The film introduces eight modern dance companies from Africa, Europe, and Canada that participated in the Festival International de Nouvelle Danse in Montreal, Canada in 1999. Through insightful interviews and outstanding performances, the film depicts a fascinating diversity of themes in contemporary African dance – interactions between tradition and modernism, consequences of colonization and urbanization, women’s self-expression, masculinity, and family relationships. The film is a unique source of inspiration for audiences of all ages and specifically dancers, choreographers, dance historians, critics, and all those interested in African culture. The dance floor was crowded with young men and women gyrating to various tunes tocare, though, enjoying the moment, dancing away in typical African style.

A time to remember?
Sensuality African Style

The day had been hot and long in the heat of the desert like country of Southern Sudan and w e were heading back home from a small community for what Life magazine had called the "Lost boys of Sudan." It had been joyous but strenuous work, enduring the heat of the sun, with not much shade around. The Land Rover was laboring over another huge rut on the so-called road as Akot my Sudanese escort from the SPLA spoke and said "tonight we will have to celebrate and have dinner at the Lynx. It will be fun, there is music and a disco there also, and lots of beer." The sound, or rather thought of a cold Tusker’s Beer sounded so inviting. The idea of sitting at a table enjoying some food and discuss the day with my friend was appealing. For a moment I thought of the bulletin I had read declaring the Lynx off-limits to UN associated personnel, but then I loved adventure and had always dared to go where no white man dares to go. After a nice shower pouring from a make shift 50-gallon oil drum suspended from a platform, heated by the sun, we went to our dinner restaurant? Night had fallen quickly, as it does around 7 PM in Africa and we stumbled across open fields, trying to avoid the thorn-bushes that were so abundant there.

His/her occupation, his successes, his/her social position in life, and how he/she died is reflected in the music and dance. The funeral dances express the importance fo the community in traditional African life, in which people are bound by a shared respect for their heritage and a pride in the accomplishments of their fellowmembers. Brenda Matthews, who uses her career as an artistic outlet, focuses on producing life-changing effects through her special poetry performances. She travels to different communities around the country that have been assaulted by drugs, alcohol and poverty and through her art of poetry and expression, aims to leave her audience with a new outlook.
Winner of the 1999 Multi-State Poetry Slam in Philadelphia, Chicago native Avery R. Young started in 1996 with a performance group called Innervisions. Since then, he has performed at many different venues internationally. He has appeared with many well-known artists and poets like Roy Ayers and Gwendolyn Brooks.
Not only a poet, Maria McCray has many talents such as acting, directing, teaching and mothering. Her poetry takes her to the national poetry slam competition each year where she is the Chicago representative. This year, she will compete individually for the first time.
Each year, Dance Africa Chicago brings an array of performers who unveil the artistry and tribal celebration of the African Diaspora. There are three performance groups this year that will guide the celebration of dance. The Sankofa Dance Theater, founded in 1989 in Baltimore, will contribute to the performance with an exciting array of tribal costumes and the orchestration of sounds and dance. The performers use the tradition of drums, dance, songs and stories to bring the audience back home to Africa.

Students can dance their way Into African Nite '95, Saturday at 9:30 p.m. in the Union Station. The African Student Union is sponsoring its first dance of the semester, said Sydney Lisk-Anani, graduate student in regional and community planning and president of the African Student Union. "We want to have this dance, so that people can learn about our culture through music," Lisk-Anani said, "because many Americans think that African music is only about drumming." Nyambe Harleston, senior in monetary policy and banking and treasurer of the International Coordinating Council for international organizations, said ICC helps sponsor activities for international students because the group tries to inform people about the different cultures on campus and the community. "We think that this a good way to show not only K-State, but the Manhattan community that there are different kinds of rich cultures that exist in Manhattan," Harleston said. She also said few Americans know what is going on in other cultures. "Many Americans don't know what's happening outside of the United States," Harleston said. "This is our way of bringing other cultures to them."
