Adult Education and Literacy
The National Adult Literacy Survey estimates that about 90 million adults in the United States may lack the literacy skills needed to succeed in the economy of the future. Adult education and literacy programs provide the literacy skills people need to obtain good jobs, play active roles in the education of their children, and carry out the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Assistant Secretary Carol D'Amico testified before the House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness, regarding the Administration's recommendations for the reauthorization of Adult Education and Literacy programs.

SML's adult education programs offer participants a chance to learn about marine topics in a relaxed and beautiful setting. Adult education programs have no prerequisites; however, because of course content and the rugged nature of Appledore's environment, enrollment is limited to adults and children 12 years of age or older. The total cost includes room, board, and all field trips, but does not include public ferry fares or transportation to and from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The public ferry fare must be paid directly to the Isles of Shoals Steamship Co. on the day of passage. All participants will travel aboard the afternoon ferry on the first and last day of each program. More information regarding parking, directions to Portsmouth, ferry schedules and accommodations in the seacoast area will be sent to you after your registration is received. There is clearly a need to increase the capacity, accessibility, and coordination of adult education programs within the State.

Adult Education Recognizing Excellence
Meeting the Need: Don't Reinvent the Wheel! There is clearly a need to increase the capacity, accessibility, and coordination of adult education programs within the State. Funding is not available to serve all adult learners in need or even all those who would avail themselves of services. Recognizing Excellence is cost effective because it connects adult education providers with practitioners of other effective adult education programs addressing similar needs. These promising practices and validated programs become resources from which you can choose to meet the needs of the adult learners in your community. The comprehensive identification and dissemination system of Recognizing Excellence facilitates access to quality adult education programs and practices throughout the State. With over 2 million New Yorkers in need of a literacy program, local adult education providers cannot meet all the needs on their own. Replicating programs eliminates "reinventing the wheel!" Evaluation Tier 1: Promising Practices A committee of practitioners designates practices/programs of merit that have been proven to be highly useful in meeting priority adult education requirements. Although not validated, the designation of promising practice ensures that knowledge, experience, and appropriate strategies have been utilized in the development of the program or practice. In addition to self-reported data, these programs must submit independent evidence of their program's effectiveness. Many of these programs are candidates for future validation.

Jews study. Through study we honor our past; we learn to deal with our present, and we pass on our heritage. At Beth Am we believe, as our sages from the earliest of times have taught, that study and education are central to the preservation of Judaism. The Talmud, after detailing a Jew's individual duties such as honoring parents among the mitzvot that are rewarded, concludes that the study of Torah is "equal to them all (Peah 1:1)." Beth Am has educational programs, sessions and meetings covering almost every aspect of Jewish life and learning. We study over lunch, over bagels, over coffee and over a stove. On Tisha b'Av and Yom Kippur we study without food. But, most of the time we nosh and study. We study in pairs, in groups and in classes. We even study while jogging with the Rabbi. Sometimes there's a slight charge for some of the courses at Beth Am because of the costs involved. Most of our classes are free. If money's a problem, call Rabbi Josh Zweiback - he'll work out something. Also call him if we missed a subject that you are interested in. He loves ideas for new classes.

http://www.ridoe.net/adulted_ged/programs.htm
Adult Education and GED
Adult Education Programs Adult Basic Education consists of learning experiences and supportive services that enable persons to acquire the basic skills and knowledge necessary to function as responsible and productive citizens. Adults are helped to achieve many objectives: personal, social, job and career development, preparation for family responsibilities, becoming a wiser consumer, and coping with an increasingly complex, crowded and rapidly changing world. In the 1999-2000 program year, the total number of Rhode Island adults who participated in Adult Basic Education program reached 4,261 persons. Many of these people improved their reading or math skills, completed studies, which prepared them for the high school equivalency examination or increased their ability to speak English. This learning is done in a friendly environment working with teachers who are sensitive to the needs of adults. A partial listing of programs being implemented for these services include: Cranston Adult Learning Center
