That is the question facing Myra Platt, director of Book-It's first African American production in their relatively brief history. The answer depends largely on the director's willingness and ability to submerge her self in "otherness." While an argument can be made for the universality of Maya Angelou's iconic coming-of-age narrative, at its heart I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings The experience of being black in America has resulted in the creation of a people who are as at ease listening to Busta Rhymes as they are watching Buster Keaton. It is precisely this sort of trans-cultural migration that is required of a white director staging the lives of black characters. To be successful at such an undertaking, a white director must first be willing to take a cultural leap of faith. They must be willing to try on the veil of blackness. That this is so rarely asked of the majority is shameful. That the task is fraught with complicated sociopolitical implications is clear. That Co-Artistic Director Myra Platt has opted to take it on is nothing less than admirable. This black woman applauds the effort.
