For the past one hundred years, docents in American museums have been a living link between museum collections and the public. Docents lead visitors toward a deeper understanding of museum artifacts and the history, people, and stories behind them. If you are interested in joining this dynamic, motivated group and providing an indispensable service to thousands of visitors as a Museum docent, we welcome your application. In the "Ceremonial Court" exhibition, a docent fills in visitors on some of the White House escapades of President Theodore Roosevelt's children. A docent at one of the interpretive carts explains how a Victrola works. In the Museum's two popular learning centers, docents encourage people of all ages to explore history with their hands and minds. Visitors to the Hands On History Room can assemble a Chippendale chair, operate a telegraph, uncover the story behind the imagery in a buffalo-hide painting, and participate in more than thirty other activities. Removing DNA from cells, testing for food additives, and measuring radioactive hot spots are just a few of the activities that docents facilitate in the Hands On Science Center. Q UALIFICATIONS The Museum's Docent Program is open to men and women twenty-one years of age or older who can communicate with the general public, successfully complete required training, and commit one day per week for the weekday program or two days per month for the weekend program. For weekday docents, core training requires two days per week for six weeks. Weekend docents meet on consecutive Saturdays and some Wednesday evenings. All core training sessions are in the fall. Training sessions are mandatory. Applicants are considered docent-candidates until they successfully complete training.
