Great book for starters
Great book to get me started turning pens. A lot of good info and pictures. Covers all the basics well.

For Starting Out
I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend.I've advanced to the stage where I'm getting pretty good at making dowels on an expensive lathe, and was feeling like I needed to find something that made me feel more productive.If I've got it figured right, my first pen will cost me about $4,000.After that, hopefully, economy of scale should set in (I hope).If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm pretty good in a wood shop, but an absolute newbie at turning.

I think my friend was being kind.Dick Sing assumes you have some familiarity with small gouges, skews and scrapers, which I do, and does little or no explanation of the turning part of pen making.He focuses on the intricacies of the equipment that is peculiar to pen making (mandrels, drilling jigs, etc.).Truth is, basic pen making is not a challenging occupation, and Dick Sing offers lots of pictures and straightforward text.This could have been called Pen Making for Dummies.In other words, anyone who can make a dowel on a lathe should be able to follow this book.Even me.

What is missing, though, is and real focus on creative pen making.But this I mean grooves, beads, and chatter work sort of things that can turn a pen into something other than a useful dowel.He does play around a bit with materials and an interesting desk pen, but for the most part this book is about kit making and not about custom pen making.Even so, it is a terse, but very useful, introduction.

Great how to on making pens
64 pages, full color, 9 gallery pages.Step by step pictures with detailed text on how to make pens/pencils on the lathe.This book was a must for making my first pen, and a great reference as I have progressed. Pens include: Standard twist (and pencil), Dome-top, Rollerball andFountain, Cigar pen, Flat-top click pen, Flat-top twist pen, and desk pen.

An outstanding presentation of "How-to" for pen making.
A very clear and concise presentation of what is required for makingexcellent writing instuments. Great color photos of all materials andinstructions of each step in the selection of woods, and hardware, how todrill, match and assemble the components. The number of ways to varie theappearance of the instruments. He does not go into the discusion of lathes.He concentrates making pens and pencils and the variations that can becreated. This is not about your father's bowls. How the &*%X# did they do that!
This is art in it's most creative form.This what happens when the best lathers (from around the world) get a hold of the most beautiful woods.This is cutting edge art with no rules.I don't think the book was written for you to ape the examples.The reader will formulate a design of their own, or just drool, thinking that their brain is a pea.This book introduces we dullards to the gods of wood.

masters of woodturning
I enjoyed this book, it has excellent photos. However, it should be titled THE NEW MASTERS OF WOODCARVING. Turning has very little to do with the pieces in the book. The focus is more on carving,painting and decorating. Do not buy this book if you are looking for items that may be produced from a lathe only.

This is a fabulous book.The photography is excellent, and it gives you ideas if you are an advanced artist just what can be done. I do gourd carving, so am looking at this book for ideas on carving gourds.Highly recommend for pictures alone.

The Practicalities of Imagination
I've discovered that woodturning books for beginners distinguish themselves from other topics by the immense number of step-by-step pictures within their covers. This book does the same thing but with a difference. It presumes you can do some basic turning. Consequently, it doesn't have the same number of pictures per project focused on documenting every small step. It demonstrates larger intervals. Where this book sets itself apart from the other dozen I own is that it shows, in detail, how to put together different woods to create the most amazing designs in the projects you turn. The photos are much smaller than some of the other books and these authors have crammed a huge pile into 96 pages. If the photos had been the size used in many other titles, this publication would have doubled in size. From my perspective, "Fabulous Turned-Wood Projects" bridges the gap for beginners allowing them to see behind the curtain and discover the "magic" steps that result in stunning outcomes by clearly demonstrating how to assemble the pieces of wood in ways you might not think of for another three years! We plan on working through all of the projects!

Great idea book
This book was a purchase I dont regret, but it could be better. While it has wonderful ideas and great pictures, the project instructions it gives could be more detailed with pictures that illustrate every step. There are a few projects in there, that are mostly detailed with text, and if you cant picture what they are saying, then the project becomes very difficult to accomplish. Turning Custom Duck and Game Calls
This is a good book for the beginner. I am getting into making custom duck calls, but I really didn't get anything that I couldn't get off the internet from the book (that I actually use). I would still suggest getting the book if you are looking to get into turning.

I gave this book as a gift and the recipient was very happy with it - he's a judge for such items!

Really an art form but a great call guide..
As a pen turner and upland game hunter, I naturally thought that turning and making game calls was a easily transferred skill. Wrong. The turning part of making calls seems straight forward but as I read further, there apparently are critical relationships between the call "guts" and the turning. I think!

I do appreciate the talent needed to build a good game call especially the experience of a good ear. If you know what a call should sound like then you can probably come up with a usable call.

But I love the shapes of custom calls and will make a few more as display or gift items for some friends, or maybe buy a good call and turn a fancy mouthpiece.

If you are lucky enough to have lathe turning skills as well as experience calling game, buy this book and create your own art. Recommended AAA+

Not a $20 book.
For $10 I could rate this as a good book. It just doesn't have $20 of usefull info. Its coverage of lathes to buy is very limited for a beginner. The section on making chucks, while usefull, is not anything you can't find on the web. The technique section is the big weak point. The author obviously has a great deal of skill, but does a terrible job of getting it across. This is especially true in his description of how to use the skew chisel. This is an OK first book, but should not be your only book on howto use a wood lathe.

Good, but technical lathe overview
Conover starts with descriptions of typical woodworking lathe construction, features, and advantages of different styles of lathes. There is a lot of discussion of lathe features and accessories. This is a goodoverview for someone to read BEFORE buying a lathe. There's also a goodsection on maintenance and repair. I found this very useful since Irecently acquired a used lathe without a user manual. Your user manualprobably doesn't discuss much overhaul, so it might be quite handy aswell.

He discusses various tools (gouges, chisels, etc.), how to grind /regrind / sharpen them, and how they're actually used. He describes a lotof basic techniques and types of cuts. I had some trouble following thissection because I'm a complete lathe beginner. It took some rereading andexperimentation. I think this is because Conover is primarily an expertturner and not so much a how-to writer. However, I think this is betterbecause his craftmanship comes through, and he's actually DONE what hedescribes -- the techniques are accurate have have been tested.

Iespecially like his directions for building your own chucks, tools, andother accessories. It's too easy to slip into accessory envy (the NewYankee Workshop syndrome), where you feel like you have to buy a smallfortune worth of chucks, tools, and accessories. Conover describes a lot oftricks that certainly cost less and probably work better than if you loadedup on toys at the woodworking store. His style here is great because itencourages you to come up with your own creative solutions.

Finally,there is a short section with step-by-step instructions for three exampleprojects: a finial, a drawer pull, and a Windsor stool. It might be good toadd another book on just projects. ... Read more

Much better books out there
I bought this book together with several others. The kits shown are outdated, and the projects are neither unique or unusual. A better bet is "The Pen Turners Workbook" which gives you more interesting projects and a better written book.

A uniqueguide for pens from wood lathes
I was most impressed by the different ideas for materials and layouts incorperated into the designs of Dick Sing's pens. He inspired a fresh look into my own designs with some rethinking of some materials to use for more projects.

He explains things that make your pens unique and different.It's nice to have pens everyone wants in your pocket!

Just Ok
The book does contain a lot of pens that are unusual; however, I wanted more information about turning small coves or other decorations.I also wanted some unusual design ideas - not just using different wood or putting in blocks of different wood, but designing the pen itself.Making it easier to hold or write with or changing the balance or length etc for the purpose of improving the product, not just the look.

Anyway, the book does have a lot of pens displayed and gives the pen turner a lot of ideas about changing the look by changing the wood and how the wood is cut and glued together.The key is using different materials for the pen itself.
