That might never have changed if I hadn't come out as transgendered. Living as a transguy in rural Maine isn't easy, and I knew I needed support. I turned to the Internet and met a lot of other young guys like me. It was incredible, and I believe that, were it not for their courage and openness, I would have been unable to be honest with myself and my friends and family about my own life. I built a Web site as a way to communicate with online friends and share a little more about myself. Because my cultural background forced me to be. Growing up as a first generation South Asian woman, I noticed that other South Asian women suffered from a chronic problem known as misinformation. Young women were victims of an unrealistic double standard and grew up sheltered from reality, especially when it came to sexuality. There are many taboos surrounding sexuality in my culture. Speaking of sexuality is not allowed. When a loved one is lost to HIV/AIDS, not speaking about it brings grief. And, it hurts especially to know such a death could have been prevented with education. This has been my inspiration for becoming a youth activist. Young people are the future, and people under age 22 are the first generation to spend their entire lives worrying about or confronted with HIV/AIDS. Why would we want to risk our lives through ignorance?

Please contact us A few months ago, I was asked to write reflections on what some people are calling "resurgent youth activism." After several interviews, I wrote the article. But it seemed somewhat basic and trite. Then I read a 1986 article on youth activism. It was identical to mine: most youth appear apathetic; however, many have opinions, concerns, and fears (if only people would listen to them) and others have already been instrumental in bringing about social change. Fourteen years later, am I doomed to write the same article? Fourteen years from now, will someone else again write the same article? More importantly, how can I and other young people help to bring about changes in "youth activism" that will truly be different? How can we work together to create a world where all people are accorded dignity, have enough food, shelter, medication, education, and other basic needs, are invited to participate in decision-making, and are able to live positively and creatively? How do we ensure that this vision is kept in the forefront of our lives, rather than "losing it" until the next "surge of youth activism" emerges?

The league had started a campaign to mobilise young people ahead of the next general election and it would soon embark on an extensive drive to encourage young voters to obtain the correct ID documents and register to vote. Over the last few months, youth from local high schools, universities, and community groups, have inspired me in my work in amazing ways! So far, I have had many opportunities to work with youthand to learn from them. One of the many incredible experiences that I had was at the Lower Mainland Red Cross Global Issues Symposium for Youth. At this event, 90 high-school students participated in four days of interactive activities in order to learn about many different global issuesincluding the humanitarian crisis of landmines. I dont know that I can even express the energy and enthusiasm that this group of students demonstrated throughout the event. The students were full of questions and interest while I spoke to them about the global landmine crisis, after which I couldnt keep them from asking me about what more they could do to help! It was an incredible experience because I was able to see so clearly what youth have to offerideas, passion, commitment, and a strong belief that we can change the worldto help the world cope with such critical issues as landmines.

Extractions: Home Abstracts Bios Over the past few years, on local and global levels and everywhere in between, a movement has been developing, increasing in volume, demanding to be heard. Drawing on hip hops history of DIY ethics and insightful and incisive social commentary, and applying it to their own historical and lived experiences, First Nations youth are creating spaces for personal and political expression through hip hop and other forms of youth-oriented media. The following article comes in two parts: two pieces of dialogue with two people who have been putting in work for quite some time, and who have developed reputations as performers whose art achieves what I feel should be the fundamental goals of good hip hop, and good music in general getting people to shake their asses like Mystikal and shake up the system like Malcolm. The first piece is a transcipt of a conversation with Derek Edenshaw, an accomplished freestyler (sky rapping for the older heads) and emcee who is also a public spokesperson for the Native Youth Movement. The second piece had to be conducted via email due to geographic circumstances, and is a series of questions answered by Skeena Reece, a singer, writer, and artist who is currently working at a radio station in Fiji.
