Acupressure Like acupuncture, acupressure uses points on the meridians of the body to heal the body and relieve pain, but it's noninvasive. Where acupuncture uses needles, acupressure employs the pressure of fingers, thumbs and elbows, and sometimes even electrical currents. It releases tension in muscle fibers by applying focused pressure and releasing it, sending blood rushing back into the tissue. Acupressure also frees the blocked energy found at these points, promoting good general health. more: Reflexology Man or Woman? Frequency Shiatsu ... Introduction
Acupressure, acupuncture, and related practices Do-in, G-Jo, Shiatsu, and Myotherapy, practiced in Asia for thousands of years, have only gained wider acceptance in the West in recent times. Traditional Asian medicine emphasizes personal responsibility for one's health. This page is designed to put the relief of common and minor discomforts and symptoms into your own hands. By learning how to stimulate your own pressure points, you can relieve minor or moderate symptoms, and reduce the need for nonprescription drugs. Unlike most drugs, relief is usually immediate.
Warnings
Don't use acupressure to replace standard emergency procedures or licensed medical treatment. If you are seriously injured or have persistent symptoms seek urgent medical treatment (call 911 in the U.S.) Acupressure should not be used:
  • As the only treatment for illness; if you are sick, see a doctor
  • If you have a heart condition
  • Just before or within 20 minutes after heavy exercise, a large meal, or bathing

WHAT IS ACUPRESSURE? Excerpt from Acupressure's Potent Points
website www.acupressure.com Home The information on this website is not a substitute for diagnosis and treatment by a qualified, licensed professional. Article provided by: Acupressure Institute Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body's life force to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses the gentle but firm pressure of hands (and even feet). There is a massive amount of scientific data that demonstrates why and how acupuncture is effective. But acupressure, the older of the two traditions, was neglected after the Chinese developed more technological methods for stimulating points with needles and electricity. Acupressure, however, continues to be the most effective method for self-treatment of tension-related ailments by using the power and sensitivity of the human hand. Foremost among the advantages of acupressure's healing touch is that it is safe to do on yourself and others - even if you've never done it before - so long as you follow the instructions and pay attention to the cautions. There are no side effects from drugs, because there are no drugs. And the only equipment needed are your own two hands. You can practice acupressure therapy any time, anywhere.

acupressure An ancient Chinese technique, in which fingers apply gentle but deep pressure to specific points on the body to relieve pain and muscular tension. Like acupuncture (which uses thin needles instead of fingers), acupressure is believed to balance the natural flow of energy ( qi ) throughout the body by releasing blocked or congested energy centers. Pressure on a specific acupoint (also known as a trigger point) can bring relief, often in a nonadjacent area of the body.

In reflexology and acupressure, the fingers and thumbs are used to exert pressure on various parts of the body to relieve pain and promote healing. The main difference between the two is in theory and technique, but for all practical purposes they can be used together for back pain relief and associated anxiety and depression.
What Are They?
In reflexology pressure is applied with the fingers and thumbs to specific points on the feet, ears, or hands. These points correspond to different parts of the body such as the back, various muscle groups, and internal organs. The reflexology discussion will cover only points on the hands because you can easily and unobtrusively access these points in any setting. Acupressure is an ancient healing technique, in which finger or thumb pressure is placed on specific points on the body. Acupressure is similar in principle to acupuncture, in which needles are inserted. The main distinction between reflexology and acupressure is that in acupressure points

... Complementary Medicine Introduction Acupressure involves pressure points on the body with fingers or hands to alter the internal flow of a supposed vital force or energy called chi (pronounced "chee"), strengthening it, calming it or removing a blockage of the flow. Acupressure is one of a number of treatment methods regularly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, a system of healthcare that originated in China thousands of years ago, which is still widely practiced in Asian countries today. According to TCM, acupressure points are aligned along 14 body meridians, or pathways. Twelve of the meridians are bilateral, that is, identical versions of them (with the same sets of points) exist on both sides of the body. The other two are unilateral, running along the midline of the body. The 14 meridians do not correspond to any known physiological processes or anatomical structures in the body, such as nerves or blood vessels. Nevertheless, some well-controlled studies suggest that acupressure can be effective for a number of health problems, including nausea, pain and stroke-related weakness. A single point may be pressed for relief from a particular symptom or condition, or to promote overall well-being of the body. A series of points can be worked on in a specific order

Acupressure
Acupressure is the ancient Chinese healing art of using applied pressure on specific points on the body to relieve common ailments and discomfort. Acupressure is based on the same concept of meridians and acupoints as acupuncture, but fingertip pressure is used rather than needles. The aim is also the same, to balance the flow of energy or qi within the meridians, creating healthy functioning of the internal organs and preventing or curing disease. During treatment, the practitioner determines the correct points to use in relation to the ailment(s) and then places gentle pressure on the area(s) using the tips of the index or middle fingers, or the thumb, or the edge of the fingernail. The pressure must be even and is most often applied in the direction of the flow of the meridian. Small rotations may accompany the pressure and depending on the condition, the effects may be felt immediately (as in the case of blocked sinuses). Some conditions which acupressure can treat are:
  • Asthma Back Ache Constipation Fatigue Headaches

var MenuLinkedBy='AllWebMenus [2]', awmBN='456'; awmAltUrl=''; Complementary Healthcare Information Service - UK Acupressure Acupressure is the application of pressure to the body to affect the flow of energy (Ki) in the 12 meridians according to the principles of Oriental medicine. It is widely practised in China where more emphasis is given to a person’s responsibility for their own health than it is in the West, and is often used as a self-help treatment. Acupressure is believed to be the ‘mother of Acupuncture’ in that it predates the use of needles to stimulate the body’s energy flow. It has the same principles as Acupuncture, but the pressure is applied directly to the Acupoints of the body mainly by using the hands, fingers, thumb or knuckles and sometimes by using a smooth, blunt object. Stimulation of the body’s meridian system by touch is perhaps one of the oldest healing systems, and many other therapies use Acupressure techniques including Shen Tao, Jin Shen, Do Jin Shen, Qigong, Shiatsu and Tuina.
