Associated Zoo Organisations THE AFRICAN PRESERVATION PROGRAMME (APP) One of the largest and most ambitious of all PAAZAB's ongoing projects is the African Preservation Programme, more familiarly known by its abbreviation; the APP. Like the Species Survival Program (SSP) of the American Zoo Association, and the Australasian Species Management Plant (ASAMP) and the Endangered Species Programme (EEP) of the European Zoo Association, the APP is essentially a cooperative conservation breeding programme actioned by the membership of PAAZAB. It is generally accepted that zoos seek to provide support to the survival of species in the natural state through the maintenance of those species in captivity as "insurance" or "backup" populations. To effect this in a meaningful fashion however, it is necessary for zoos to maintain genetically and demographically viable populations of such species. Sadly, it is usually far beyond the resources of any single zoo to maintain the large groups of any single species to provide for such populational viability requirements. On the other hand, if zoos act in concert, pooling their individuals of a species in a cooperative programme whereby all those individuals are part of a greater, managed population, it becomes easier to fulfill these requirements. This is where coordinate conservation management efforts like the APP come in.

Yerkes chimpanzees `return' to Africa in unprecedented loan The first loan of chimpanzees from the United States to an African zoological park occurred this month, when the Yerkes Primate Research Center transferred 10 of its chimpanzees to the East London Zoo in South Africa. "We are excited that the Yerkes Center can offer this unprecedented loan that will add another bond between the `new' South Africa, Emory University and the Atlanta community," said Thomas Insel, director of Yerkes, which has more than 200 chimpanzees in addition to almost 3,000 rhesus monkeys and other primates. Although chimpanzees are not among the wildlife native to South Africa, the loan of chimpanzees to that country's East London Zoo is regarded as a repatriation of sorts of these animals to their home continent, said Insel. In Eastern Africa, wild populations of chimpanzees are found in Tanzania, Zaire, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and the Sudan, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Archives The conservation of monkeys on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea by Dr Gail Hearn Beaver College/Arcadia University, USA Bioko Island, the largest of the Gulf of Guinea Islands, has a surprising variety of native monkeys: four species of guenons ("cercopithecine monkeys"), two species of colobus, and the drill, a large baboon-like monkey that is now considered to be the most endangered primate in all of Africa. Until recently, the island's steep, volcanic terrain, high rainfall and low human population have combined to protect these monkeys and their undisturbed forest habitat from many of the conditions that now threaten wildlife in other African forests. In the last fifteen years, Bioko Island, like much of the rest of West and Central Africa, has developed an unsustainable commercial bushmeat trade, where forest animals are hunted to be sold as a delicacy in city markets. On Bioko Island, which has plentiful supplies of fish and domestic poultry, the bushmeat -including all seven of the island's monkey species - is strictly a luxury food item. It costs more than fresh beef, the most expensive domestic source of protein. The development of oil fields off shore from Bioko has brought new prosperity to the people of Bioko, and has intensified the commercial hunting. Since 1990, Dr. Gail Hearn of Beaver College/Arcadia University (located near Philadelphia in the United States) has been monitoring the monkey populations in the most remote part of the island, the Gran Caldera de Luba, a volcanic crater on the southwestern coast. All seven species of monkeys are found in the Gran Caldera. In 1996, to encourage conservation of the monkeys, Beaver College established the Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program, which is dedicated to studying and protecting the wildlife in the two legally protected areas of the island: Gran Caldera/Southern Highlands and Pico Basile. These two areas make up more than 45% of the island, and remain, except for the bushmeat hunting, almost undisturbed by human activities.

Despite encouragement the zoo's two adult gorillas, Max and Lisa, have not produced any offspring. The gorillas, both aged 30, do not have a particularly close relationship; add to this Max's low sperm count and the fact that gorilla babies are born only once every three to four years and the chances of adding to the zoo's gorilla population have been slim. The zoo has tried artificial insemination once before but the attempt was unsuccessful. According to the curator of primates, Philip Cronje, insemination is not an exact science. Gorillas must be inseminated when they are ovulating, and because there are other variables there is no certainty of success.

Steves Menagerie This is a White Lion ...When the children cry...La Da Da..... Oh. Hey. Do you remember that tune? It was by the late-80's hairspray-metal band "White Lion". Not a bad tune for the genre I guess....They also did "Wait"....I had the tape. (Embarrassing, but true.) At the time they were making music, I didn't realize that there really WERE white lions. I guess I knew that albinism can happen in almost any species from time to time, and melanism is especially common in some big cats...(black leopards....etc.) ...but lions are just so... tan. There is only one example of a melanistic lion that I have ever read about. This was a report of a very big Persian lion that was seen by the archaeologist Sir Henry Layard which was described as being " very dark brown in colour, in parts almost black. " There are, of course, no lions at all left in Persia today...much less big black ones. An albino lion cub was born recently in the Lujan Zoo in Buenos Aires. In his book, "Wild Cats of the World", C.A.W. Guggisberg makes mention of a couple of albino cubs born in Kruger National Park in 1960, and one of these albinos was apparently still alive in 1977, when it was mentioned in the preface to the book "The White Lions of Timbavati"... which brings us to the beginning of our story Even though the cubs were snow-white... they WEREN'T albinos. They had normal yellowish-brown eyes instead of the pink eyes that an albino would have. The white color is caused by a recessive gene, much like the white tigers of India.

Public Education in USA Bushmeat Education Working Group Discussion Summary The bushmeat trade in Africa is an issue that strikes members of the public in North America very deeply for a variety of reasons. BCTF has received numerous requests for information from the public and from its member institutions for materials that could be used to educate the general public about this critical wildlife and human issue affecting most of Africa today. Visitors to North American zoos number more than 140 million each year. Bringing the bushmeat issue to this audience can lead to the effective education of more than half of the US population. With the endorsement of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association's Conservation Education Committee (AZA-CEC), BCTF is working to develop a coordinated multi-media set of materials to be used by BCTF Supporting Members and AZA institutions to reach out to the North American public on this issue. In addition, AZA-CEC has a strong interest in strengthening educational efforts on the ground in Africa. A consultant should be hired to conduct a review of current educational efforts in North American zoos, and to provide feedback and recommendations on an effective approach to this audience.

(8 December, 1998) Magistrate partially revokes order after agreement is reached on conditions for relocation of animals. The Brits Magistrate's Court ruled yesterday that seven of the 30 juvenile elephants which were allegedly ill-treated on a plot outside Brits could be exported to overseas zoos. Magistrate Herman Glas partially revoked an order he made last week giving custody of the animals to the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "The order I made last week is revoked in regard to these seven elephants," he said. Glas made the ruling after an agreement was reached between lawyers for the NSPCA and for the elephants' owner, African Game Services boss Riccardo Ghiazza. The two parties agreed that the export would take place no later than December 16 and that two NSPCA officials would be allowed to examine the animals before they are moved. Other conditions include that African Game Services must obtain medical certificates for the elephants from the state veterinarian and the NCSPCA officials will be allowed to monitor their relocation. The recipient zoos must be told by the company that the elephants may have future behavioral problems because of the alleged abuse, and must acknowledge in writing that they were aware of the court proceedings. Erfurt Zoo and Dresden Zoo, both in Germany, are to get two elephants each, and the other three are headed for a zoo in Basel, Switzerland.
