What an interesting book, very clever prose, which in itself relieves stress.All of Dr. Sapolsky's research and especially his ending words on the elevating stress are quite helpful.

When Baboons are Just Not Enough...
If you've finished the "Primate's Memoir" and still are hungering for more, it's time to find out why zebras are so much less prone to stress-related diseases than us, humans. This is a more technical book and you'll end up learning some cool vocabulary in addition to gaining basic understanding of body's reaction to varying degrees of stress.

Describes the problem, but Avoids the Solution
Dr Sapolsky seems to want to accurately and honestly report how stress works in our lives, and he does so. However, the implied question is what to do about it, and this question isn't faced as squarely. The 8000 pound zebra in the living room of this topic is that our style of life and culture produces stress and this is not just a challenging thing, it is a bad thing.

To decrease stress, the culture has to change, and/or the the individual has to insulate him or herself from the typical demands of culture--externally imposed demands and internalized demands from upbringing. This is the conclusion that seems logical but which Sapolsky in the end doesn't make. His advice is to live the same way but to 'get lucky' because stressors affect different people differing amounts for unknown reasons. A writer who addresses the same question more squarely (if less well edited) is Majid Ali--see What Do Lions Know About Stress

Light, enjoyable!
This is the third book I have read in the series and I've enjoyed them all. While the plots are humorous and light, I still find well written lines that I enjoy rereading and savoring. This author is talented. :)

I accidentally jumped ahead on this one and will go back and read the rest in order. I suggest doing that because some of the relationships carry through and develop through the series.

no green eggs and ham this
My uncle bought this for us when I was 5 or 6 years old. It immediately appealed. I still remember one of the beasts by heart:
boob boober, bab boober, boob boober bubs, they float on the water like blubbery tubs. They're no good to eat, you can't cook 'em like steaks, but they're handy in crossing small oceans and lakes!
I think that's it anyway.

Even at that age, I wasn't impressed by the cat in the hat or green eggs and ham, though of all the popular Seuss books, those seem to me to be the least juvenile (which I guess is a dumb criticism since that's the audience . . . ).

I like to buy these for people with kids of that age, 5 or 6.

Charming, sophisticated, Dr. Seuss at his best. I highly recommend this to any mom & dad who've exhausted the 4 sentence per page books -- you'll enjoy them as much as your kids -- if not more.

Altered perspectives for life
This book introduced "paradigm shifting" into my intellectual vocabulary before I even knew what such a thing was.

Many, many, many years ago (Nixon was President, I think) I read this and was changed. I can remember the the images, the textures, the smells (Ah! The ditto machine and its purple perfume!) and all my surroundings. I was sitting in the elementary school library, facing northwest toward the door. Lured by the title and the premise, I had taken the volume to my assigned seat ("Library" was a class back then, as it should have been) and quickly devoured it.

The concept - that our 26-letter alphabet was an arbitrary collection and not a universal constant on a par with gravity - had never entered my cartoon-addled mind. It sparked an awareness of similar cultural and philosophical constrictions that I have expanded and retained to this day.

On the ground intelligence serves to verify the fundemental analysis
This book is NOT even similar to Fundamental Analysis, by Graham ( Buffet's peer so to speak - value investing), it is not
Technical Analysis book. It is similar to Lynch's book - One up on Wall Street, but better -I am a bit biased possibly - I been in the Acorn Fund since about 1986 or so, and like him I have my BSEE,although I am not as heavily invested or concentrated in that fund anymore. Acorn Funds was bought by Liberty Funds, which was then bought by Columbia (BoA). I would give One up on Wall Street four stars, Wagner gets five, I do not rate it as a fundamental analysis book, nor technical analysis book.It's no longer a small cap fund with 200 million or so in assets when I opened my account in ACRNX -it's now a mid cap growth fund, with 11 billion dollars in assets. ACRNX has been a top rated five star fund, by Morningstar. for the vast majority of time since 1986, if not the entire time, with lower than average risk, low turnover, and superior returns.If you want something like an automated fundamental analysis that I believe you can modify to your taste and Wagner's approach - check outAmerican Individual Investors( [...] ) and order the stock screening program - it has a stock screening program that attempts to put Wagner's approach and about 30 other expert's selection method into a software program and database for screening stocks. Wagner does indeed attempt to discourage investors from investing perhaps their entire stock portfolio in individual stocks; since,most people do not have the resources or time to do it his way, visiting companies, plant inspections, listen in on corporate meetings/media events, going to the trade shows - classical intelligence work. A critical part of his method - one will never get the best intelligence by satellite alone- that probably will never happen.The additional piece of information that critical -he states that up to 50%of ones stock investments should be in overseas stocks and that wasin 1997 - which makes the on the ground intelligence gathering for the vast majority of individual investors near impossible. Then there is the desk work - research of annual reports, SEC filing,etc - Fundamental Analysis. But, Wagner was starting to phase out and going into consulting/semi retirement for Liberty when the Internet was starting coming up to speed or mature a bit- which make it easier for the individual investor. I was slightly surprised that Wagner used options on the S&P index. I plan on at least loaning my copy of this book to my niece, for graduation she recieve a subsription to AAII. I doubt even Wagner would advise some one to buy ACRNX today if they had to pay a load.Nor advise anyone to pay front end or back end load on the purchase of the shares of any Mutual Fund. There just are too many good to excellent funds with good to excellent mutual fund managers that do not have front end or back end loads.

Insightful, educational and entertaining!
I have spent the last decade working in the investments industry and only wish I had discoverd Ralph Wanger's book sooner.He is right on target with is investment process and philosopy.In addition, his book is not some dry, droll, academic textbook, he is equally entertaining as he shares his words of wisdom!...

One to buy, keep and re-read...
I bought this book when it first came out.It is an easy read, but the insights are timeless.I probably read five or six investment books a year.Of those, I re-read very few.This one I re-read every two or three years because it just reinforces the basics and it is enjoyable. Books like this are very helpful in understanding market psychology and volatility.I am a basic fundamental investor, but not understanding fear and greed will impact your successes and losses when dealing with Mr. Market.Do yourself a favor, buy it and read it.

Easy read, broad concepts - for the mutual fund investor
If you are looking for a book on how to pick small cap stocks, this book is not for you.

If you are looking for reasons why mutual funds are better off than picking stocks on your own, this book will offer you many such reasons.

Mr Wanger invests in what I would conclude as a fundamental-value style and indeed there are certain principles that a reader may be able to extract and apply to his own stock picking approach, eg investing in themes, buying value etc.

However, the more I read, the more the book seemed to promote mutual funds for the lay investor. Depending on your personal preferences, that may indeed be the way to go for some of you.

I offer the following quote from page 237 as a summary of this book:

'Don't overpay, no matter how much you like a company. Invest in themes that will give a company a long-term franchise. Invest downstream from technology. Think and invest globally. Find stocks to own, not trade.'

Learn What the Big Boys Know

I am a huge fan of House M.D. and I am now a huge fan of Barbara Barnett. This book proved that no matter how many times you have seen the show, you cannot know everything about it. This book is a guide and reference book to the series that I hope will be updated yearly.

An Indispensable Guide To An Indispensable Show
Chasing Zebras is an informative, thought-provoking, exhaustive effort that does what any guide like this should do: it delves deep into the subtleties and minutiae of the magic of the show and in the process explains why so many fans are so deeply in love with it in the first place.The guide is a great introduction for newbies to the show or folks coming into it in the middle of a season as well as a great analytical work for House MD obsessives like me.

This book teaches you how to appreciate good drama
I've seen no more than 6 episodes of HOUSE, M.D., but that was enough for me to enjoy and benefit from "Chasing Zebras." House is not my kind of guy--too rude--but the show appealed to me for some reason. This book helped me understand why. House claims he only cares about solving the medical mysteries, yet somehow you sense that he really has compassion for many of his patients. The book explains the subtle comments and signs that indicate he does. It reflects skillful scriptwriting and acting. In addition, the book's in-depth analysis of House as a brilliant but troubled person humanizes him and creates a level of sympathy that somewhat excuses his behavior. The other main characters are profiled as well. These profiles are a reminder that the more you know about someone--on TV or in real life--the more connected with them you feel.

What this book really did for me, though, was teach me to better understand and appreciate good scriptwriting. Author Barnett, whose own writing I found impressive, explains how the stories and the characters are developed and presented. I plan to watch the show more often, and will be looking and listening more closely for things that reveal motives and insights into the personalites of the characters. I think anyone reading this book will become a smarter viewer, not only of this series, but of other dramas.

This book starts well and gives you effective tips on profiling the ideal prospect candidate to turn the reality of "as probability to close goes down the cost to convert goes up" to your advantage. It hits home the fact that the customer you gain tomorrow will closely look like the customer you have today.The book does run short of gas towards the end on how to leverage the value of your offering to the prospect. I recommend Jill Konrath's books "Selling to Big Companies and SNAP Selling" for more effective ways on how to position value to the prospect. A great book to introduce Pattern Recognition!
I used this book in my preschool classroom with 3-5 year olds and they really enjoyed it. It starts out basic, "Patterns are lines and shapes that repeat..Some patterns are simple and some are not. It then goes on to describe certain places children can look for patterns and then asks, "Can you find patterns in your lunch snack? (with pictures of strawberries, kiwi, and sliced oranges), on shells? in vegetables? on insects? on flowers? etc. It is a great way to get children to begin looking around at their everyday environments and to acknowledge patterns of all forms. Definitely pick up a copy of this book if your children are showing interest in patterns or you need something to help you introduce this concept to them!

An Inappropriate Agenda Driven Children's Book
I find this book inappropriate for children. Children do not think of race or predjudices, it is taught. The entire emphasis of the book is racial. In the book some of the zebras lose all of their black stripes (making them all white), some of the zebras lose all their white stripes (making them all black). The book says" would they see themselves different? Would color make a difference? Or would they only see black and white and not what was in their heart?"

I bought a second copy.
I really love the wonderful message this book delivers, enough to buy another copy and keep them both.

People are more alike than they are different and this book does a great job of not letting us forget that beautiful message.

I highly recommend this book.The artwork is wonderful and I am so glad I purchased it.

delightful book on prejudice for children, if your family believes in God
As a whole, I would highly recommend this beautifully illustrated book on racism and prejudice. It is fun to read and an excellent way to address the topic with the youngest of children.

The only thing that I think should be mentioned is it does (briefly) include religious context that might not be appropriate for all families when it concludes that it is god who was smart enough to make the zebras the way they are. While not promoting any specific god, this does make it inappropriate for a public school setting or for families of certain religious beliefs.

Good Book!
I work in a residential facility with different nationalities/ ethnicities of children.The issue raises quite often and this is a simple lesson that because people "look" different doesn't mean that we can't like one another and be friends.The end is a bit unrealistic that black and white come together to form one, but I truly believe that people can come together and form a cooperative, respectful union without becoming the same...differences are good and there doesn't have to be conformity.

An important message for any age
It's never to early to teach your child the importance of harmony and tolerance and this little book is a great place to start.When some zebras lose their white stripes and others their black stripes, they must look inside themselves and each other to learn to get along.

I especially appreciated the very last page which placed the zebras with many children of different races and nationalities so that my 5-year old and I could talk about the differences in people, too. ... Read more

This book might have been entitled "How the Zebra got its stripes" - it is like the well-known "just-so" stories in that sense.However, the way the zebra gets stripes is quite imaginative.The artwork is outstanding - colorful, somewhat abstract, and fits the text perfectly.

An astounding spy thriller by the master
This thriller novel kicks off with Dr. Carpenter, a British medical doctor, who gets orders to board the USS Dolphin in the UK. The US nuclear submarine Dolphin has a near-impossible mission: it has to cruise underneath the ice pack of the Arctic to find and save the inhabitants of Ice Station Zebra, a scientific meteorological station drifting with the ice pack somewhere north of the Arctic Circle. Ice Station Zebra was destroyed by a fire, but little does anyone know that fire at Ice Station Zebra was due to sabotage, and that one of the survivors is a ruthless killer. Furthermore, Dr. Carpenter is not what he seems to be and it later becomes evident that he has more staked in this cruise than originally suggested.

What I liked about the story is how Alistair MacLean demonstrated his writing ability and mastery of the genre to create an atmosphere that gets the reader to feel that he/she is also inside the submarine and can sense, feel, smell and experience the conflict, fear and tension on board the submarine. Definitely not as turbo-paced as Matthew Reilly's more modern thriller novel with a nearly similar name, Ice Station, MacLean's book does not lack in pace, but the pace is controlled to such a degree that the right amount of suspense is created and that the tension builds up as the story progresses. Reilly's Ice Station is more about countless pages of jet-propelled action and relentless mindless violence, whereas MacLean's Ice Station Zebra consists of the finesse of expert handling of suspense, intrigue and tension.

Although the dialogue may be more reminiscent of the era that the book was written in, this is truly still a masterpiece of the thriller genre and can almost serve as a template for thriller writers, where you have a plot stripped of all the unnecessary fluff that so many modern thrillers suffer from, which only serves to increase the page count and nothing much else.

Good plot, but the heroes are a tad unrealistic
The is the first of MacLean's books I can recall reading and it's not bad. Readers accustomed to modern thrillers that bolt out of the gate at 100 miles an hour should bear in mind this was written about 35 years ago when authors were allowed to build up tension. A mysterious British specialist boards a U.S. submarine that has been urgently dispatched to figure out what has happened to Ice Station Zebra, a top secret base drifting on ice near the North Pole. After many travails the specialist reaches the burned out station and quickly figures out that one of the nine survivors deliberately set the fire and murdered some of his colleagues. The survivors all board the submarine, which experiences a string of suspicious accidents, deaths and disasters. The idea is a good one but MacLean's characters are little more than one-dimensional. The superbly talented specialist is carrying a dark secret, the U.S. submariners are all superheroes, and like a previous reviewer, I was pretty sure I knew who the villain was the first time he appeared in print.

An easygoing thriller that could have been better!
Ice Station Zebra, an arctic meteorological station, located on the ever drifting pack ice of the high Arctic, has been destroyed by an equipment fire. The Dolphin, an American nuclear submarine, is about to set sail on a dangerous high speed mission under the polar ice cap to rescue the badly injured team.But, just as one would suspect from a cold war thriller, all is not as it seems. Ice Station Zebra is a good deal more than just a scientific meteorological station. The scientific team is not just a collection of scientists. One of them is a ruthless killer for which the achievement of his mysterious secret mission against the Americans and the Brits may even require the cold-blooded execution of the entire crew of the Dolphin. Nor is Doctor Carpenter, a British volunteer member of the Dolphin's crew ostensibly along to seek out his brother who was part of Ice Station Zebra's stricken team, precisely what he shows to the world.

As thrillers go, "Ice Station Zebra" is certainly enjoyable but it's a long, long way from what most readers would label a compelling page turner. It's got all the requisite ingredients to be sure - murder, sabotage, hidden identities, spies, accidents, cliff-hangers - but I think it could have been so much more. The parts of the story that took place inside the submarine were interesting and, at times, even exciting. But the action never reached the breathless urgent pace that was more recently achieved in other submarine thrillers such as "Hunt for Red October" or Larry Bond's "Dangerous Ground". The Arctic itself as an environment which can be stunning in its breathtaking beauty and is always fraught with danger and the potential for deadly accidents was never truly exploited as a part of the story to anywhere near the extent that it might have been.

"Ice Station Zebra" is an enjoyable change of pace and nice easy brain candy reading that won't tax the little grey cells. It just won't make anyone's top ten list of the best all-time spy vs spy thrillers!

Good action marred by cliched ending
In Ice Station Zebra, a British secret service agent is given the aid of a U.S. nuclear submarine to investigate the fire that destroyed Ice Station Zebra, a weather research station that is also testing intelligence technology.

Alistair MacLean really knows how to set up a story and characters. Within a few pages, we know the gritty world of the submarine, the hard-bitten men who serve in her, and the intense preoccupation of Carpenter, the narrator, who has both a professional and personal stake in discovering the fate of the ice station and the secret technology. MacLean is outstanding when he writes about jeopardy, and the men and the sub are in constant danger throughout the book.

I found the resolution of the mystery very disappointing and substandard, straight out of an old Columbo in which the rumpled detective assembled the suspects in a room and then talked us through the unlikely scenario that made that person the murderer. It was made even worse by the fact that I guessed who the killer was on the very first page in which the character appeared.

For that reason, I couldn't really recommend this particular book, though I am a fan of the author and plan to read more of his thrillers in the future.

Probably MacLean's Best
First, Alistair MacLean is not one of my favorite authors.He recycles his plots over and over again.The Golden Rendezvous and Sanatorini are excellent examples of this.However, this book was the second MacLean novel I read, and thus the plot was completely new to me and fortunately, utterly original for MacLean.I was interested in the film version (this is much better) and was trying to find out what the storyline was.I had previously read Where Eagles Dare which I had found to be tasteful.Ice Station Zebra blew me away.I did not know at first what kind of book I was reading.I assumed that it was an action-adventure flick like Where Eagles Dare.It's not.It's much more.There is only one person shot in the entire book, but this is not the conflict.The conflict lies in fighting against the cold, a death of drowning, and an invisible enemy who is stalking you at every step.Like another reviewer said, this book shows that a legitimately good spy novel can be made without gratuitous violence and sex.There is no female element is this novel (sorry ladies) and the violence is realistic, yet not overdone.One of the things I loved about this novel is the way MacLean tells the story in the 1rst person, but still manages to not let us know everything that is going on in the main character's head.Thrilling read.Crisp Dialogue.The Perfect novel.Nothing was lacking.One of those few books that I have read more than once, and it never gets old. ... last book ever from this author
one of the reason to read a romance book is to have a smile on your face at the end.there was no smile after reading this book, i wanted to burn it!!!the ending left you feeling very disappointed.it seems the heroine has gone through a struggle and still ended up the loser.not my kind of book/story and hate the fact that i wasted money and time on this book.never again for this author.

Crazy Mayzie
Sophia Johnson is a fairly new auther to me. I read the last book in this series first and enjoyed it enough to seek out the others. I am a fan of well written midieval romance and this author does it very well. I will be watching for more of her work.

Always Mine Time travel Romance;
I was really disappointed with this book. It would have been a great romance if the reincarnation body soul was left out. I thought I was reading a reincarnation Creed at the end of the story. The plot and threme of modern day Lydia in love with hot looking Scotish laird Damron and travel back to 1072,was good, but I didn't like her coming into the body of Brianna instead of her own body. What I couldn't understand is when Lydia/Brianna finally realize she was at last with the man she was in love with since childhood. Why did she keep herself distance. The conflict between the two was good. However they didn't grow together at the end. I didn't like the still born birth of their infant daughter. I don't know why the author put that in? This was the first Sophia Johnson book I'd read And I wasn't impress.

Could Have Been A Contender
This story just didn't gel for me.I mean Lydia finally gets the chance to meet the man she had been longing for her entire life and spends most of the book fighting and acting like a spoiled brat instead of a modern woman.She just didn't seem like the same level-headed person who was presented in the beginning of the book. I just felt that a person with her experience from being married, divorced and having a very impressive resume to boot would have used her brains more than her preferred method of cursing and name calling to deal with her problems.The only things left out of her repertoire was stamping her feet and sticking out her tongue.At least Damron had an excuse for his behavior actually being from that time while Lydia dealt with her problems like someone without a brain. Another aspect of Lydia's character that didn't gel for me was that she came across as a virginal school girl when dealing with the sexual aspects of the book instead of a grown woman with some experience. ... Amazing History Lesson
Lately I have been looking for authors outside of my usual standards - the tried and true, like Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn and the like - and happened upon this book in the store.I was intrigued by the storyline and was not disappointed.

As another reviewer remarked, the book does start out slowly but develops quickly and soon hooks you.What really won me over was Sinclair's history lesson on the Twelve Days of Christmas.I had never known about the customs and traditions of the season and it was wonderful how she set the story around this theme.For that reason alone, the book is worth a read.

The characters are masterfully developed.I loved both the characters of Bromwyn and Ranulf, as well as the supporting characters.I eagerly await Sinclair's follow up stories with Edythe and Lily, particularly the relationship unfolding between Edythe and Tyr.

This would be a great book to read, curled up in a comfortable chair, on a cold winter day.

Good Read
Good tale of 'beauty is more than skin deep'.I like Michele's books because the characters face several smaller, beatable obstacles instead of most romantic novels that contain one, seemingly insurmountable obstacle that miraculously works out in the end.I also liked the cast of characters that I'm sure will have their own spin offs coming soon.

A christmas gift....
I loved Sinclair's previous three novels, and this one is no exception. I would have rated it 4 1/2 if I could.

The novel starts with the old knight Laon finding and dragging Deadeye, or Ranulf, to his new and rightful place as Lord Anscombe.A warrior who has no interest in being a Lord, yet ordered by the new King Henry to go make peace in upper England, the reluctant Ranulf agrees.Yet before they land on England's shores Laon has an accident and makes Ranulf promise to marry his youngest and beautiful daughter Lily.

Laon's three daughters are; the brave and strong Bronwyn, the witty yet sharp Edythe and the beautiful and naive (and somewhat shallow) Lily.The younger daughters are exceptionally beautiful, and even though Bronwyn is beautiful in her own right, she is always upstaged by her sisters and therefore has very low self esteem.

However, when Ranulf first see's Bronwyn his soul calls to hers and she also falls in love with him almost immediately.But what good would a book be is ended there... romance is never smooth sailing.With interference of his friend Tyr and Bronwyn's sisters, upheaval and havoc are let loose.Then of course there is the quintessential `mad man' who loves Bronwyn and will stop at nothing to claim her.And so ensures the trial and tribulation that end with happily ever after.

This novel starts slow but by about ¼ in, it picks up pace and hooks you.The protagonists are scarred and insecure, which is very much the theme - learning to be vulnerable and trust their love to someone else despite past hurts.The family and friends dynamics are great and characters are well written and rounded; it is worth the money, and a keeper that will be re-read.Michele Sinclair, along with Paula Quinn fill the gap Julie Garwood has left (although she, in my humble opinion will always be the queen!) in this genre.

P.S. Sinclair hooks you in the for the next one; the budding and very lovely romance between Tyr and Eydthe.I cannot wait for their story, what secrets is Tyr keeping?

When I saw that Sinclair had this book coming out, I was disappointed that it was not from her Highlander series (I think she must have gotten stumped with the stories for the twin brothers and I am nervous that she is taking a longer break or just flat out done with them *sniffle*) This story was fantastic.

Ranulf has had a hard life and his scared visage has made him a hard man and a very good commander for the new King Henry II. Ranulf is more or less forced to be lord of Hunswick by the king and is escorted by none other than Laon, the father of the heroine. The father died on the way to Ranulf's new keep and Ranulf promised a dying Laon that he would marry his youngest daughter to keep his three daughters safe.

Laon had three daughters: Bronwyn, the brave leader. Edythe the fiery genius. and Lillabet the shallow beauty. Bronwyn is beautiful in her own right, but always upstaged by her younger sisters.

Bronwyn ends up caring for the scarred lord, Ranulf, when he is wounded in the shoulder and, in the process, they fall in love. Her sisters pick the wrong time to try to fix the problems that they cause (there are many and it would be pointless to try to describe their antics in a way that does not turn a reader away from the next installments. Just understand that they are trouble and Bronwyn loves them anyway) and almost force the hero and heroine apart.

There are life threatening events, of course, that bring characters together and the two sisters will keep you smiling through the book. Bronwyn and Ranulf are perfect for each other because they both understand that perfect beauty or the lack there of, means nothing to two people that love each other unconditionally. This book was wonderfully writen and I am very much so looking forward to any continuation from either of this author's series.

I love all her books and this one is no exception. Her characters just flow to life and you really get to know them as people. It's a real gift she has. I loved the story. A Psychotic killing contest.
"Zebra" is focused on the related crimes in San Francisco. But the "Zebra" crimes were actually happening state-wide. They were racially motivated, a psychopathic race to kill enough innocent victims to rate the killer as a "Death Angel."

Some of the killers were intellectually deficient and almost always chose the victims at random, on impulse. They were encouraged to seek out children or women as victims.

True to the expectations of some investigators, the killers were cowards and offered no resistance when arrested.

The name "Zebra" was inspired by the "Z as in Zebra" radio channel that was reserved for the investigation. Although there are other racial connotations for the case name.

The statistics in San Francisco were 23 assaults resulting in 15 deaths and numerous survivors scarred in one way or the other from the assault that they survived. Mr. Howard does a commendable job portraying the victims as everyday people rather than merely numbered victims.

I echo the surprise of the other reviewer that this case hasn't recieved more attention over the years. It was a huge case,more like conspiracy,of murder throughout California that had as amany as 70+ victims!

Clark Howard's "Zebra" is a very good read for any true crime reader.

why is this case considered closed??it should still be open
considering just how limited/censoredthe info on this case is, Zebra is an OK read, I wish it was more from the police perspective as the killer perspective has to have some serious conjecture.Why this case was never fully solved is astounding ,they convict a few people for a 14 murders, when there were perhaps dozens of killers and 70+ confirmed murders,the pattern was Black Muslims, so how hard could it have been to pursue that avenue.

Incredible story, compelling characters
I simply cannot understand why the media covers up stories like this but gives stories that are far less provoking front page news.It is frightening to know that many of the ideals revealed in this novel still exist today.I highly recommend this novel for anyone interested in true crime.It was so well written, it was easy to foget that these events actually happened.

Why Have We Not Heard Of These Murders?
I read somewhere on the internet a few weeks ago about the Zebra murders and wondered what the heck was that about, and how it was said that the main-stream-media had ignored this huge news item and then the book about it.BINGO!I knew I had to read the book right away, and did!It is true, like any good crime story, once you start reading it, you can't put it down.The chapter about the tracing of the gun was an interesting short story in itself.

The murders occurred in 1973 in San Francisco, and I talked to some people about it and they never heard of it, and neither did I ever recall hearing anything about it myself.But, basically these murders held a terror siege on the city of San Francisco for nearly six months!The brutality of these murders was shocking!Who they were committed by, for, and against was just as shocking.The story ends each chapter with a short memorial of each victim as the body counts begins to build up.

Though the story is well-written by a capable author, I must say there was one part in the book that was confusing and I thought the author could have stated it better.It read, "While the white family had its picnic and Ward Anderson visted his friend, the two black Muslims known an Skullcap and Rims had a philosophical discussion on the subject of murder".This part had me thinking that Ward was talking to the two Muslims as pals and I only realized this was a mistake several pages down as the story wasn't making any sense.

So, why was this book and and essentially racist crime news ignored by the big media?Sigh... somethings never change (look at today's current events).It involved race and religious beliefs, something the Left and the MSM won't touch unless it coincides with their agenda.This time it didn't, and thus, the deafening silence.

Chilling Tale of Mass Murder and Savagery
This book recounts the horrifying crime spree known as the Zebra killings that happened in the Bay Area in the early 1970's.This spree, committed by black members of an offshoot of the Muslim religion, was done in an attempt for the murderers to win "Death Angel" status.This dubious honor was given to any "true believer" who murdered a certain number of white children, white women, or white men, or a combination of the three.(One received more credit for slaying a child or woman than a man supposedly because it would take more fortitude to do it.However, the author believes [with good reason, I think] it had more to do with the murderers being cowards afraid of anyone who might fight back.)Taking place over several months, the killers took several lives and wounded others in their barbaric attempt to win Death Angel wings.The author does a splendid job in recreating the events as well as allowing the reader to get inside the head of the people who actually believed it to be an honor to murder others.What is even more chilling than the specific Zebra murders is the fact that other Death Angels supposedly existed in California and could be walking the streets even today.For those with a strong stomach wishing to find out about a savage wave of crime (a wave that has strangely been forgotten), this is a must read. ... Great insights from a GM
Great book. Do you love chess? Get it, read it. Although quite advanced, it should be fun for all levels of players. Mr. Rowson is an excellent writer and is getting better with each new book he writes. This one will probably be recognized as a modern classic.

Extraordinary
Most agree that Rowson's book is entertaining but some disagree about whether it will improve your chess.I'm mystified by the critiques.This book, while less of an enthusiastic romp than Deadly Sins, is far more thoughtful while remaining a very enjoyable read.The reason Zebras should improve your chess is because it should fundamentally change the approach most players have to improvement (including, incidentally, the continued accumulation of most types of chess books).Another notable aspect of the book is that, while it may well be that many of the topics Rowson introduces are nebulous, he manages to make them as concrete as possible through his game annotations.I cannot readily recall a more enlightening and entertaining style of annotation - Sahovski Informator in Technicolor!

Largely, I suppose, due to his non-chess academic interests, Rowson brings a unique dimension to his chess writing. He is not the first chess writer to try to gain a perspective on meta-cognition in chess and then to try also to turn whatever understanding we may obtain of that realm to some practical use in real play, but he is certainly among the best.Rowson's approach to this difficult subject area is to creatively twist and turn the problems this way and that while offering observations that are fascinating and merit much further consideration.He does this with such facility - and with such humility - that it all seems quite casual. Rowson clearly brings something special to chess pedagogy, and I hope he continues to write.

Help for the improving adult
I have been a near master for the last 4-5 years. With a full time job, kids, etc. I have all the built in excuses necessary. Chess for Zebras, by Rowson, is one of the best books I have laid my hands on, and I have plenty. My issues are not in the strength of my play, my opening prepation, my physical preparation, or my lack of tactical ability. My shortcomings, and I venture to guess some of yours as well, come from my study methods. I work hard, know enough opening theory, but I do not play enough games. Consequently I am not in enough "real-life" situations to help me improve on my ability to concentrate. This book is helpful in that it opens up your mind to new possibilities, knew ideas on how you can make yourself concentrate better, enjoy the game, and just play Chess. Rowson's style is very captivating, and he has created a work that sheds a different light on the subject of Chess. I am determined to make master, (even in my mid to late 40's)and after reading this book and his other great work, The Seven Deadly Chess Sins, I have gained 36 points in my last two tournaments, with my only loss coming to a GM. With a 50 percent score against NM and FM's I have to believe that I am playing better. If I am playing stronger due to an illusion Rowson has helped me create, then I can summize that his book hashad the intended result. I strongly urge anyone to pick up the book, but I would suggest that the target audience is more for players that have "hit the wall." Players with ratings north of 1800 will benefit the most from this original work.

Very Interesting
This thought provoking collection of essays spans many subjects,
including chess improvement, chess psychology at the board, and White's
advantage of the first move.There is decent practical advice, for
example, to emphasize training over knowledge, to adapt your frame of
mind to the type of position on the board, and to avoid what he calls
the "noble apprentice" syndrome.Rowson writes skillfully and
humorously, and his message is not without substance.Still, I have
doubts about many of Rowson's speculations (that is what they are), and
this was a bit of a missed opportunity in light of the growing body of
research into chess and cognitive science.

How to improve when you have hit a plateau for years!
If you have been playing chess for years and seem to have stopped improving for awhile then "Chess for Zebras" may be for you. Sometimes you have a set way of thinking and even with good books on games with analysis, tactics, chess traps and more you don't improve. Well, these may be great books (certainly I recommend all of them), but you may need to add to your collection a book that gives a a "different point of view". That is "Chess for Zebras". Okay, some of the ideas may be a little questionable, but you need to do what works for you! And, as with any book, you don't need to take everything as gospil. Got the info I needed.
I thought about getting a couple of zebra finches after seeing a pair in a local retail store.They look so adoreable.I bought this book to find out what thier care was all about.Turns out, a lot of care is required so I decided not to get any.If you do get any, this book will come in very handy.

I had finches scince i was six years old and i always loved them. I have taken care of them in my own way but i decided i wanted to know more details about them, so i checked out this book and it taught me alot of stuff about them. It teaches you how to take care of them and how to help them have a happy nest, also to keep them healthy and happy.

This book is a complete owner's manual for people who own zebra finches .It is an excellent book and arrived on the date projected .

This is an excellent book but it is too short. I would have liked to have seen more information.

His chapter on habitat and distribution is great, it follows with behavior and flocks and colonies. He has interesting and useful pictures of the birds in the wild, but they are all on one page. You kind of say, ''oh,'' when it should have been ''wow.''

It had tremendous potential but it seems like someone took a scissor and hacked off too much original content.

The illustrations are great, and they are all of Zebra finches. He includes drawings and pictures of aviaries, and other housing options, suggestions galore.

Then, in the section on ''health care,'' someone cut and pasted a picture of a canary having its nails clipped.

It places a caption, ¨trim your bird's nails carefully to avoid injury.¨ It just seems to scream ''aw to hell with it, we gotta press.'' Bad, shabby attitude.

... Hopefully trim your Zebra's nails more carefully, than the guys who edited the book would have!

The canary shown is also twice the size of a Zebra finch. The author suggests holding the little claw up to a light, to not cut into a blood vessel; far from what the picture demonstrates.

Despite the shortcomings, which appear to be out of the author, Hans Jurgen Martin's control, ¨Zebra Finches¨ is an informative, fun read. His love for these little birds is so clear, and just as contagious.

A useful tool for clinical teaching
Zebra cards are not only funny...

Each of them is an opportunity to train and discuss differential diagnosis and to give a nice surprise when you reverse the card.

A thoroughly enjoyable read
A bright and caring heroine.
