Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is the home of Alligators
Scientific Name: Alligator mississippiensis Also commonly known as: Mississippi alligator, Pike-headed alligator, "gator". Photos Below, Click Here. Alligators are found throughout the entire Southeastern United States including; Alabama, Arkansas, N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. They usually occupy freshwater swamps and marshes but are also found in rivers, lakes and smaller bodies of water. Occasionally found in brackish water around mangrove swamps, alligators can tolerate a reasonable degree of salinity though the lack the buccal salt-secreting glands present in crocodiles. It was once common to see male alligators 5 to 6 meters in length, however, today it is rate to see on over 4.5 meters. Females are much smaller reaching an average length of only 3 meters. The alligator snout is broad with the edge of the upper jaw overlapping the teeth of the lower jaw. The juveniles are miniature versions of their parents having what is known as disruptive camouflage. They have bright yellow bands across a black background. As juveniles get older their black and yellow coloring fades to brown and green. Their eyes are silvery in color. Adults generally take one of two forms: long and thin or short and stocky. Alligator populations were dwindling up until the legal protection of the 1960's. Their belly skin produces a high quality leather, this led to increased hunting pressures early in the century especially in Louisiana and Florida. The species has recovered well thanks to properly controlled conservation and sustainable use programs. The populations have improved considerably and are now only considered to be threatened in some states by habitat destruction.

Crocodiles and Alligators, with an evolutionary history spanning 200 million years, are the last remnants of the great age of reptiles. Contemporaries of the dinosaurs, crocodiles and alligators are mentioned in the writings of Pliny and Aristotle, and figure prominently in tribal legends and in early accounts of exploration. Yet even today new information is coming to light on the evolution, biology, and natural history of these mighty creatures. Living crocodilians range from the infamous "man-eating" giant crocodiles of the Pacific and Africa to the innocuous forest-dwelling dwarf caimans of South America and the Dwarf crocodile of Africa. Myths, misconceptions, and marketability have distorted their relationship with humans, millions of whom share their habitat in the world's tropical and subtropical regions. In trying to answer the many questions about how these reptiles live, breed, socialise, and interact with other species this book draws on the expertise and recent research of scientists from ten countries. Their informative and up-to-date text is illustrated by some of the world's best wildlife photographers, magnificent original illustrations of each species, maps, and diagrams.

Active during warmer months, alligators may stay secluded underwater orin shoreline dens during colder months. alligators bellow, loudly!

Crocodilians Photos on this page courtesy of SFWMD
Crocodilians (order Crocodilia ) comprise two families: Alligatoridae and Crocodylidae . Caimans belong to the former. PROTECTED
The American Alligator Alligator mississippiensis , is found in freshwater throughout the state. It has a large (10-19') black body with a broad, rounded snout and lives an average of 40 years. The American Alligator is the official state reptile and the mascot of the University of Florida. It has excellent eyesight even at night. Its jaws hold 70-80 pointed teeth. If a tooth is lost, a new one grows in its place. It feeds on fish, turtles, water birds, snakes, frogs, and small mammals. The alligator swims by tucking its legs against its body and sweeping its tail from side to side. It is capable of sudden bursts of speed in the water and on land. Active during warmer months, alligators may stay secluded underwater or in shoreline dens during colder months. If resting, they can stay underwater for an hour or even several hours. They tend to wander during droughts and mating season. Scan the surface of a lake at night with a strong flashlight. A red glow is the light reflected from an alligator's eyes. A green or yellow glow indicates a frog or water spider.
