5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I read this book and was satisfied with it. The writers were upfront with where their loyalties lie. They are Christians, and there's not even the slightest hint that they would lean in any other direction. However they presented the information truthfully about the other religions which allow the reader to be open-minded. The iformation concerning other religions was current and correct when compared to sources on the internet and other reference books.
It was a welcomed Addition to my ministerial Library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biased and proud of it!
I have read various so-called non-biased texts on world religions over the years. It is refreshing to read a book that admits up front that it has a bias. This book is probably best used by practicing Christians who would like to compare and contrast their faith with others, thereby clarifying their own beliefs and giving them a tool for witnessing.I first read this many years ago, but I plan to order more now to lead a Bible Study. The humor makes it more fun to read, but I promise we will discuss whether it is offensive, and how to share our faith without coming across as condescending.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for group Bible study
This is a great book!It is very thorough in explaining differences in religions/cults.It has a little humor which balances out the serious subject.I would recommend it to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars World Religion and Cults
These two authors are outstanding in presenting information to an individual just starting to study the world's religions and their basic doctrines. It is easy reading and despite the title has a bit of humor interspersed - far from boring!! It will lead a reader to more of their published books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Good for Serious Study
Although I appreciate the candor in the Authors Note that they are Christians and they were not going to try to hide that, they also put that we do not want to read another one-sided, intolerant, discriminatory tirade against other faiths. With that said, they bagin each chapter with a Bible Scripture in the attempt to discredit the faith you are about to read. I have to agree with another reviewer who said they tried to be funny but it really just came off as judgemental and insulting.

I had to laugh out loud in the section on Hinduism. The questions for review in the back I found to be the most insulting because they were a clear ploy to push their own agenda. Page 168, question number 6. It said, Is reincarnation defensible from a rational standpoint? My answer to that was,"Is Mary giving birth to Jesus as a Virgin rational?"

My guess is that these particular Christians have never read, The Gnostic Gospels, Nag Hammadi, The Gospel of Mary Magdeline, The Unknown Life of Jesus (Issa,) or the lost book of John which is the same guy in the Bible, only the story is a lot different with that missing link. He states the name of the God of the Bible and guess what...It is not the Supreme God. You cannot accept a mans testimony in one book because it made it into the Bible and then ignore the full gospel of his writings when it is found later in a desert with other gospels from that time period. I would gather they also never read Holy Blood Holy Grail. I recommend anyone who is intersted in researching religion to do so with an open mind and study them all before making your conclusion.

This book is very biased and although it has some good information, it is hard to find it through all the sarcasm and insults. I have to agree with the other reviewer when he said the cover says it all. The Narrow Road Leads to Christianity? Whatever! You've got to hand it to the Publishers though. They new this book would cause some outrage and that is what sends the books flying off the shelves. As an Author myself, who has studied and continues to study world religions, this biased and sometimes ignorant book has given me another chapter to write on. Thank you for that. ... Read more

Product Description

Most people know Greg Graffin as the lead singer of the punk band Bad Religion, but few know that he also received a PhD from Cornell University and teaches evolution at the University of California at Los Angeles. In Anarchy Evolution, Graffin argues that art and science have a deep connection. As an adolescent growing up when "drugs, sex, and trouble could be had on any given night," Graffin discovered that the study of evolution provided a framework through which he could make sense of the world.

In this provocative and personal book, he describes his own coming of age as an artist and the formation of his naturalist worldview on questions involving God, science, and human existence. While the battle between religion and science is often displayed in the starkest of terms, Anarchy Evolution provides fresh and nuanced insights into the long-standing debate about atheism and the human condition. It is a book for anyone who has ever wondered if God really exists.

5-0 out of 5 stars I believe in re-evolution
first of all, is very hard for me to do a review for this book, because still i'm reading it LOL, and second 'cause i'm latin american, and it's my first book that i'm reading on english.
i've read "Manifiesto Punk" of Greg and he said everithing the same that i think about punk, (culture, moda, thinking, etc).
Now, with "Anarchy Evolution" i've found the same. I think that Greg, besides punk singer and scientist, is a big social philosopher.
Absolutely recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Inspirational, Captivating
First off let me say, I have been a Greg Graffin/Bad Religion fan since I was in Kindergarten. Brought up and have lived in the punk scene for as long as I can remember. The problem with the punk seen in general is that the lifestyle is full a self destructive nature that is very hard to escape from. Inspired by the depth of the lyrics if Bad Religion, I began studying the band only to find out that they were not your typical punk band, Dr. Griffin was an educated man that could balance the life of a punk rocker as well as the life of a professional. This made me realize, what is the ultimate defiance of a punk rocker? It is success. I achieved my Masters Degree and continue loving the roots of my inspiration.

I loved the book because it gave me great insight into the man that has inspired me throughout my life. Seeing the struggles that he went though, the items that inspired him, seeing the human aspect of a person that I would consider one of my greatest influences in life. The greatest gift humanity has is the ability to question everything and find truth through observation, experience, and the anarchy life presents us with. This book is this journey, definitely worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The naturalistic worldview of a punk rock professor
Great, easy to read book is an evolutionary primer as well as a memoir of a punk rock legend. For fans of Bad Religion (obviously) and those interested in evolution and atheism.

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Greg for ChuckPalahniuk.net. We spoke about everything from music to the new book to evolution to the existence of god. He gives a great interview.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Having been a Bad Religion fan for about 16 years, Greg Graffin draws great parallels to his career as a scientist and a musician. He shows that it doesn't have to be all spikes, combat boots and leather to help change and influence the world we live in a positive manner. Thinking for yourself and asking tough questions. Truly anti-authoritarian.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evolution for Punk Philosophers
What made this book such an interesting read is that Greg Graffin was able to intertwine a lesson on evolution with the story of his life. The main appeal to punk rock to me has been the angry response to authority. I have also enjoyed the spontaneous order and surprising politeness (with the exception of one concert) that would emerge from mosh pits at Bad Religion concerts. Punk rock spoke to the side of me that rabidly pursues truth. Greg also seems to have this same view about science and punk rock, which was exactly what I was hoping for from this book. Although he does not go into his personal politics in any part of the book, he does explain the beauty behind the anarchy of evolution. The natural order in evolution that arises out of seeming chaos, free of rules and only regulated by reality speaks deeply to a philosopher like me. ... Read more

Product Description
Ideal for a one-semester course, this new text--based on the two-volume introduction published in 2001 and edited by Willard G. Oxtoby--covers the major world religions, addressing their significance in today's society and culture and also in historical perspective. Each chapter is written by an esteemed scholar and covers a different tradition, focusing on six areas: the origins of the movement; the crystallization of its teachings; its major divisions in regional and historical perspective; the practices of the tradition's adherents and religious specialists; its influences on society, literature, and the arts; and the modern-day intellectual, social, and technological challenges it faces.
Each chapter is structured in the same format--in order to facilitate comparative analysis--opening with a "Tradition at a Glance" feature that provides basic details about the tradition in outline form. Sidebar features include sayings of the founder or other figures, biographical sketches of major historical and modern thinkers, and illustrations of important symbolism and iconography. A glossary, tables of basic facts, maps, timelines, lists of key geographical sites, questions, and further readings are also included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This was definitely a VERY informative book. However, some of the text was hard to understand. It just took a little more in depth reading to figure out but overall I was very satisfied. It taught my a lot about religions, and I'd recommend it as a college course textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars difficult textbook for introductory level world religions course
I have taught introduction to world religions at the undergraduate level for over 15 years, and have used many different world religions textbooks during that time. This particular textbook is not written for undergraduate readers. It's more appropriate as an introduction to world religions for readers with expertise in philosophy, anthropology, history, even areas of religious studies that don't deal with comparison of religious traditions.I have been using this text this semester, and our students are not stupid, but they're struggling with many of the discussions in the text, simply because the writers have pitched their prose to a learned audience with grounding in humanities, social sciences, etc.I found the textbook helpful to me, as the instructor, in giving me information that I could then weave into lectures, but I won't use it again for undergraduate students.there are much better textbooks on the market to introduce undergraduates to the study of religion as well as religious traditions. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview...For Christians
I borrowed this book from the library because I wanted to read a good, objective overview of the religions of the world. While this book does provide good, generic, simple overview explanations of most of the known (non-tribal) religions of the world, it is heavily bent toward Christianity. I have to agree with what reviewer "kiddmugg" said below: it is very snarky. Within each chapter about other religions, the book compares that religion to Christianty. There is even a chart in each chapter, with one column for that chapter's religion and one column for Christianity. Then it goes on to make lengthy, descriptive comparisons to passages in the Bible.

I would not go so far as to say this book is trying to convert people who have other religious beliefs to believe in Christianity (although I would not put it past the author if he happens to be a Christian), but it is obvious that this book is written FOR Christians and, at the very least, is trying to get Christians to understand what the other religions of the world are about.

The title of the book is inappropriate. It should be "A Christian Guide to World Religions".

4-0 out of 5 stars What Would Jesus Say About a Deceptive Book Cover?
I picked this book up on an impulse at the library last night. The book's title and front cover gave me the impression that I had in my lucky little hands an objective, unbiased overview of major world religions. You know what I mean: "Just the facts, ma'am." That sort of thing.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I began flipping through the pages and discovered that Christianity was conspicuously missing from the alphabetical list. I blinked. I checked again. Sure enough, the book jumped straight from Buddhism to Confucianism, giving Jesus the ol' snub. Oh, my goodness! Whatever could be wrong? Could it be that the authors hold Christianity in such low esteem that they decided it wasn't even worth a mention? Could it be that the authors are in fact evil, crazed, Mr. Burns-like fiends who are plotting to destroy Christianity by systematically ignoring it in all of their books?

No--just the opposite, in fact. It turns out that this is a book written by Christians for other Christians. The reason Christianity is not included is that the writers assume you are already a believer and only want to read their book so you can debate with and convert people of other faiths. The book should have been titled, Religions of the World: A Guide for Proselytizing Christians. Instead of going for the "multicultural" look by putting images of a Hindu woman, a Buddha statue, some praying Muslims, and the Ten Commandments tablets on the front cover, they should have showed a Christian trying to convert someone. It's obvious that *somebody* in the production process wanted to be a sneaky little weasel and rope non-Christians into reading the book, too.

I know the Bible is a bit fuzzy on the "honest book marketing" issue, but I have a feeling a certain weasel--or party of weasels--is in serious need of redemption.

I give the book four stars because it's well-organized, visually appealing, and it describes the basic tenets of each religion very clearly. But if you're looking for "objective and unbiased," give it a big fat miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars World Religions
I had read a friend's copy in preparation for a Sunday school class.
I ordered a new copy to give as a Christmas gift.

4-0 out of 5 stars a christian perspective
This book covers some of the more well known religions and some I have never even heard of.It has good tables that contrasts every religion to christianity. It seems written from a christian point of view since each chapter ends with how to relate and find similarities to the other religion to help with your witnessing efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and Easy to Read Overview
I believe the negative reviews below are unfair. As the author states in the Intro: "This book was written primary with the Christian in mind, but not exclusively.. I invite you to consider the arguments.." The book is easy to read, very broad, and clear but very insightful.
It frames the primary issues all religions deal with and shows how Christianity contrasts with other religions. In each case it describes how Christians should present their beliefs to those with other beliefs. The tone is respectful of other religions, but, of course, since the issues are goodness, meaningful lives, just societies, and eternal bliss, it does not paper over the profound differences. I'm so sorry to hear those who preceive differences and the belief that one way is correct as equal to hate. Could science or any other field have advanced with this as the governing assumption? ... Exploring the Religions of Our World builds on teens understanding and experience of their own Catholic Christian faith to study different religious traditions. The text begins with a study of Judeo-Christian history, practice, and tradition before expanding to the study of other ancient religions including Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Shintoism. The text uncovers a variety of religious traditions that sprang from America s Protestant roots including Mormonism, Jehovah s Witnesses, and the Church of Christ, Scientist. Each chapter begins with an introduction that connects the religion to a contemporary person, practice, or teaching. A brief history follows, including information on the founder and other major figures. Other sections include those on scripture or major writings, beliefs and practices, and sacred places and sacred times. Additionally, each chapter ends with a Catholic apologetic focus including ecumenical dialogue between the Catholic Church and the particular religion while pointing out differences and similarities in doctrine, tradition, and practice. Product Description
This descriptive introduction to the world's religions provides an orientation to the study of religion, surveys the history of each of the major world religions, discusses the ways these religions respond to contemporary ethical issues, and reflects the future of religions in the 21st century.By providing worldviews of: indigenous religions (with case studies from Africa and North America), the religions of South and Southeast Asia (Hinduism, Theravada Buddhism, Jainism), religions of East Asia (Daoism, Confucianism, Mahayana Buddhism [Pure Land, Zen, Tibetan], Shinto), religions of the Middle East and beyond (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism); and representative new religious movements (The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness), The World's Religions presents a sympathetic perspective for each. Attention to religious responses to contemporary ethical issues (the ecological crisis, global economics, war, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, gender, and sexual orientation) places the religions in a twenty-first century context.Because it attempts to describe how religions answer basic human questions, this authoritative, lively, and informative book is an excellent introduction to the study of religions for any interested reader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars World of Religions Textbook
Thank you for everything! The book arrived quickly, and there isn't any reason why I would not keep it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for half the price of the best intros...
Young's book works well if you are teaching a class on a budget, as it sells for half the price of the most-often-used scholarly intros to world religions used in the colleges and universities. For the price, it is a good deal. The very few pictures and complete absence of color plates is a money-saver.The basic info is usually sound, but there are exceptions. For instance, Young says Yin is the dragon and Yang is the tiger.I don't mind supplementing a textbook, but I dislike having to correct it.The structure is not optimum. For instance, splitting Theravada and Mahayana Buddhisms (with chapters on Jainism, Daoism, and Confucianism in-between) is not the most logical conceptual framework for an intro student.Dealing with Shinto after Mahayana is also not optimum. And so on...However, price is key for many, and in this case the price is right. All in all, this text works well for a teacher who can use the text as a launching point, supplement the info extensively, and at times, correct it.

Product Description
Revealing the significance of religion in contemporary life, World Religions Today, Third Edition, explores eight major religious traditions--Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, East Asian Religions, indigenous religions, and new religions--as dynamic, ongoing forces in the lives of individuals and in the collective experience of modern societies. This unique volume accomplishes two goals; it connects today's religions to their classical beliefs and practices while also focusing on how these religions have responded to and been transformed by the modern world. The authors combine thorough coverage of the historical background of each religion with up-to-the-minute discussions of its current practices. Each discussion opens with a contemporary scenario of religious experience that illustrates the tension between premodern views and modernity. The volume is enhanced by numerous pedagogical aids--timelines, maps, illustrations, discussion questions, a comprehensive glossary of key terms--and more than 200 photographs. An Instructor's Manual and a Companion Website featuring resources for both students and instructors supplement the text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good for your fireplace, not education
I took Religions of the World class because I wanted to learn more about different cultures. Unfortunately, my teacher chose this book which I found impossible to go through. Thanks to this book, this class what a big frustration for me and I nearly dropped it. I talked to others from my class, and all of them gave up with this book. After paying pretty much good money for this book, in order to write papers or prepare to exams, I ended up using Wikipedia exclusively. Although Wikipedia is not best source so to speak, it definitely helped me to survive this frustrating situation.

This book is packed with a lot of informations, there is no doubt about it. Unfortunately, the authors of this book had no idea how to teach. There is a lot of mess, language is horrible, no clear definitions, and without lectures, unless you have only one class per semester and you don't work, it is nearly impossible to get a good education from it. A textbook is supposed to be student-friendly, and also encourage him/her to study. This piece of *** book is definitely not encouraging to even read assigned pages.

I feel sorry for you if you have to buy this book. I personally feel ripped off and frustrated. I will try to sell my copy on eBay but if not sold for a good money, I will burn it in my fireplace. At least it will be the only good use of this "textbook".

I took nearly 30 classes so far, and my GPA was perfect so I am not an idiot. However, I wish I had never taken this class. It was the worst textbook I have ever seen, and therefore not the best class either. ... Read more

Product Description
What is the nature of revelation in other worldreligions? And what can evangelicals learn from it? In thisprovocative and thoughtful book Gerald McDermott explores thetheological concept of revelation and how evangelicals have respondedto world religions. He then makes a case for God's having revealedhimself outside of Israel and the church. He also explores four casestudies of how Buddhist, Daoist, Confucian and Islamic understandingshave enriched his own concepts of scriptural concepts.

Can one's Christian faith be enriched by encounter with the Analectsof Confucius? Could God's saving deed and disclosure in Jesus Christalone include a wider grace at work in the wisdom of other worldreligions? Evangelical Gerald McDermott says yes. With warrants fromScripture and the tradition of Jonathan Edwards, and a good grasp oftoday's debates on religious pluralism, he makes his case by scrutinyof key writings of non-Christian religions. Here is a fresh voice thatneeds to be heard in the current conversation. - Gabriel Fackre, AbbotProfessor of Christian Theology Emeritus, Andover Newton TheologicalSchool

Evangelicals have been wary of engaging at any depth with faiths otherthan Christianity. Commitment to the 'scandal of particularity' hasmeant that many never consider what the revelatory value ofnon-Christian religions might be. Gerald McDermott provides abeautifully written, timely and much-needed contribution to a fieldwhere most angelic evangelicals fear to tread. - Jeremy Begbie, VicePricipal, Ridley Hall, University of Cambridge

This book makes a solid contribution to the evangelical theology ofreligions. Leaving aside the issue of the fate of the unevangelized,it leads us to expect to learn from people of other faiths and notsuppose that they have nothing to teach us. What a gracious and openspirit this message frees us to have. - Clark H. Pinnock, Professor ofTheology, McMaster Divinity College ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is (that is, from an evangelical perspective)
McDermott's primary thesis is this: Evangelicals can learn from the world's religions. He offers chapters on the historical encounter between evangelicals and the religions of the world; the definition of "revelation"; biblical "suggestions" on the world religions (e.g., God-fearing Gentiles and pagans honored by various prophets and by Jesus); theological considerations (typology, the "scandal of exclusivity," covenants); an account of ancient Christian theologians and their views of the world religions in light of the ascendancy of Christ; and finally the four chapters I found most interesting: one each on Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism and Islam in which McDermott writes explicitly of what he has learned about his own faith, Christianity, from these religions, and ways in which he has come to understand more fully his understanding of the uniqueness of Christ. These final four chapters were quite insightful as an exercise in "comparative" religion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Careful & Insightful Biblical Review Makes this a Great Book
McDermott writes a much-needed book that helps those in the evangelical Christian tradition find a way to truly respect other religious traditions without selling out the store. Citing examples of such biblical figures as Melchizedek, Balaam, and others who speak the word of the one true God but are not members of the Children of God, McDermott shows that there is biblical evidence for Christians to rediscover truths that are deeply imbedded in the Bible from those who do not confess Christ.

The author is very diligent and often reminds his readers that the Christian claim of the uniqueness of Christ is one that needs to be lifted up. Furthermore, what we learn from those outside our faith is not new knowledge per se but may be a different but helpful approach to biblical principles.

The unfortunate title regrettably misleads readers who will probably be surprised to find a careful study on the nature of revelation and a theological overview of Christianity's major theologians. The concluding chapters offer a great inroad to some Eastern and Near Eastern faiths. Explicitly stating that the acknowledgment of Christ as Lord is the only saving confession, McDermott continues to show how God has continued the biblical tradition of revealing himself to those outside the Christian faith.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still unsure of the author's intent
Gerald McDermott would answer in the affirmative to the question posed in the title of his book, "Can Evangelicals Learn From World Religions?".But I still don't know what his main point was in writing this book.I think I could write a similar book and call it "Can Evangelicals Learn From the World of Sports?" and accomplish the same result as Mr. McDermott accomplishes with this book.Christians (and all people) can learn from almost anything.

McDermott seems to be trying to walk both sides of the fence. He boldly claims that Jesus is the only true AND full revelation of God, but he also says that God has revealed aspects of Himself within other religions. So the obvious question becomes, "If these truths can be known within the Christian belief of biblical revelation, then why go to other religions to learn the same things we can learn from Christianity?"He tries to answer this question in a helpful section at the end of the book where he address objections and concerns. His answer focuses on the fact that Jesus used non-Jews to demonstrate true faith (Luke 4:14-30, Matthew 15:21-28, etc) and how some of the pillars within Christianity such as Aquinas (from Aristotle) and Augustine (from Neo-Platonists) had their theology shaped by those outside the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Unfortunately, his answer fails to note that in the case of Jesus, those making a religious response were responding directly to Jesus and not acting within their previous religious system. In the case of Augustine and Aquinas, I think they'd be the last to argue for their own infallibility. But what is our test for truth?Evangelicals have said that when it comes to religious claims, its the Bible that has the final say.I'm not disputing that Christians are unable to learn from other religions, but I think we could learn a lot more by studying our own.Rather than reading Confucius or Muhammad, let's try some Aquinas and Augustine (heck, even C.S. Lewis would be a start).

This book does have some very positive points, otherwise I wouldn't have given it three stars.McDermott will help Christians become more educated about other religions and hopefully this will help us to become more sensitive when dealing with people from those backgrounds. He has also succeeded in showing evangelicals how to properly test all religious claims by a final standard, and that standard is the Bible.Let him be found "not guilty" of abandoning this important doctrine.McDermott acknowledges that this book covers relatively uncharted territory within evangelicalism.I look forward to his further work in this area and more clarification on his views. ... Confused by the varying religious views in your workplace, neighborhood, even your family? Check out the Handbook of World Religions-contrasting 50 faiths with Christianity. Christians believe Jesus' claim to be ""the way and the truth and the life"" (John 14:6)-though dozens of other religions propose varying pathways to God, heaven, or ultimate personal fulfillment. Describing these alternate viewpoints fairly and non-judgmentally, the Handbook of World Religions features major world faiths (Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism), Christian-based religions (Mormonism, the Unification Church, Christian Science), traditional religions (African, Chinese, Native American), and various hard-to-categorize beliefs (Gnosticism, Hare Krishna, New Age Spirituality, Rastafarianism, Wicca). This fully-illustrated guide is a fascinating and useful tool to help Christians understand others' beliefs. ... Read more

This book was good for my World Religion class and work well with other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars What about all the Christian denominations?
Potential buyers should be aware that the author of this book writes overviews of 50 religions outside of mainstream Christianity. The author is a Christian who subtly promotes the Christian religion by comparing it to others where members must earn salvation by doing this or not doing that. One would think that the title of the book would include how all the various Christian denominations compare and contrast to each other, but there is no such comparison. The author has pointed out some of the failings and less than admirable behavior of certain leaders of these non-mainstream Christian religions (e.g. Worldwide Church of God) while ignoring the abuses of Catholic priests and the money scams of TV Christian evangelists. If you share the author's religious views, then this book may be for you.If you are looking for an objective overview of all religions (including Christianity), you will have to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice condensation.
Nice condensation - you can go to a more comprehensive look at any of the religions in other books but this gives a nice, quick overview. The book is printed on very nice shiny paper.

Have you ever wanted to have more information about the religions around the world? Just where do the Mormons, Muslims or Buddhists stand on the matter of who Jesus was and the certainty of heaven and hell and salvation? If you are looking for a book which briefly discusses fifty world beliefs which cuts right to the point, look no further than the "Handbook of World Religions." There is a brief history of the founding of each of these religions. There are many charts with side-by-side comparisons of that religion with Christianity.

There is no need to think that you will be overloaded with information; it gives a brief synopsis of what specific dates and beliefs are involved with a particular religion. There is no lengthy history to wade through looking for just the information you seek, with about four pages devoted to each of the fifty faiths. There are plenty of color photographs of places which the faith holds sacred, as well as what kinds of things are required of the people in that faith.

I have found this book to be invaluable in how to address different statements when dealing with those with a different faith than my own. This is a perfect book for those who want the general information presented a precise manner. I wish I would have had a book like this when I was in college; perhaps it would have made it easier to share my faith with others because I would already have had the basis of what their faith involves. Anyone with an interest in other faiths and what is making them so popular would benefit from this wonderful literary work of art by Len Woods. I can see that "Handbook of World Religions" will be a valued part of my own library

I admit that I have always been fascinated about other religions.Their beliefs, practices, and histories are all so different.
Woods writes of the history, views on salvation and the afterlife, the nature of God, the sacred texts, and etc... of 50 world religions. Some of the religions explained are:

Universism
Scientology
Islam
Christian Science
Kabbalah
Taoism
Wicca
Vodou (Voodoo)
Judaism

The information is given in a simple and fair manner. This would make a great resource for a student of religion, sociology, or history.I just hope that Wood makes a similar book of Christian denominations.

Product Description
Graced with rich illustrations and written by a team of eminent scholars, The Illustrated Guide to World Religions presents a wealth of information on faiths around the world. Each chapter in this volume examines one of seven major world religions--from Judaism to Christianity and from Islam to Buddhism--and contains information about its holidays and festivities, key historical and mythological figures, architectural styles, calendars, language, and important texts.Generously peppered throughout the book are small, succinct sidebars on such issues as the afterlife, the role of women, the importance of saints, and the quest for higher wisdom. We discover, for instance, that Pure Land Buddhism--found mainly in China, Japan, and Tibet--holds that meditation on a particular deity at the moment of death will help insure rebirth into that deity's celestial domain. In Judaism, on the other hand, the concept of an afterlife has never played a central role. Uniquely organized in a manner that encourages comparative analysis, the book's lavish full-color art, maps, and photographs all focus on faith in practice, in both elaborate ritual and everyday life. Religion continues to be a monumental force in a rapidly changing world. Whether tracing the origins of your own faith or attempting to satisfy a curiosity about religious practices an ocean away, The Illustrated Guide to World Religions will be a fascinating and indispensable guide to the complexity of the world's living religions.Amazon.com Review
Few topics are as complex as religion, and few educationalreferences do as impressive a job of summing up in clear, precise, andeasy-to-understand prose the precepts, history, and practices of theworld's major faiths. 4-0 out of 5 stars A terse introduction into the seven major world religions
The belief in a being conceived as the perfect ruler and creator of the universe hasdefined culture, politics and the ethos of humanity since prehistoric times. The effect of religious beliefs are found in the headlines of today's news.

Yet as powerful as religion is most of humankind live in ignorance about other's religious beliefs. This guide can help readers to be better informed about the seven major religions of the world.

I used the book prior to my visit to Buddhistic Thailand.I was in need of a fast refresher course on Buddhism as my college course, "Comparative Religions", taken in the early seventies, had seriously faded.

The information in this book is rudimentary, and though the information stimulated dormant brain cells there was no new insights added. The photos and maps (showing the world influence of each religion) are superb. The writing is clear and easy to understand (most teenagers would easily grasp the concepts). Each chapter lays out information about the basic dogma of each religion, and deals with such issues as the role of women, afterlife (exception being Judaism), holidays and important sacred text.Yet, this guide would have had been more informative if it included charts and gave the readers contemporary illustrations of each faith (ie sidebars that give biographic sketches of today's `leaders and shakers' in each faith). In short it could have been better.

For those that have a comprehension of the major world religions Michael Coogan's book will not add much to your knowledge. For those little to no comprehesion and are in search of a quick, terse introduction into the seven major world religions (Jr. High/High School especially) this guide is recommended. 3.5 starsA side note I found Karen Armstrong's short book "Buddha" to be an excellent read.

5-0 out of 5 stars way not good
this book was wriiten by a scatter brain. don't read it unless u have to for a class like i did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old Religion in the New World
I read Mark Noll's work while in seminary. I found it an excellant exposition of the development of Christianity within America. Since reading it myself, I have recommended it as a basic reading in adult education for understanding today's political melieu. The topic is helpful in understanding the development of religious thought that has invaded our understanding of democracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tight, Fast Paced Survey of North American Christian History
I read Mark Noll's first foray into this subject, his 1992 History of Christianity in the US and Canada. I thought it was good, but a little too academic and scholarly for most people.

This book is a tight condensation of what appeared in that previous volume, plus a good deal more about African-American Christian history, as well as Mexican Christian history.

The thesis of the book seems to be how the separation of church and state in the USA made it possible for many different kinds of Christianity (and of other sects) to flourish.

We read about the influential preaching ministry of George Whitefield and thr writings of Jonathan Edwards in the 1740s and how their ministries impacted thousands of people for Christ.

We learn about the indefatigable ministry work of Francis Asbury, who started Methodist study groups and congregations all through the states.

We learn about Harriet Livermore, the first woman to preach the word in the US Congress.

We also see how the black community drew strength and inspiration from the biblical narratives, both during and after the slavery years.

We see how Catholicism has had a tremendous influence in Mexico and in Canada.

We also see the formidable influence of Pentecostalism, both in the USA and in Mexico.

I appreciated the afterword's mentioning of the some of the influences that impacted American Christianity: The slavery issue, the first amendment which guaranteed that the government would not pass legislation with respect to the establishment of a religion, the ministries of Edwards, Whitefield, and other revivalists, and the westward expansion.

One way this excellent book could be strengthened would be the addition of material about the impact of postmodernism on biblical Christianity. Perhaps there could also be added sections on the influence of Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, and other evangelical megachurch pastors.

This book is great, and it will help you to get a sense of the lay of the land as you seek to learn more about what God has done and what others have done in His name, both good and bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars A simply fantastic book!
In this fascinating book, Professor Mark A. Noll of Wheaton College in Illinois traces the evolution of the various Christian denominations throughout American history. The bulk of the book is taken up with the history of the United States, examining the past very well, and present trends excellently! Following this, the author has 4 chapters that look at certain particulars: theology in America, the Church in Canada (good) and Mexico (excellent!), the fate of European traditions-Lutherans and Roman Catholics, and day-to-day spirituality and the Bible.

Overall, I thought that this was a simply fantastic book! I found the author's analysis to be both fascinating and convincing. Also, I must say that I have not seen a look at recent trends that could compare. So, as you might expect from all of this gushing, I loved this book, and highly recommend it to you! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and open-minded look at other faiths.
Now it's probably unfair of me to rate and review this book, being that I do exactly read a lot of books about world religion. But I was taking the institue class and loved it. And while there are probably many a world religion book that goes into much great detail (how about deeply researching each faith separately?) this is an excellent introduction that goes over the basics of each major world faith. And always in a positive light. I liked the religions so much that I wasn't terribly fascinated by the LDS perspectives, but I suppose they were fairly nice to have around as they solidified the research. I had the most recent update of the book and I adored it. Even if you aren't LDS, this is a great research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and straight forward

Product Description
Exploring the cultural lives of African slaves in the early colonial Portuguese world, with an emphasis on the more than 1 million Central Africans who survived the journey to Brazil, James Sweet lifts a curtain on their lives as Africans rather than as incipient Brazilians. Focusing first on the cultures of Central Africa from which the slaves came--Ndembu, Imbangala, Kongo, and others--Sweet identifies specific cultural rites and beliefs that survived their transplantation to the African-Portuguese diaspora, arguing that they did not give way to immediate creolization in the New World but remained distinctly African for some time.

Slaves transferred many cultural practices from their homelands to Brazil, including kinship structures, divination rituals, judicial ordeals, ritual burials, dietary restrictions, and secret societies. Sweet demonstrates that the structures of many of these practices remained constant during this early period, although the meanings of the rituals were often transformed as slaves coped with their new environment and status. Religious rituals in particular became potent forms of protest against the institution of slavery and its hardships. In addition, Sweet examines how certain African beliefs and customs challenged and ultimately influenced Brazilian Catholicism.

Sweet's analysis sheds new light on African culture in Brazil's slave society while also enriching our understanding of the complex process of creolization and cultural survival. ... Read more

The ubject of the slave trade has been written about before but this bookcovers the more interesting topic of the Protuguese trade in the 15th-18th century, and particularly its affects on Africans and the relationship between the church and the slaves, as well as 'others'.This book is scholarly and perhaps slightly dry, but not startinly so, in fact it is also readable and interesting, refreshing and original.

Surely this book adds scholarship to the period, espcially illuminating the relationship between slaves, brazilian society and the church in both Brazil and Portugal.Of particular interest is the work regarding the inqusitions attempts to snuff out tribal religons that remained among slaves brought to the new world.

I teach comparative religion at a college level and I have found this book to be one of the best I have ever found. Ludwig gives the reader a comprehensive view of the major religions of the world from a spiritual as well as academic perspective. As far as I can see the book is organized around the six dimensions developed by Ninian Smart. Each religion can be analized from the experiential, the mythical, the ritual, the doctrinal, the ethical and the social dimensions, although Ludwig uses some other terms. This is a great resource to get more than a superficial understanding of the worlds sacred paths.

1-0 out of 5 stars Through the lens of Christianity, everything is a cult.
No doubt I will receive many responses and downvotes from Christians, because let's face it, only a Christian would buy this kind of "book." If one is looking for factual, objective information on world religions, then one must look elsewhere! This book is written by someone who has already made up his mind as far as which religion is the "right" one.

Keep this in mind: Do you want the facts, or do you want information filtered through the nonsense of Christianity? This book presents the latter.

Book exactly as described and arrived in a very timely manner.Would do business with them again.Great experience!

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian Guide to Cults and World Relgions
For 25 years I have used this marvelous "little" book. To begin with, let's address the two charges against it: for and from a Chrsitian perspective, and its length. It's stated intent is neither to be exhaustive nor to be anything other than a critique and guide for Christians.

Enough of that.On to its blessed features. It is a quick look at the cults and world religions at the time it was written, which we must understand is 1980.However, the world religions don't change that much, but they do tend to mutate, as does variations of Christianity as well.

What is significant and most useful to this reviewer and I believe to others who will use the book in this way, is its executive summary of each cult/world religion it addresses from both a Biblical evaluation perspective and guidelines for Christian apologetics and witnessing to them.

Still a valuable resource after all these years. One can certainly go into more detail on each if desired, using suggestions Boa offers and finding one's own.

1-0 out of 5 stars What You Would Expect from a Christian
What the author writes is typically what you would expect of a Christian... all others are cults except Christianity.

Actually, of all religions, Islam and Christianity are definitely cults.Holy wars----sound familiar?Be prepared to kill in the name of your god---sound familiar?Be prepared to sacrifice your son on the altar---sound familiar?Kill all livestock, women and children---sound familiar? What kind of god would demand these to be done? The God of the Holy Bible.Yes, it's a cult but as Christians they should fabricate reasons to explain these.

Reading a book about reviewing religions and cults from a viewpoint of a Christian (the author) is simply a waste of time.A book of foolish, biased views...Please recycle the paper. ... Read more
