M AXWELL Xolani Rani will be the first student in South Africa to graduate with a university degree in African Dance when he is capped this week. The 30-year old from Nyanga recently presented Trails , a contemporary African choreography, at the School of Dance’s annual showcase at the Baxter Theatre. Four years ago the School’s head, Professor Elizabeth Triegaardt, introduced African Dance to the suite of programmes offered. Rani says he is honoured to be a trailblazer. "African Dance will be a subject at schools after 2005, so we have a lot of work to do in training teachers who will be able to take the subject," he told Monday Paper Rani also believes his achievement will serve to inspire disadvantaged pupils. "We need to break these barriers," he said. "They should see African Dance as an option and a career choice."

Today's Weather Return to: * Monday Paper Index UCT home page African Dance makes its mark The School offers a BMus degree majoring in African Dance, as well as components of the BMus degree in African Dance and Music, run in co-operation with the College of Music. Two second-year students and 13 first-year students are currently studying African Dance. Open African Dance classes, which will be held in the evenings, are being planned as well. Vusi Ngema, who teaches African dance at the School, hails from KwaZulu-Natal, where he studied drama. His abiding interest in dance, and Zulu dance in particular, eventually led to his being invited to teach dance at the Jazzart Studio in Cape Town. He also taught dance at various Cape Town schools, part-time at the School of Dance, and was appointed as a full-time teacher in 1998. Ngema views dance not only as a form of self-expression, but also as a means to develop other skills. His commitment to development has led to the introduction of classes for 150 learners (who range in age from four to 21!) from Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Langa and Guguletu.

Fine Arts Events Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble Department of Dance Clyde Alafiju Morgan ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Khalid Saleem MUSIC DIRECTOR Sankofa is a symbolic, Ghanaian expression represented by a bird whose head turns back looking towards the past. The Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble retrieves the cultural essences of the past and brings them into the present. Sankofa presents dance and theater works expressing the dynamic presence of African culture in America. Some of the presentations are replicas of traditional African prototypes; and some of the works are re-creations, employing contemporary themes and movement motifs. The members of the African Dance and Drum Ensemble of SUNY Brockport represent the rich cultural heritage of Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Americas, and Africa that exists within our university community. The late Albert Opoku, the ensemble's first director, set the creative pace and artistic tone for the group of young artists who experienced and performed traditional Ghanaian dances. Authentic costumes, instruments and themes characterized the group at that time called Agoromma. An extensive variety of dances reached an audience hitherto unversed in the rich language of the West-African culture. This produced a generation of students infused with a newly found respect and inspiration for African dance. Upon retirement in 1985, Opoku returned to his homeland and Agoromma was transformed first into Kuam Ka Fafa and then into Sankofa under the guidance of its present artistic director, Clyde Alafiju Morgan. Khalid Abdul N'Fally Saleem joined the ensemble as music director in 1994 when he became a member of the SUNY Brockport faculty.
