction decisions.Speaking as someone who has occasionally 'created' himself into a corner, this is important material.After all, it never hurts to have a good grasp of what it really is going to take to make an interesting idea into a good piece of furniture.

Well illustrated and lucidly presented the six sections are Conceiving Your Projects, Organizing Your Projects, Engineering Furniture to Last, Construction Options for Tables, Construction Options for Cabinets, and Construction Options for Chairs.Each section contains articles of considerable interest.The detailing on table construction and the two articles on chair making are particularly interesting.Both focus on the 'holistic' factors of the project rather than simply covering joinery.

By fitting into the niche that sees design and construction as a process, the reader will come to see how each decision effects the final outcome.This means that what you see in your imagination is more likely to appear in front of you as finished work.While this is not a volume for beginners, taking the time to go through this book and understand the principalswill keep you out of trouble and increase your satisfaction with the final product.

Terrific for the beginning woodworker
I've contemplated making the transition from simple DIY to woodworking for a long while but it took this book to finally give me the confidence.The author has a talent for making the steps for each project seem so straightforward you can't wait to start.He writes in a very conversational manner with some dry humor - so dry I didn't even catch it the first time through.

The tools you'll need to begin the projects include: circular saw, jig saw, random orbital sander, drill/driver, handplane, combination square, speed square, and a tape measure.Later projects will require a router, biscuit joiner, and table saw.If you are just getting started, it may seem like a lot but you can come up with some ideas to modify the plans to suit the tools you do have.Assuming you have the interest to pick up this book, once you begin making sawdust your tool chest will find a way of growing.

Thanks to the author for writing such a fantastic book.

detailed but limited number of projects
This book offers great plans and really good illustrations. The projects are detailed and easy to realize by following the steps presented in the book. Unfortunately that amount of detail for each project leaves room for only a hand full of ideas within the pages of the book. Other books like "Setting up Shop" give you more ideas but no plans. I guess owning both or a few more lets you make your own adjustments and tailor your shop to your needs, which is what you really want to do - trust me. This book is a great place to start if you are not skilled enough yet to work without plans.

One of the best books of its kind.
I am a beginner and I love this book. The plans are well laid out and include many tips for beginners to build their skills. Projects for your shop includes great plans for a very nice workbench, router table, table saw workstation, work horses and some different storage units from lumber to clamps and more. I have purchased a few other books like this and this has been the most useful. I would highly recommend this book!!!!!

My father in law putters in his shop, and does lots of wood working for people at church.He keeps this book right on his work table, he uses it so much.Lots of nice patterns and easy to use.

The name and description of this book is deceiving.
This book would be better titled "Craft Projects
Using Wood."This is not woodworking.The vast
majority of the "projects" in the book are cutting
animal shapes and other forms out of wood then
painting it.Very "crafts" stuff.Not "woodworking"
projects like building furniture, joinery, etc.
I returned the book right away.

arrr...Another Time life book
I bought too many of these, because clearly I like them.Good for beginners and stuff.

What you wish every woodworking book was like
This book is a compilation of articles and plans from previous issues of Woodsmith. If you go to their web site, you can download the individual plans, but you're much better off buying this book. The book gives you twelve plans, including the workbench and cabinet, router table, table saw and miter saw stations, and a pretty good lumber rack, among others. The plans are well laid out, you get materials lists and cutting diagrams, and they include enough text to guide you through an entire project, start to finish. What I particularly liked were two things: 1) They warned you in advance of what NOT to do and what to watch out for, and 2) they gave you additional plans for jigs to make the job faster, easier, and better. Each project shows multiple exploded views, with plenty of closeups of the tricky parts. Additionally, they ocassionally offer alternative ways to build things, usually faster, cheaper, and/or easier if your skills aren't quite up to snuff. A real bonus are the Shop Tips. These appear about every three or four pages and convey some little tidbit of information that usually applies directly to the project you're working on.

I built the workbench and cabinet from the plans, and everything went smoothly (well, as smoothly as you could reasonably expect). I'm not a cabinet maker (yet), but this bench was the first step to move me in that direction. I learned a lot about joinery and ended up building the most valuable tool in my workshop. Unfortunately, to build a truly excellent bench requires a pretty good bench to begin with. (As with most jigs, you wish you could use the jig you're building to help you build it.) It's such a beautiful bench that it's almost a shame to do work on it. This is a work of art that could easily live in the living room. I'll be laying down a piece of melamine on it before I do anything involving glue or stain or anything else that could potentially hurt it.

The pages are high-quality and won't tear out easily. The book binding is loose leaf, held together by 32 rings. This means the book lays flat and stays open at whatever page you were reading. Of course, it also means you have to take care not to crimp the inside edge, as with any loose leaf binding. Like with a three-ring notebook full of paper, you need to help the pages a little. Small potatoes, though.

The cover is adequate, glossy over heavy card stock, and it seems to hold up okay. I've not abused my copy much, but I believe it will take a fair amount of punishment so long as you keep it dry.

In summary, if you're looking to learn about fine furniture crafting, this is where to start. If it doesn't help you, I'LL give you your money back. The only complaint I could find was that the authors have access to many more tools than the Average Joe, and so you may need to beg, borrow, buy, or rent additional items to complete your project. Use good materials, take your time, do it right, and you'll be rewarded immensely.

The book gives good general idea options for various workshops in the home/garage.It does give a nice option for a closet workshop, although it didn't look real practical to me.The book is lacking in specifics forbulding a bench or home repair area.This book is designed more for aperson who wants a "workshop" and has a number of power tools toplace in the room, such as scroll-saw, drill press, planer, etc.

Nice, but not the best!
This book is a well written book with nice pictures and so. You could buy it, but I would rather buy Leonard Lee's book. After reading Mr Lee's book, you won't need this one.
