GENRES: Information System on Genetic Resources
Summary: The GENRES: Information System on Genetic Resources "...provides information about national, european and international activities on conservation and sustainable utilization of genetic resources for food, agriculture and forestry." It "...refers... to passport, identification and evaluation data as well as to information about taxonomy, utilization and endangering of different species. Furthermore data about institutions, literature, projects and other services are available." It "... connects the centralized meta, factual and evaluated data on genetic resources in Germany at the IGR [Information Center for Genetic Resources] with the decentralized data existing in institutions which are involved in GENRES." The database's subject index features six categories: (1) plant genetic resources; (2) forest genetic resources; (3) animal genetic resources; (4) microbial genetic resources; (5) biological diversity; and (6) news. Users select any of the first four categories to activate the search. The screen then displays listings showing resource information available in three locations: Germany, other nations, and international networks. Users who choose to view resources within Germany should know that texts will be displayed only in German. Upon viewing a region's resource listings, users need only to select a category of interest to display the contents.

Wallace Institute for Alternative Agriculture publishes the American Journal of Alternative Agriculture , a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal of research on alternative agriculture. It is a scientific forum for disseminating technical, economic, and social research findings about the character and requirements of alternative agriculture systems. The current double issue (Volume 11, Numbers 2 and 3) features the 13 papers presented by U.S. scientists at a U.S.- Middle East Conference and Workshop on "Dryland Farming Systems and Technologies for a More Sustainable Agriculture," held in October, 1993, in Moscow, Idaho. That landmark conference was conducted under the auspices of the Multilateral Working Group on Economic Development of the Middle East Peace Process, and was attended by approximately 50 scientists from the United States, Russia, Egypt, Israel, Tunisia, Turkey, Jordan, Oman, and the emerging Palestine State. Topics of the papers include farming systems and conservation needs in the Northwest Wheat Region; water conservation practices for sustainable dryland farming systems in the Pacific Northwest; agricultural wind erosion and air quality impacts; advances in the production of cool season food legumes; diversification for new management systems opportunities in the Pacific Northwest; and crop traits for water stress tolerance.

Agriculture and Alternative Agriculture and
Value Added Agriculture Link Deposit Loan Program
The Program:
One of the largest link-deposit loan programs in the nation, the Agriculture and Alternative Loan Program and the Value Added Agriculture Loan Program is available to farmers statewide through over 1000 financial institutions, and to date has helped more than 10,000 farmers across Illinois. The program currently has committed over $1 billion in state funds toward the agriculture community. Agriculture is a major component of Illinois' economy and lending operational and long term money at a rate that is attractive to both agriculture lenders and farmers assists in keeping the agriculture backbone of Illinois strong. A borrower may receive these loans by completing a simple application form with his/her financial institution and certify that he/she will be using the funds for goods and services related to the production of agriculture products and alternative agriculture products. Alternative agriculture products may include items such as grapes, strawberries, hydroponically grown food, Christmas trees and/or activities such as fish farming (aquaculture) and winemaking. Program loans are made for one year for the Annual Operating Loan Program

The Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) is one of several Information Centers at the National Agricultural Library that provide in-depth coverage of specific subject areas relating to the food and agricultural sciences. AFSIC focuses on alternative farming systems that aim at maintaining agricultural productivity and profitability, while protecting natural resources. Such systems include sustainable, low-input, regenerative, biodynamic, and organic farming and gardening. Support for the Center comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program and a cooperative agreement with the University of Maryland, College Park.
