The African elephants are living in the savannah, dense scrub, and forest area of central, southern, and eastern Africa("Endangerd Species"). Male elephants stand average of 10 feet tall at shoulder and weigh is as much as 12000 pounds. These are amazing. Female elephants are pretty shorter than male elephants and weight is about 8000 pounds. Both male and female elephants grow tusks and have huge floppy ears, which could cover their shoulders and smooth forehead. In addition, there were approximately 1.5 million in1978 but today there are about 600000 African elephants remaining in the wild (Michaels). One reason for decreasing number is that human is poaching or illegal killing to steal ivory and illegal trade. Some scientists have been finding conservation programs, but they think it is very difficult to take care of them because they are very huge for us, so that is risky ("Endangered Species"). On the other hand, Asian elephants have some difference characters. They have smaller tusks, ears and two humps on the forehead(Endangered Species"). Male elephants stand average of 9 to 10 ½ feet tall and weight is about 8000 pounds. Only male grows tusks which is different from African. Female elephants are pretty shorter than male and weight is about 6000 pounds("endangered species") They are living in the forests and jungles of India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Burma, Malaysia, China and Southeast Asia. There are approximately 29000 to 40000 Asian elephants remaining in the wild (Michaels). Recently, Asian elephants decreased numbers to 34000 to 51000 in the wild because so many forests were lost from the wild. Also, they are less than one tenth of estimated total of African elephants (Kemf 1994)

San Diego County San Diego San Diego Zoo Zoo stories Israeli and local teens spend the night Among San Diego's bat and giraffes San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, Aug. 3, 2001 By AJ Lawrence San Diego, CA (special) A group of American and Israeli teenagers associated with the Jerusalem Zoo camped overnight at the San Diego Zoo last week to learn about African animals. In the process, they also learned quite a bit about each other. I was privileged to join them. The Israeli and San Diego teens have volunteered as guides and helpers in various parts of the Jerusalem Zoo . As part of an exchange program underwritten by San Diegan Ellen Barnett, the teenagers rendezvoused in San Diego to see what it's like at the larger and more famous San Diego Zoo. Camping overnight was one of the activities in a weeklong program that also included an in-depth look at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, as well as visits to other tourist attractions including Sea World. The overnight camping trip was designed to teach not only about the animals of Africa, but also about its peoples, plant life and customs, according to Laurie Furry, an education specialist at the San Diego Zoo. The first adventure on the behind-the-scenes tour was the "Dr. Doolittle" comedy show performed by Michael Wulfhart, a South African entertainer and educator who wore a 19th century safari hat covered in long exotic bird feathers. He shared such interesting facts as the sweat of a hippopotamus is red.
