Presidential S-Say Claim: The middle name of President Harry Truman was just the letter 'S.' Status: True. Origins: Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, came into the world on 8 May 1884. His parents, John Anderson Truman and Martha Ellen Truman, couldn't decide on a suitable name for their bouncing baby boy, and when the attending doctor finally registered the child's birth with the county clerk a month later, the infant still had no name. Eventually the Trumans chose to name their boy "Harry" after his maternal uncle, Harrison Young. Unable to decide between a middle name honoring Harry's maternal grandfather (Solomon Young) or his paternal grandfather (Anderson Shipp[e] Truman), John and Martha opted not to give little Harry a middle name at all and settled on something that could represent either grandparent: the letter 'S' by itself. (As Truman biographer David McCullough noted, using a single letter that stood for nothing specific was "a practice not unknown among the Scotch-Irish, even for first names.") A Turn of the Head Claim: During wartime, the seal of the President of the United States is modified so that the eagle's head faces the opposite direction. Status: False. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2001] Almost a year ago, the "West Wing" aired an episode where the United States was at war. An observation was made about the Presidential Seal during war time. The Presidential Seal, has a shield bearing bald eagle clutching olive branches in its right talons and arrows in its left. The eagles head is turned toward the olive branches. The "West Wing" mentioned that in times of war, the Presidential Seals are replaced with an eagle whose head is turned toward the arrows. Origins: The Great Seal of the President of the United States was fixed in its current form featuring a coat of arms similar to the one found on The Great Seal of the United States , with an eagle clutching thirteen arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other well over fifty years ago, so most of us do not recall a time when it looked any different. Gateway 1 February 2001 National African American History Month, 2001 A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America In 1915, Carter Godwin Woodson, the father of Black history, founded the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History. Each February, the Association proposes a theme to guide the celebration of National African American History Month. For this year, the Association has chosen "Creating and Defining the African-American Community: Family, Church, Politics, and Culture." This month in particular, we remember the stories of those who have helped to build our Nation and advance the cause of freedom and civil rights. We remember the bravery of the soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the sailors of the USS MASON in service to our country. We remember those who marched on Washington, sat at whites-only lunch counters, and walked rather than use segregated buses. And we remember those, known only to each of us, who helped to build our families, places of worship, and communities. When we examine our Nation's history, we discover these and countless other stories that inspire us.
