Indianapolis, Indiana: The NARSI ) offers the best youth recreation and sport directors and coaches training programs in America. The emphasis is on training adults to work with children ages 5 - 14 and the overall well-being of these youths. The emotional, physical, spiritual, and cultural development of the children is of prime concern. The classes are recommended for personnel of recreation, youth, drug elimination, housing, health, wellness, and health departments. Tribal Council Members who oversee these departments are encouraged to participate.
The origin of NARSI is rooted in the recreation directors education conference programs planned and produced by Judith G. Shepherd in Indianapolis in 1994 and 1995. The ongoing development is due to the popularity and growth of those conferences.
Native American Youth Recreation and Sport Administration NAYRSA ) is appropriate for recreation administrators and directors, assistant directors, and financial officers of recreation departments. The session of Level I is a full eight hours of training. The fee includes an inclusive guide, textbooks, and meals. This is a program which gives details on the "how-tos" and the "whys" of each step necessary in the development and advancement of an excellent recreation department. To be able to direct a recreation program, the administrator needs to know the details of the youth coach program of study, therefore, NARSI requires the administrators/directors to take the

The White Mountain Apache Tribe
The word "Apache" is derived from the Yuma word for "fighting-men." Indigenous to the southwest, the Apaches were known throughout history for their superior strategy, strength, and courage in times of conflict. Upon the arrival of European settlers from the 17th to 19th centuries, the Apache carved their place in the history of the old west through such famous tribal leaders as Cochise and Geronimo. Today, the White Mountain Apache Tribe, residents to the Fort Apache Reservation, are an integral part of the White Mountains. While maintaining their traditional and social structure, the Apache have deep spiritual ties to the beauty of the forested White Mountains. Recent changes in the socio-economic structure of the tribe finds them as hosts to some of the most popular attractions in the region, most notably historic Fort Apache Hon-Dah Resort and Casino , and Sunrise Ski Resort , one of the premiere skiing facilities.

HHS Awards New Native American Grants for Tribal Elders and Caregivers
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced $27.6 million in grants to support vital community programs and services for tribal elders and their caregivers. This amount reflects an 8.5 percent increase in funding for fiscal year 2002 and includes 10 tribal organizations receiving federal funds for aging services for the first time. “The services provided through these grants are helping to improve the lives of our most revered citizens. We know that serious health disparities continue to plague Native American communities, and lack of access to health and social services remains a challenge,” Secretary Thompson said. “This program is a vital component of our prevention and education efforts to reach out to vulnerable communities.” Administered by HHS' Administration on Aging (AoA), the 236 grants awarded to tribal organizations will provide nutrition and supportive services to Native American elders to help them to remain independent and healthy. In addition, 177 Native American Caregiver Support Grants, available under the new National Family Caregiver Support Program, will support the caregivers of American Indian, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian elders.

Apache Tribe
by Todd Underwood The word "apache" comes from the Yuma word for "fighting-men" and from the Zuni word meaning "enemy." The Apache tribe consists of six subtribes: the Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan and Kiowa. Each subtribe is from a different geographial region. It is possible, due to their nomadic nature, that several names were used to identify the same tribe. The Apaches are commonly known for their incredible endurance and warfare skills. First arriving in the Southwest sometime between A.D.1000 and 1400, the Apaches carved out a home on the south side of the Rocky mountains. As early as 1540, the Apaches confronted Coronado in eastern New Mexico and were called "vaqueros." By the 1600's, they were also living in Arizona. Between 1656 and 1675, the Apaches continuously raided Spanish Settlers and Pueblo Indians in what is now known as New Mexico. In 1680, their population was approximately 5000. In 1692, the Spaniards reconquered New Mexico and the Apaches were starting to make enemies. In 1723 the Comanche defeated the

Two Native American tribes - both with large tracts of virtually unexplored land that could hold millions of barrels of crude oil - will join a U.S. Department of Energy program to apply high-tech innovations to help locate these energy resources.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson announced today that the Jicarilla Apache Tribe in New Mexico, and the Ute Indian Tribe in Utah will be part of two new projects to be added to the Energy Department's Native American oil technology assistance program. The department will provide a total of $695,000 to the projects. "Our goal is to provide tools for Native Americans to develop and manage their mineral resources by providing them access to the latest technological innovations," Richardson said. "This effort can return economic dividends to the tribes at the same time it helps to strengthen our country's energy security." The New Mexico Project In the New Mexico project, Advanced Resources International, headquartered in Denver, will work with the Jicarilla Apache Tribe. The Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation in north-central New Mexico has a rich history of oil and gas production, however, most of the producing wells have been drilled in the southern half of the Reservation. The unexplored northern part holds significant potential for future oil production because it lies in the same geologic trend as oil-producing fields surrounding the Reservation.
