Philosophy The middle school years are a time for exploration. As a student's self-image crystallizes, exposure to a variety of experiences promotes prudent risk-taking along a pathway to a positive self-image. The interscholastic sports program at VFMS emphasizes the values of participation, team play and sportsmanship. As one progresses through the middle school years, this emphasis is augmented with a process of skill development.
Academic Eligibility To be eligible for interscholastic athletic sports in grades 7 and 8, a student may not be failing more than one (1) major subject or more than three (3) special areas.

The Upper School at Bryn Mawr
The Upper School at Bryn Mawr offers students rigorous academic challenges and provides numerous opportunities for leadership, athletics, artistic expression, community service and fun. Bryn Mawr encourages participation in the life of the school, both inside and outside the classroom. In fact, with so many options, making choices becomes the biggest challenge of all.
Thanks to the coordinate program with Gilman School and Roland Park Country School, an unusually large number and variety of courses are available to students. Students may select from seven choices of languages and, in the senior year, 26 history electives, 12 science electives, 36 English electives and 28 electives in the arts.
Outside the classroom, school-wide activities are governed by the Student Government Association, the Arts Council, the Athletic Association and the Community Service Association, whose elected leaders work together to coordinate numerous activities sponsored by these groups. In addition, 26 clubs, ranging from the Chess Club, the Black Student Union, Students for Environmental Action, the Readers' Club, and Model Congress encourage students to explore a myriad of interests with students of similar inclination.
In activities, students may choose from numerous sports options throughout the year. There are 26 interscholastic sports teams that compete in either the fall, winter or spring seasons. For students who do not play on a team, there are 15 intramural offerings from which to choose, including weight training, yoga, aerobics, volleyball and running. We also offer non-athletic activities, such as a chamber group and tutoring at Roland Park Public School.

Physical education and individual team sports are a significant part of the RCDS program at all levels, and they play an important role in shaping the overall experience of an RCDS student. In the fall of 2000, the new 45,000 square-foot Nelson Athletic Center was completed. This new facility supports both the physical education and athletic programs by providing two basketball courts, four locker rooms, four squash courts, a 2,300 square-foot fitness center, and an athletic training room. Lower and Middle School Athletics
All students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 have physical education or team practice daily. In Lower and Middle School physical education, emphasis is placed on building physical skills, encouraging good sportsmanship, and learning and following rules and regulations in individual and team sports. The athletic program of the Middle School focuses on the development of team sports and on the individual and cooperative skills needed. Intramural in grades 5 and 6, the program shifts to interscholastic team sport emphasis in Grades 7 and 8, with physical education offerings also available. Sports, represented by separate girls' and boys' teams, include soccer, basketball, ice hockey, squash, tennis and lacrosse. Girls' field hockey and softball are offered, as well as boys' football, wrestling, and baseball. (Football and field hockey in Grades 5 and 6 are available on a limited interscholastic basis, also.) The opportunity for a team experience, and the chance to look ahead to sports in high school are positive elements of the RCDS interscholastic program at this level.

    http://www.andrews-school.org/athletics.html
Life at Andrews doesn't end with the school day. Opportunities to participate in athletic activities and personal fitness programs are an important part of learning self-reliance and confidence. Lessons learned on the athletic field and in the weight room are carried over into every other aspect of student life. We are proud of our strong tradition of athletic participation for our students. Our athletes participate in individual and team competition through our membership in the Private School League. Our athletic facilities include 6 practice fields, tennis courts, and new Field House that features a gym, 3 fitness rooms (aerobic, weight and cardio-fitness) and 2 locker rooms. Andrews' "no cut" policy promotes participation, making it possible for all interested students to be part of a team. There are sports for every season at Andrews and an activity for every ability. In addition, extracurricular options include equestrian sports, skiing, hiking and aerobics. Our coaches play a major role in the development of athletes in their charge. They help students develop leadership skills, promote teamwork and instill sportsmanship. These values apply not only to athletics, but to life.
