The schools are located on an 157-acre campus approximately two miles west of downtown Elba on Highway 166. All school activities and physical plants are located on this campus. The Elba City Schools have honor programs, many extra-curricular activities for boys and girls, vocational programs and are rated in the top 25% of state schools. Elba City Schools experience very low incident of serious behavioral problems. Incident reports show that problems relating to drugs, weapons and violence among our students are at a very low level. A very successful Drug Awareness/Resistance Education (DARE) program has a very positive effect on helping students "say no" to drugs. Strong, fair and compassionate discipline is practiced at both schools and the results are seen in low incidence of these behavioral problems. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the progress of school library media specialists in the area of technology knowledge and skills as outlined by the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T). Online resources and activities were developed that would assure that graduates of the library media technology program were prepared to integrate and model technology skills, especially in the area of information and communications technologies. The primary role of the school library media specialist is to assure that his or her clients, i.e., students, faculty and staff, are information literate. The relationship between information
literacy and technology is compelling.

When you are in the small town of Talladega, Alabama, stop by and visit the historic (since 1858) Alabama School for the Deaf on the campus of the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB). The Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) began in 1858, inspired by the deaf brother of the school's founder, Joseph Henry Johnson. Over the course of its history, it had to become self-sufficient during Depression years, and expanded to include a school for the deafblind. Deafblind students are served by the Helen Keller School of Alabama, on the same campus. Deafblind students and other students at AIDB can enjoy playing in the Hackney Play Therapy Center, a play area very similar to commercial indoor play centers. Students at HKS have very small classes, and all sorts of opportunities to build their independence skills and confidence, particularly horseback riding.

Grants awarded to implement inner-city asthma intervention The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today the awarding of grant funds 23 sites to improve the health of inner-city children with asthma. This is a $2.9 million project. These funds will enable community-based health organizations throughout the United States to implement a scientifically proven asthma intervention program. This asthma intervention program is based on the National Cooperative Inner-City Asthma Study (NCICAS), which was supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). NCICAS is the largest asthma study of children ever completed in the inner-city. "Asthma is a major public health problem that has been increasing over several decades," said Richard Jackson, MD, director of CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH). "We have an urgent need to take action and begin to implement the best methods available based on sound research to control and prevent it."

Dothan, known as the Peanut Center of the World, appreciates the peanut. It's the area's leading cash crop. Visitor's can examine this giant peanut at the Dothan Area Convention Center and Visitor's Bureau. CITY STATS Dothan is located in the Southeast corner of Alabama (also known as LA, Lower Alabama to some of you cyber fiends) just approximately 20 miles North of the Florida state line and approximately 20 miles East of the Georgia line, which gives it the "Tri-State" nickname. Dothan has been home to many nicknames throughout the years; "Peanut Capital of the World", home to the National Peanut Festival which is held every fall, and "Circle City" which comes from the ever-famous Ross Clark Circle. Houston County covers 580.4 square miles with many amenities for families and retired families of all ages. Dothan was rated 24th in 1998 as the best place to live in it's size category. The population of Dothan is approximately 57,737. Dothan and the Wiregrass area loves to be known for it's Southern Hospitality, but hates the stigma that it's just a poor country town when, in fact, it's a very prosperous area. Dothan is home to many large industries such as Ansell Corporation, Avery Jet, Collins Signs, Dunbarton, GE Motors, Globe Motors, McLane Distribution, Sony, and Twitchell, just to name a few.
