Definitions Definitions of Learning Disabilities ... References Abstract Many people have difficulty comprehending that a child can be gifted and also have learning disabilities. As a result, children with special needs that result from both their high abilities and their learning problems are rarely identified and are often poorly served. This article explores the current policies and practices with regard to defining, identifying, and educating this population. Recommendations are included that would help ensure that students who are gifted and have learning disabilities receive the intervention needed to help them achieve their full potential. When educators first began describing children who showed evidence of having a learning disability (LD) yet also appeared to be gifted, many viewed this as contradictory. The stereotype that had prevailed since Terman's (1925) time was that gifted children score uniformly high on intelligence tests and perform well in school. How could a child be considered gifted who has serious enough learning problems to be characterized as having a learning disability? In recent years, the concept of giftedness and learning disabilities occurring concomitantly in the same individual has become commonly accepted. Several books have been written on the subject, numerous articles have appeared in journals, and most educational conferences focusing on either learning disabilities or giftedness include at least one presentation on the dual exceptionality. We appear to have reached an understanding that high ability and learning problems can both be present in the same individual. Nonetheless, empirical research on the characteristics and needs of this population has been limited, and relatively few students with LD who are gifted are identified as such or given special services. In this review, we examine some of the theoretical arguments, regulations, and educational practices that affect students with LD who are gifted.

Understanding Childhood Disorders Because of the seemingly carefree nature of their lives, children have been thought not to suffer from mental and emotional disorders. However, studies have indicated that children do, in fact, suffer from disorders typically thought to occur only in adults. Learning and conduct disorders, substance abuse, conditions such as autism and depression, and suicide are common in our young population. When children develop mental or emotional disorders, parents often blame themselves. But childhood disorders are likely caused by a combination of many factors. It is important to recognize the problem and seek treatment as soon as possible. Often these conditions can be treated effectively, allowing our children to grow into happy, productive adults. Types of Childhood Disorders Recognizing and understanding some of the disorders common in children is the first step. Mood Disorders Major depression, manic depressive disorder (also called bipolar disorder) and mania are disorders which cause change in a child's mood. Depression is considered to be the most common mental disorder. It is often mistaken for "the blues" and therefore goes untreated. Depression is caused by a number of factors, from chemical imbalances to environmental influences to genetics. Major depression causes people to feel hopeless, exhausted and useless. More than changes in mood, major depression can cause problems with sleep, appetite, self-esteem, daily activities and physical health.

Tips for the Teacher Consistency is the key to helping ADHD children. They are really poor at dealing with change, even if it is positive change. They need to have a sense of external structure, as they tend to lack a sense of internal structure. 2. ADHD kids have two kinds of time...plenty and none . They are usually poor at organizing their time and need you to help them break tasks down into small components. 3. Placing ADHD kids at the front of the room ( nearest the blackboard or where the teacher gives instruction ) is often helpful. If the child is right handed, placing them at the right front of the class minimizes the number of children they watch wiggle when they write. 4. Try to avoid placing ADHD children in loft classrooms or in situations with multiple children at a single desk. This maximizes their distractability. 5. Use colors and shapes to help them organize. 6. Try to provide a quiet study area, free from distraction , when seat work is required. 7. Try to work within the child's attention span . Keep changing the type of work frequently and the child can continue to work productively. Medication is NOT the only solution. 8.Remember
