Thank You Letters

The Alabama Association of School Boards welcomes you to its website! AASB is the official voice of the state's local school boards and other boards governing K-12 public education agencies. We are dedicated to improving educational opportunities for all Alabama public school students through the improvement of local lay education governance.
By pooling resources through its membership, AASB provides services which one school board could not economically provide alone. Boardmanship skills training, risk management programs and practical publications are among the many services provided to AASB members. In addition, AASB represents the interests of its members before the state Legislature, state Board of Education and other state and national agencies. We're pleased to add another dimension to our services with this website. Alabama Association of School Boards P.O. Drawer 230488

Text Only Version Alabama Professional Education Personnel Evaluation Program This website contains manuals, forms, surveys, professional development modules, and other materials used in the Alabama PEPE program. Recent Postings The Alabama Professional Education Personnel Evaluation (PEPE) Program addresses the resolution adopted by the State Board of Education in July, 1988 establishing policies and procedures requiring the development of a professional education personnel evaluation system in each local school system. However, in the event that any local board of education does not develop such an evaluation system, it is required to use the evaluation system developed by the State Department of Education. The research-based criteria used in the evaluation of professional education personnel were developed by a task force who represented superintendents; supervisors; elementary, middle, and secondary principals and teachers; business/industry; parents; school boards; higher education; specialty areas; and professional organizations and associations.

    1. Statewide content and student performance standards. Content standards and student performance standards have been developed for each major discipline of instruction offered in Alabama's public schools. State courses of study define for each grade level of the elementary and secondary school the minimum required subject-area content in terms of what students should know and be able to do at the end of a grade level or course. Courses of study have been developed for arts education, career/technical education, computer applications, driver education, English language arts, foreign languages, health education, mathematics, physical education, science, and social studies. The courses of study are revised periodically to reflect a six-year schedule.

    Current Law, Jan. 1997 Overview
The Alabama Commission on Higher Education was created by the Legislature in 1969 to coordinate public higher education in Alabama. The Commission is comprised of 12 members: 10 appointed by the Governor, one by the Speaker of the House and one by the Lieutenant Governor. Commissioners are subject to Senate confirmation. They serve staggered nine-year terms without compensation. In addition to the Commission, higher education governance in Alabama is made up of several boards. Two multi-campus governing boards were established by the constitution for the three University of Alabama campuses and the two Auburn University campuses. One board of trustees governs the three Troy State University campuses, while the seven other state universities have separate governing boards. Athens State College and the public two-year sector are governed by the State Board of Education. What the Commission Can Do
    • The Commission approves new units of instruction. This includes new institutions, mergers, branch campuses, colleges, schools, divisions and departments.
