ISHANGI'S presentation is a wonderful blend of music, dance, and narration. In the course of a concert, the audience will learn about authentic African customs, history, musical instruments, masquerades, and legends. The program entertains, but educates as well.
The objectives of the program are to introduce the student to the culture, dance, music, and history of West Africa, dispelling common held myths. The program incorporates everyday activities such as how clothing is washed by hand, beating the cloth on rocks, and how history is told using an ancient instrument. All dance and musical presentations are thoroughly explained.
The program also addresses the problems of today's youth, such as drug abuse and suicide. Baba Ishangi creates a rapport with the audience imparting words of wisdom. The students are encouraged to be the very best that they can be, and never to give up because, "although the night is long, the day is sure to follow." Folktale hour with musical accompaniment, African dance/music workshops, and lecture/demonstrations concentrating on African history or culture are available. African artifacts such as carvings, masks, textiles, household utensils, work tools, and musical instruments are available for mini museum display.

African Dance in the Diaspora
Date: Thu, 9 Jun 1994 17:45:36 -0700 (PDT) From: "Wendy E. Cochran" Subject: Re: Afro data base African Dances and Its Changes Overseas West Africa All of the dances that we chose to study tie in with this portion of our journey. The Goree Island, which is right off the shore of Senegal, was a holding place for the slaves, before they made their long journey to their final destinations. Woulousodong is a dance of the Wolorf people in Senegal. One of this dance's different interpretations, when learned in America, is that the movements represented those of the slaves while they walked up the gang plank. The African explanation tells us the movements signify adolescents breaking away from their parents' household and taking on new responsibilities. This is one instance where the interpretation of African dance has changed oversea. Haiti and Cuba Many of the slaves brought to Haiti and Cuba were Yoruba-speaking people. They worshipped more than 400 gods, which are still worshipped today. No doubt, they brought their religious practices with them. The main religion of the Spanish colonizers was Catholicism. It was taught to the Africans. This syncretism of religions resulted in Voodooism in Haiti, Santeria in Cuba and Condomble in Brazil. Haitian and Cuban dances show African origin not only in their religious foundations, but in their rhythmic movements and patterns. Brazil and Jamaica From the 15th century through the 18th century, about 3,000,000 Angolans were brought to Brazil to work on the different sugar, tobacco, cotton, and coffee plantations. The slaves brought with them many dances, including the Samba-de-Roda. This dance was originally from the Kimbundu tradition in Angola. When brought to Brazil, it took on many different forms, but it's African origins are still very distinct. Calypso is a social dance done at celebrations in Trinidad and Jamaica. The Calypso is very similar to the Brazilian Samba. Here, the relationship to African Diaspora dances is very clear.

The best part was taking them all through San Francisco to meet and study with their primary resource teachers while we went to Sacramento to compete. BIBLIOGRAPHY PRIMARY RESOURCES: INTERVIEWS: Christian, Winston. Telephone Interview. 11 February 1994. Mr. Christian helped us to enrich our knowledge of Jamaica and Trinidad. He spoke with us about the Maroon people of the Jamaican mountains and discussed the practice of Judaism amongst a lot of the Jamaicans. He shared resources in his personal library with us and recommended books for further research. Cochran, Wendy Ellen. Personal Interview. Continuos Instruction. Mrs. Cochran is our daily dance teacher at Gompers Secondary School. Mrs. Cochran has taught dance for 22 years and has trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York. She traveled to Tijuana and San Francisco to study with Cuban, Haitian, Senegalese and Brazilian dance masters to ensure accurate choreography for our project.. Diouf, Zak.
