New Studies Show California's Class Size Reduction Program Makes a Difference in Student Achievement Davis Budget Adds CSR Funding, CTA President Johnson Notes Return to News Menu News Archive June 27, 2002 BURLINGAME - Three new studies - two about California's public schools - released this week show that class size reduction programs can make a major difference in student achievement and remain hugely popular with parents and teachers. The studies should make the California school districts now looking at dismantling class size reduction programs think twice, said Wayne Johnson, president of the 330,000-member California Teachers Association. "Teachers and parents know that smaller classes help improve student achievement," Johnson said. "These studies should make school districts fight for retaining their class size reduction programs - not hurry to kill them in the name of saving money." Johnson also noted that Gov. Davis' proposed state budget would bring $200 million in new federal funding for the state's program to reduce class sizes. CTA led a strong campaign that resulted in legislation in 1996 to limit class sizes to a maximum of 20 students in kindergarten through third grade - the largest such program in the nation. Johnson said CTA is pleased that a state-mandated study released today by a group of think tanks is recommending that the program continue in the state. But he rejected a recommendation by the Class Size Reduction Research Consortium that school districts be given the option of exceeding the 20-student cap because "once you do that, the whole program could unravel."

Stephen Perry B oth American studies and international studies have benefited immensely from having a multiplicity of resources and sites available on the Internet. Although these two fields are distinct in many obvious ways, they both share a robust interdisciplinary approach to their respective areas of inquiry in such fields as history, literature, folklore, politics, popular culture, economics, mass media analyses, among a host of other related topics. Both also share a constancy of academic discourse (grounded in similar theoretical approaches) which is why it makes sense (at least in Internet terms) to group them loosely together as being two sides of roughly the same coin. For researchers specifically interested in both American studies and international studies, these sites include anything from discussion groups to full-text speeches and documentsall seamlessly connected by a variety of hypertext links pointing to an abundance of even more relevant online resources. As a separate field, American studies emerged out of the historical crises of the 1930s and 1940s.

Home Student Work Uptown 2002 Uptown 2002 Pursuing the Latino Vote: A Special Report Rockefeller Drug Laws: A Non-Factor By John Romano The crowd of up to 80 people that gathered outside Gov. Pataki's New York City office at 40th Street and Third Avenue on Oct. 30th wanted one thing a repeal of the Rockefeller drug laws. After several speeches, a small group tried to enter Pataki's office. They were arrested. State Sens. David Paterson and Thomas Duane were among them. The event received little media attention and did not trigger a response from any of the three major candidates for governor as they made their final appeals to voters. Drug law reform was simply not a major political issue in the New York governor's race. "It's not a big issue between them because they [the candidates] haven't made it one," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac Polling Institute. The Rockefeller drug laws are named for the former New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller. In 1973 he pushed legislation through the Senate that called for strict penalties for drug selling and possession as a way to deter increasing drug use. Drug and prison reform advocacy groups argue that the drug laws are racist because many African-Americans and Latinos are sentenced to long prison terms for minor, nonviolent possession charges.
