This is a report of a conference held by the Institute of Physical Sciences in Medicine. A Guide for Advisors and Students

Rationale: Throughout history advancements in music printing and musical instrument design have had a profound effect on the evolution of the art form. Computers, MIDI synthesizers, CDROM, DVD, and the Internet are the latest in a long line of technological innovations that affect the way we make, learn, and teach music. The music technology component provides a structured sequence of "tools" courses for those students who desire to use new technologies to enhance their skills as performers, composers, teachers, and scholars. To accommodate this component as a supplement to existing undergraduate curricula, we offer a fifth-year option for all departments that elect to offer this component. Applicants to programs that include a technology component will be subject to the same audition and matriculation standards as all other students at our college. This program is designed to provide our students with skills in music technology. Students emerging with a Bachelor of Music degree face a world in which technology is present in every aspect of the music industry and every other industry. Students who lack skills in technology are at a competitive disadvantage when seeking meaningful employment in their disciplines. The Boyer College Teaching, Learning, and Technology Committee created the music technology component because former students informed us that these skills contributed to their success after graduation.

Burkhardt Office A327, Barton Hall: T, W, Th, F from 2:00-3:30 tel: 215 204-8633 email: tburk@temple.edu The course begins with a four-week introduction to the fundamental physics of sound waves. With this as a basis, we will then consider human hearing, musical scales and harmony, the production of sound by musical instruments, the human voice and speech sounds, architectural acoustics, and the electronic reproduction of sound. No mathematics beyond elementary arithmetic will be required. The textbook for the course is Musical Acoustics , 3d edition, by D. E. Hall. Several copies are on reserve in the Physics Library, Barton Hall, Room A209. To encourage regular studying and class attendance, there will be several short unannounced quizzes. The quiz questions will consider topics covered in the preceding 3 class meetings. The quizzes will contribute 5 % of the final grade. The remaining 95 % of the final grade will be based on two midterm exams (Mon. Oct. 7, Wed. Nov. 13) and a final exam (Mon. Dec. 16, 11:00 A.M.). The three exams will cover Chapters 1-5, 6-10, and 11-16 of the textbook, respectively. Each of the exams will contribute 31.7 % of the final grade.

Acoustics is broadly interdisciplinary, and as such it encourages interaction with
colleagues in many other disciplines, including mathematics, computer science,
electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, speech pathology, audiology, music,
linguistics, and languages. An acoustics program such as ours is almost unique in a
physics department because of its broad interdisciplinary nature. However, because
of its foundation in physics it can deal with a number of current research problems,
including analysis of complex continuous vibratory structures, acoustic radiation from
vibrating structures, nonlinear dynamics and simulation of physical systems in the production of music and speech.
Degree Programs
Facilities Degree Programs The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers three degrees which can involve a specialization in acoustics. The BS degree (Physics or Applied Physics, see the online catalog ) can culminate in a senior thesis or project, where the student works with a faculty advisor to research and report an independent investigation.
