Anaconda. The largest snakes are found in the boa family, and the largest of these is the anaconda or water boa. Anaikolra, the Tamil word for anaconda, means "elephant killer". The anaconda lives throughout tropical South America, east of the Andes, mainly in the Amazon and Orinoco basins, and in the Guianas. It extends to Trinidad. The species is variable in color and size giving rise to sub-specific names. Black patches on the anaconda's back combine with dull background color to blend in with the thick, wet vegetation of its habitat. Water boa is a great alternative name for the anaconda, the most aquatic of the boas. It is never found far from water. Swamps are a favorite place. Like the crocodile, the anaconda's nostrils are on top of its snout so it can breathe easily while it is swimming. Nocturnal in habit, the anaconda lie up during the day in shallow waters or sunbathe on a low branch, usually over water. Anacondas usually lie in wait by the waters edge waiting for its prey to come down to the waters edge to drink. Striking quickly with the head grabbing the unlucky prey and dragging it underwater so that it drowns. Sometimes the anaconda will hunt on land. The usual prey caught by the snake are birds, small mammals-deer, piccaries, and large rodents such as agoutis. Fish are a large part of the diet. Turtles and caimans are sometimes attacked. It is on record that a 25 foot anaconda killed and ate a 6 foot caiman. Snakes have a special jaw attachment that allows an anaconda to swallow such a large animal. A meal of this size will last the anaconda for several weeks. During this time the snake rests until the prey has digested.

Jennifer Lopez and Jon Voight star in the Columbia Pictures thriller, ANACONDA, directed by Luis Llosa. A crew of documentarians travel deep into the Brazillian rainforest to document a lost tribe, but run into troublethe Anaconda snakes. Dozens of feet long, these killer snakes seem to enjoy killing, and are threats to our heroes at all times. Voight appears as a crazed snake hunter who is on a mission to capture an Anaconda alive. Although some real snakes were used in the filming of ANACONDA, the enormous killer snake was created by anamatronic and digital means. Providing the digital imagery for the film is Sony Pictures Imageworks. Their computer generated snake appears in dozens of shots, and was used when the snake's actions simply could not be recreated on the set with the animatronic models.

    Anaconda is a thriller starring Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight and Rap Star Ice Cube ( Boyz N The Hood ). The film is a thriller about real anaconda snakes, although the size, proportion and violence of the snakes seems to have been somewhat exagerated. A film crew set out on a journey through the Amazon to film a documentary on the discovery of a lost tribe. Along the way they pick up a stranded passenger, who seems content on taking them on a course of danger to be the first to capture the world's largest and deadliest breed of snake. Anaconda is an enjoyable film but isn't flawless by any means. The biggest flaw is the special effects. Special effects are there to make the image look real and intense, but the anacondas in this picture look like exactly what they are - a computer graphic. This is not to say the film is bad by any means. The film is still both watchable and enjoyable.
    N.B. Star ratings are out of 5.

    What is that thing slippin' and slidin' in the water?     Anaconda is well shot to provide the appropriate mysterious atmosphere, and there is the requisite ominous sound track and special effects, but somehow the giant snake just doesn't have the same scary impact as the shark in "Jaws", or the dinosaurs in "Lost World". Maybe it's because the public has been saturated with this type of film, or maybe it's hard to believe that a 40 foot snake could move so fast, and be so vengeful (does a snake even have the ability to think?), or maybe it's because everyone knows the snake is a computer fantasy which looks a little too perfect. And there isn't a lot of character interaction or plot development, so once the expedition gets into snake country, the film turns into a sequence of snake attacks and crew responses. Terri and Danny become snake bait. The best acting was by Jon Voight who delivers a campy and melodramatic performance as the obsessed snake hunter sort of a combination of the Robert Shaw role in "Jaws" and Captain Ahab in "Moby Dick" giving us grim facts about snakes while using the expedition for his own purposes and the crew members for snake bait. The other two characters who matter, Terri and Danny, never get much of a chance to show us what they are really about, other than the fact that they met in film school at USC. The point of this film really seems to be: here are some great new special effects; this time it's a giant snake. Let's throw in some characters, let the snake eat up a few, and all go home happy.

    Big Snakes
    The largest-known snake in the world is the Anaconda, or Eunectes murinus , of South America. It holds the world's record for size with one specimen, encountered by petroleum geologist in eastern Columbia in the 1944, measuring 37 1/2 feet in length. Somewhere deep in the southern swamps do they grow bigger? According to Colonel Percy H. Fawcett , a former British Army officer, surveyor and adventurer in the early 1900's, they do: We were drifting easily along on the sluggish current not far below the confluence of tigor and the Rio Negro when almost under the bow there appeared a triangular head and several feet of undulating body. It was a giant anaconda. I sprang for my rifle as the creature began to make its way up the bank, and hardly waiting to aim smashed a .44 soft-nosed bullet into its spine, ten feet below the wicked head. At once there was a flurry of foam, and several heavy thumps against the boat's keel, shaking us as though we had run on a snag... Fawcett describes how they stopped and examined the body. Though he had no ruler, he guessed the length of the creature at sixty-two feet with a twelve-inch diameter. "Such large specimens as this may not be common, but the trails in the swamps reach a width of six feet and support the statements of Indians and rubber pickers that the anaconda sometimes reaches an incredible size dwarfing that shot by me. The Brazilian Boundary Commission told me of one exceeding eighty feet in length!"

    Anacondas are related to boa constrictors and pythons. None is venomous. They are constrictors; they suffocate their prey by coiling around it and squeezing. With a weight of about 200 kg (441 lb.), the green anaconda is the most massive of the giant snakes. The body is dark green in colour (hence the name green anaconda) with large black dorsal spots and small lateral spots with lighter yellow centres. Adults can grow to more than 9 m (29.5 ft.) in length. The reticulated python is, on average, usually longer than the average anaconda, but because the green anaconda is much heavier than the other large constrictors, if you consider both length and weight, it is the largest snake in the world. The green anaconda occurs in South America, in the Amazon and Orinoco rivers system, and as far south as Bolivia. It is also found in Trinidad. Anacondas are tied very closely to water, and they are excellent swimmers and divers.
