The Lehigh Valley’s Role in American History By
Ruth Kordwitz
If nature’s bounty exists in abundance anywhere, it certainly has firmly rooted itself in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. The soft rolling hills, lush green valley and fertile farmlands lie within a quick hour north of Philadelphia. To the weary big city dweller, or the cross-country traveler, this region is a paradox of time and scenery. In the summer, you may cool yourself in the breezes of a lazy canoe ride down the Lehigh Canal. In the fall, you might find yourself wandering happily through a giant maze that a local farmer has carved into his cornfield. The winters are storybook scenes of snowy hills teeming with clusters of happy skiers. In addition to its pleasant diversions, this region is also known for its productivity in agriculture as well as in industry and technology. Traveling down the modern streets of Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, you may be unaware of the important role the Lehigh Valley and its residents have played in the desperate struggle that carved this nation from a baker’s dozen of disjointed colonies. Even people who profess to be historically disinterested will feel a sense of respect and awe when touring the local historical sites tucked away among the modern buildings and manicured properties. Each of these sites gives testament to the courage and foresight of the local pioneers of freedom and industry who called the Lehigh Valley their home.

Key Sites on African-American History and Culture
A B C D ... W A Biographical information on African-Americans is abundantly available in the University of Delaware's Morris Library. This guide can be used to identify full-text information online, books, newspaper and periodical articles, and encyclopedia entries on this topic. This annotated listing of recommended African-American Web sites was prepared by Elna L. Saxton and Joe McClamroch, and published in the January, 1999 issue of College and Research Libraries News (vol. 60, no. 1). It is organized into five categories: Getting started, Educational sites/research centers, Organizations/associations, Afrocentric sites, and E-journals/news services. In honor of the Library of Congress' Manuscript Division's centennial, its staff selected for online display representative historical documents on eight major themes, each theme covering the papers of prominent Americans whose lives reflect our country's evolution. This site reflects the theme, "African American History and Culture." Like the other theme pages, it consists of an essay containing links to digital reproductions of selected documents. A detailed description accompanies each document. World Book editors have assembled a comprehensive look at the history of African Americans and their struggle for freedom in honor of Black History Month. The articles in this feature were taken from the World Book Multimedia Encyclopedia. There are also numerous links to World Wide Web sites concerning important figures and events in black history, as well as issues surrounding current events.

Exploration of Ancient Key-Dweller Remains on the Gulf Coast of Florida

Child's burial, the remains removed, lies in path of earth moving equipment Information Section There are thousands of Native American historic sites in Tennessee. Many of these are sacred places, containing the graves of our ancestors. Thousands of these places have been destroyed in the past, and those that still exist face a growing threat of destruction from looters digging for Indian artifacts and increasingly intense real estate development. Many people feel that this is the most pressing issue in Tennessee Indian affairs. Desecration of Indian burials is a brutal violation of the spiritual existence of the living as well as the dead. And each site lost represents a part of our culture that is gone forever - once they are bulldozed over, once the burial sites are desecrated, we can never recover that part of our heritage. Tennessee's Indian people have waged a constant battle against this loss for well over the last decade. The Alliance for Native American Indian Rights was formed in Nashville in 1989 to fight plans for a city owned landfill in an area covered with Native historical sites and burial grounds and has continued efforts to protect other sacred sites in the state (Native Nashville sponsors the group's web site). There are other groups across the state with similar missions. And unfortunately, this issue is not unique to Tennessee - Indian people all over North and South America have struggled against the destruction and desecration of their sacred places for the last 500 years. The struggle continues today, from Canada to Chile.
