At CATAC our goals are to provide humane training and behavior consultations for the pet dog, to make the owner-dog bond as strong and rewarding as possible, and to keep pet dogs in their homes. Behavior training is a necessary component of dog ownership. Dogs don't have language and need to be taught how to interpret our expectations of them. Through positive reinforcement training methods, we help dog owners teach their pets basic behaviors such as sit, down, come when called, stay and walk nicely on leash, among others. Owners are then better able to communicate with their dogs, making dog ownership a much more rewarding experience. Through group classes, private in-home training and behavior consultations, we hope to help owners create the dog of their dreams. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us! Introduction to Animal Training
When did people first start training animals? People have been training animals for thousands of years. Historically, falconers have trained hawks, and hunters have trained dogs. Dogs have also been trained for herding livestock and for pulling sleds. Elephants have been trained for carrying logs. Horses and camels have been trained for riding and hauling. Today, people still train these animals. Marine mammal training, however, is a relatively new field. For example, people have been training killer whales for only about the past 25 years. It is only recently that we have begun to explore the learning aptitude of marine mammals. Something to remember about animal training. The field of marine mammal training continues to change as we learn more and more about the behavior of these unique animals. Today's leaders in the field of animal training do not have all the answers to the questions that intrigue us. SeaWorld trainers are working at the forefront of animal training. Hence, our knowledge is relatively new and ever-changing. Long term studies in marine mammal behavior will continue to give us new insights. Learning Theory and Learning Theory Classical Conditioning Operant Conditioning Four possible consequences of a behavior ... Who's Using Clicker Training Learning Theory and Learning Theory "Learning Theory" is a discipline of psychology that attempts to explain how an organism learns. It consists of many different theories of learning, including instincts, social facilitation, observation, formal teaching, memory, mimicry, and classical and operant conditioning. It is these last two that are of most interest to animal trainers. Why should animal trainers be bothered with learning the theory behind how their animals learn? Many excellent trainers have no formal schooling or organized understanding of how their training is effective or how their charges work. But training is both an art and a science. More and more trainers - pet owners, show competitors, horseback riders, show-business trainers, zookeepers, aquarium trainers and more - are finding that an understanding of learning theory helps them understand their animals' behaviors better, and plan their training accordingly. So trainers are learning the theory of learning theory!

    News: Shelter Animal Training
    20 November 2002
Caleb, Henrietta, "Big Red", Yoshi, these are just some of the dogs that have been adopted since they began the new training program at HSPC. Linda Laughlin, an experienced dog trainer, works at the shelter four days a week with dogs assigned to the program by the HSPC Shelter Committee. The focus of the program is to socialize older, long term dogs in order for them to become more adoptable.
Linda teaches them basic manners such as "sit" and "down", but more importantly, she helps them to enjoy human attention, brushing, nail trimming, and walking on a leash without pulling, all things they will need to be familiar with when they go to a home.
Linda, who owns K-9 Camp Laughlin in the Conway area, has raised and trained dogs all of her life. Several years ago she became interested in the canine sport, dog agility, and she and her Jack Russell Terrier, Pecabo, recently became the first and only handler and dog team in Arkansas to win the title of Master Agility Dog.
