President Clinton established the Commission on the Celebration of Women in American History to consider how best to acknowledge and celebrate the roles and accomplishments of women in American history. It will hold meetings to consider ideas for such celebration, including a focal point for women's history in Washington, D.C., and the use of technology to connect existing and planned historical sites, museums and libraries. The first meeting of the Commission was held on July 16, 1998, at the Canandaigua County Courthouse, the site where Susan B. Anthony was tried and convicted for voting. o Update on the President's FY-2004 Budget Request for NEH
President George W. Bush's budget proposal for FY-2004 was released to the public on February 3 the traditional first Monday after the State of the Union address. While parts of the budget were leaked in the weeks preceding February 3, the humanities community was surprised at the size of the requested increase for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). While NEH officials had spoken in various ways of an increase, no one whom NHA contacted had expected $25 million a 22% increase. A table appears below detailing the $152 million request for NEH.
WE THE PEOPLE - The new funds are entirely focused on the NEH's "We the People" initiative on American history, culture and civics. The concept of the initiative was introduced with the budget request of a year ago, but at that time, no special funds were requested. The $25 million initiative ($2 million of which is for administration) is targeted on the problem of "historical amnesia" a response to numerous polls and studies that indicate American students are seriously deficient in knowledge about their country's history and culture. President Bush inaugurated the expanded We the People initiative in a White House Rose Garden ceremony on September 17, 2002, with remarks including:
