    Students majoring in mathematics may complete the requirements for either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree, with or without teaching certification. Any major requires 17 credit hours in core courses and 15 additional credit hours which vary with the student's program. See the degree plans below. The minor in mathematics without teaching certification requires at least 17 hours in mathematics courses. This must include Math 2471, 2472 and at least three courses in the 3000-5000 level other than 3315, 4302, 4304, 4311.     The Field
    Chemical Engineering deals with the invention, development, design, and operation of processes and devices for bringing about chemical and physical changes in materials. The chemical engineer is involved at all stages, bringing laboratory discoveries into new products and processes. Chemical engineers engage in fundamental research, development, economic and market analysis, design, construction, operations, supervision, sales, technical service, and management. Traditional industries such as petroleum refining and petrochemical production, plastics, synthetic fibers and textiles, pulp and paper, and pharmaceuticals employ many chemical engineers. The training of a B.S. chemical engineer provides a very broad background in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and their applications. This broad background enables chemical engineers to be employed in emerging technologies such as biochemical engineering and advanced materials.
    The Major
    Admission to the major is contingent upon completing the Engineering Freshman year with an average of C (2.0) with passing grades in the following courses: CHEM 111, CHEM 112, MATH 131, MATH 132, ENGIN 110 (or 111 or 112), PHYSIC 151 and PHYSIC 153. A student must maintain a cumulative average of C (2.0) in the core Chemical Engineering courses to remain in good standing, and to graduate.

    January 9, 1998, Baltimore, Maryland Good afternoon. It's a great honor to be here today and to address this gathering of distinguished mathematicians. As the Director of the National Security Agency I am aware of the extent to which our national security depends on the highly talented mathematicians that are trained and nurtured by those of you assembled here today. So as I begin my speech let me start by thanking each of you for your devotion to mathematics and teaching. Thank you for showing our young people how to do math research and how to apply this research to practical problems. I must admit that I have some mixed emotions about appearing before such a distinguished and learned audience. On the one hand, I'm very excited to have the opportunity to appear before such a group of intelligent and devoted scholars. On the other hand, I'm nervous about whether or not I will receive partial credit for today's speech, should I make a mistake. These different images make me think of the statistician who had one foot in a bucket of ice and the other in a campfire. When asked how he felt, this statistician replied "On the average, I'm comfortable." I cannot stress enough that now is a crucial time for our best and brightest minds to be involved in mathematics. The National Security Agency, as one of the largest employers of mathematicians, has a proud legacy of mathematical excellence. So, this afternoon I'd like to start by talking about several points of significance for the National Security Agency. First, I'd like to recount some of the historical achievements of our cryptologists and mathematicians. I'd also like to touch on the future technology environment of mathematics, and finally outline for you how we are lending our support to the math community. I think you will agree with me when I say that math and national security are a perfect match for the 21st century.

    This guide has been revised to reflect the addition of a new ECE Major to complement the prior EE Major and to incorporate ongoing curriculum updates.
    Check with your faculty advisor or with Dr.Ybarra, the departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies, if you have questions. Requirements for the new ECE major are described in this Guide. Requirements for the existing EE major are also described, in two groups: those that apply to classes graduating through 2005, and those that apply to classes graduating after 2005. Changes for EE majors graduating through 2005 are minimal, consisting mostly of clarifications to existing policies and practices. Beginning with the Summer 2002 semesters, the University Registrar has changed the letter designation on "EE" courses to "ECE" for example, the course EE 61L now appears on ACES and other listings as ECE 61L. This change corresponds to the change in department name made several years ago from "Electrical Engineering" to "Electrical and Computer Engineering". There are no associated changes in course names or course contents. The new course designations have been entered into the "typical programs" shown in this Guide. They do not affect the content of the EE and ECE major programs.

    Developed by TERC , with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Investigations in Number, Data, and Space purports to be " a complete K-5 mathematics curriculum that supports all students as they learn to think mathematically The NSF is now spending millions to promote implementation of the TERC program. School Boards find it difficult to say no. They rationalize: "it's just a different way to teach elementary math, and the NSF backs it, so how bad can it be?" This program is very bad because it omits standard computational methods, standard formulas, and standard terminology. TERC says this is now obsolete, due to the power of $5 calculators. They claim their program moves “ beyond arithmetic ” to offer " significant math ," including important ideas from probability, statistics, 3-D geometry, and number theory. But math is a vertically-structured knowledge domain. Learning more advanced math isn't possible without first mastering traditional pencil-and-paper arithmetic. This truth is clearly demonstrated by the shallow details of the TERC fifth grade program. Their most advanced "Investigations" offer probability without multiplying fractions, statistics without the arithmetic mean, 3-D geometry without formulas for volume, and number theory without prime numbers.

    General Information on CCM:
    For 30 years, computers have evolved along a sharply rising curve that has brought more than a doubling of computing power every decade. The last five years have seen an astonishing proliferation of new computer architectures that have gradually overcome the limitations of conventional computer designs. The coming years will certainly bring continued improvements in performance and changes in design as scientists and engineers meet the computational demands of the future. Created in the fall of 1992 to formalize the Computational Math Group that had been created in 1985, the Center for Computational Math (CCM) at CU-Denver is a broad-based response to the rapid and dramatic changes in the various fields of computation. The Center is an interdisciplinary inter-campus organization within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with associates at CU-Denver, on other campuses of the Rocky Mountain Region, and within the business and research community of greater Denver. The Department of Mathematics at CU-Denver, where the Center physically resides, is the most important partner of the Center, as many of CCM members are also faculty members of the Department of Mathematics, and as one of the major activities of the Center is training of high-level undergraduate and graduate students of the Department in computational mathematics.

    NOTES:

  • 1. This requirement could be met by three one-year courses in algebra, advanced algebra, and geometry or by a three-year integrated course sequence.
    One-year mathematics courses (e.g., algebra) taken over three or four semesters are acceptable to meet the "c - Mathematics" requirement, but credit will be granted for only one year (two semesters) of work.
    Although only three years are required, four years are strongly recommended. Among regularly admitted freshmen, most complete a mathematics course in each grade from 9th through 12th.

    Minor in Mathematics
    The Minor in Mathematics is designed to enable a student with a significant interest in Mathematics to deepen his/her knowledge while pursuing a concentration in another field. Note that LSA regulations preclude having both a major and a minor in the same field. While the concentration will often be in a field which makes significant use of mathematics, such as a science or a quantitative social science, it may be in any area of study. LSA regulations allow Advanced Placement credits and prerequisites for the concentration to count also as prerequisites for the minor. However, at most one course may be used to fulfill the requirements of both a concentration and a minor. Courses used to meet the requirements of a minor may not be taken pass/fail.
  • The prerequisite to a Minor in Mathematics is one of the sequences Math 115-116, 175-176, 185-186, or 295-296; or Math 156. These all provide a thorough grounding in the calculus of functions of one variable. Advanced Placement credits in Math 120 and 121 also fulfill the prerequisite requirement. The Minor consists of courses from the following two lists.
