Posted to the web December 30, 2002 Luanda Angola's popular music band "Gingas do Maculusso" will offer today a concert of solidarity to the disfavoured children at the Luanda Kuzola home. Speaking to ANGOP, "Gingas" manager, Rosa Roque, said the socio-cultural show at Kuzola home, aims at the multifaceted formation of the children from that social boarding institution. For that event, the singers will give out part of their childhood and juvenile clothing. "We appeal to the musicians and interested people to contribute to the donation for the children", adding that in 2003 the publisher of the female music band, "Aviluppa Kuimbila", is expected to record a juvenile CD dedicated to children.

http://expedition.bensenville.lib.il.us/Africa/Angola/Culture.htm
Angola - Culture Overview The cultural origins of Angola are tied to the traditions of the central Bantu peoples and the ancient kingdom of Kongo. Located on the southwestern coast of Africa, Angola became a key colony in the growing Portuguese empire after 1500, but for most of the years of its domination Portugal exerted little cultural influence, content to control the slave trade from forts along the coast. Only after the mid-19th century did Portugal seek control of the entire territory, thus spawning a resistance that inspired much art and literature. Angola's struggle for independence was long and violent, and life in the independent nation has also been marred by intense civil war. Such disorder has obstructed the development of Bantu customs and also destroyed the more Portuguese traditions of the coastal cities.

18. Art Of Angola
Wooden masks and sculptures of angola are not merely aesthetic creations, but play an important role in cultural rituals, celebrations and representing different aspects of life.
http://www.angola.org/culture/artindex.html
The Art of Angola As with most African art, the wooden masks and sculptures of Angola are not merely aesthetic creations. They play an important role in cultural rituals, representing life and death, the passage from childhood to adulthood, the celebration of a new harvest and the marking of the hunting season. Angolan artisans work in wood, bronze, ivory, malachite or ceramic mediums. Each ethno-linguistic group in Angola has its own unique artistic traits. Perhaps the single most famous piece of Angolan art is the Cokwe thinker , a masterpiece of harmony and symmetry of line. The Lunda-Cokwe in the north eastern part of Angola are also known for their superior plastic arts. Other signature pieces of Angolan art include:
  • the female mask Mwnaa-Pwo worn by male dancers in their puberty rituals.
  • polychromatic Kalelwa masks used during circumcision ceremonies
  • Cikungu and Cihongo masks which conjure up the images of the Lunda-Cokwe mythology. Two key figures in this pantheon are princess Lweji and the civilizing prince Tschibinda-Ilunga.
  • the black ceramic art of Moxico of central/eastern Angola
Prior to the late 1980s, all marketing of handicrafts were under the control of Artiang, an arm of the Ministry of Culture. However once this commercial monopoly over the production of art was removed, art in Angola blossomed.

Country Info Angola Introduction Angola General Data Angola Maps Angola Culture ... Angola Time and Date Angola Culture Back to Top Angolan culture is fragmented into a myriad of highly localized clusters, but its origins lie within a broad central African Bantu tradition, shared with neighbouring countries. Angolan peoples generally trace their descent through their mothers, and lineages or extended families are important in social life. People often give some allegiance to precolonial kings and chiefs, even though their political functions have long been in abeyance and they may be situated on the other side of a modern political frontier. There are also strong vestiges of a widespread precolonial system of slavery, which the colonial authorities were slow to abolish. Polygamy, the veneration of ancestors, and combating witchcraft are practiced, even by many converts to Christianity. Traditional culture has been increasingly overlaid by Western influences, which tend to predominate in the towns. The 19th century saw the emergence of a dynamic group of educated Creoles in Angolan towns, similar in some respects to those of Sierra Leone, who wrote newspaper articles, history books, novels, and poems in Portuguese. The right-wing dictatorship in Portugal drove much of this literary activity underground after 1926 but failed to destroy it altogether.
