Product Description

Drawing data from official sources in 60 countries, as well as from the United Nations and the World Bank, this compendium of statistical information on population, fertility, and mortality treats every one of the UN-recognized countries in at least summary form. With data from 1950 onward and projections through 2020, this volume extends the dataset of Nathan Keyfitz and Wilhelm Flieger's landmark work, World Population: An Analysis of Vital Data (1968), with virtually no overlap.

All the life tables, standardized rates, and projections have been generated by uniform methods to ensure easy comparison among countries. More than 800 charts provide a foundation for analyzing the radical demographic changes now taking place: the historic lows of fertility in Germany and other industrial countries, Africa's persistently high fertility, and the worldwide extension of life expectancy. The product of cautious and painstaking labor, this work promises to be an important resource for further demographic research as well as a valuable comparative resource for studies of the status of global social welfare and the environment.

Product Description
This volume, the first in a new series on population and sustainable development, provides new ways of thinking about population trends in the 21st century. While the 20th century was the century of population growth with the world's population increasing from 1.6 to 6.1 billion, this book shows that the 21st century is likely to see the end of world population growth and become the century of population ageing. At the moment we are at the crossroads of these two different demographic regimes, with some countries still experiencing high population growth while others are already faced with rapid ageing. This book presents a new framework for discovering the underlying unity in this demographic diversity. ... Read more

Product Description

The purpose of this study is to better understand the essential interdependencies between the world economy and the global ecosystem, including human populations. World production, product prices, wages, interest rates, exchange rates, employment, and spending are shown to be mutually determined over time with the growth rates of country-specific renewable resources, the generation of waste, human population growth, waste assimilation by the basic fungible resource, and the sanitation and other health and human services provided by the government sectors. Particular attention is paid to alternative central bank policies and their potential effects upon future mixes of resources in world production and upon the level and composition of that production. Materials balance holds with respect to all production and consumption. Cash flow constraints hold with respect to all economic transactions; in particular, the decisions to save and invest are directly linked to financial market decisions.

Description:
To secure a quality life for current and future generations, sufficient land, water, and energy must be available. Worldwide today there is evidence that food production and distribution processes are problematic; more than 3.7 billion humans are now malnourished. With the imbalance growing between population numbers and vital life sustaining resources, humans must actively conserve cropland, freshwater, energy, and biological resources. There is a need to develop renewable energy resources. Humans everywhere must understand that rapid population growth damages the earth's resources and diminishes human well being. ... Read more

Description:
This paper uses recent UN data to examine population growth in the world's 485 largest cities between 1950 and 2010. Three themes guide the analysis. First, the changing population size distribution of these large cities is studied. Second, the changing global urban center of gravity is calculated and mapped. As expected, this urban centroid drifted steadily to the south and east after 1950. Third, the cities are grouped into 10 clusters, ranked from fastest growing to slowest growing, based on the similarity of their 5-year population growth rates during the 60-year study period. Some generalizations regarding size and location are given for the cities in these clusters and future trends for the world's largest cities are briefly discussed. . ... Read more
