By Shelley Gill lustrated by Shannon Cartwright Review by: Deborah Beebe Ms. Gill opens the doors to a child's imagination through her magical view of the wonder and awe of the backwoods of Alaska detailed in nursery rhyme. From the snow goose to the tufted puffin and the marmot and caribou; Ms. Gill weaves a song of Alaskan nature in harmony with the magnificent creatures that call the land of the midnight sun their home. Through prose we discover a crane's ballet, the dense fur of the musk ox, the footing on granite of the white dall sheep and the arctic playground of the walrus and whale.  The black bear enjoys a favorite treat that happens to turn his teeth a most beautiful shade of blue!

THREE NEW GRANTS HOLD OPPORTUNITIES IN ALASKA
January 22, 2000 Three new grants from the U.S. Department of Education may hold ancillary benefits for Alaska special education students and teachers. As state and federal agencies continue to encourage school systems and teachers around the country to think creatively when searching for funding for various programs, the loosely worded application requirements for new fiscal year 2000 Alaska Native Education programs appear to fit that creativity bill. The Department of Education has up to $11 million to disburse for programs that will help Alaska Natives, with individual grants ranging from $50,000 to $750,000 per year.

Alaska!
Sometimes referred to as the Last Frontier, Alaska gets its name from its earliest native peoples; the Aleuts called their land alayeksa , which means "great land." The Great Land is noted for its wealth of natural resources. For hundreds of years, adventuresome people have traveled to Alaska in search of furs, gold, and most recently oil. Today, one of Alaska's largest industries is tourism. Each year, thousands of visitors travel to Alaska to learn about its history and explore its natural beauty.
  • Iditarod: The Last Great Race
Alaska's annual Iditarod Dogsled Race is a perfectly "teachable moment." Wise teachers use the race and the many Web sites connected with it to teach geography, math, reading, and language arts. More than that, this annual race can teach students a thing or two about fairness in competition and about the pride and dignity that comes with seeing a job through to its completion. Included are Iditarod activities for use across the grades!
  • Happy Birthday, Alaska!

WHAT IS PROJECT LEARNING TREE?
Project Learning Tree (PLT)
is an award-winning environmental education program designed for and by educators working with students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The program uses the forest as a "window" on the natural world, helping to focus awareness and knowledge of all aspects of the environment, and our place within it. PLT helps prepare students to make informed decisions about conservation practices and natural resource use by practicing problem solving and critical thinking skills. CURRICULUM MATERIALS
PreK-8 Activity Guide

  • contains 96 lessons with variations and extensions organized into storylines within thematic chapters includes background material and directions for teachers contains suggestions for subject integration and assessment
Spanish Translation of the PreK-8 Student Pages
