Near Eastern Languages 18.1 The 'Near East' is widely defined and, in this context, extends from Morocco to Mongolia and from Ethiopia to Kazakhstan. The languages covered include Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, the range of Iranian and Turkic languages across central Asia, the languages of the Caucasus (principally Georgian and Armenian), Coptic, Amharic, Aramaic, Syriac and the languages of the ancient Near East, as well as Yiddish, Mongolian and Urdu. 18.2 The Library aims to satisfy the present and future research and teaching needs of the University. Near Eastern Studies Near Eastern Studies at Princeton go back to the turn of the century when, as elsewhere, interest in this field, Biblically oriented, centered on the ancient history of the ``cradle of civilization.'' The roots were diffuse, albeit vigorous; there were pioneer scholars of distinction and beginnings of a superlative library for teaching and research. The most dynamic pioneer was Howard Crosby Butler , a specialist in ancient Near Eastern archaeology and architecture who mounted expeditions to Syria and Anatolia in 1899, 1904, and 1909 and headed the notable excavations at Antioch and Sardis; he was Princeton's charter trustee of the Jerusalem School for Oriental Research. In 1901 he brought to Princeton the noted German epigrapher, Enno Littmann, who had accompanied him in Syria; Littmann served as librarian of the Oriental collections and as lecturer in Semitic philology until 1906 when he returned to Tbingen. Four years later he was succeeded by another German scholar, Rudolph Brnnow who was Professor of Semitic Philology. After Brnnow's death in 1917, the teaching of Semitics declined, and the development of Sanskrit and Indo-European philology began auspiciously under Harold H. Bender

Granara, Director of Undergraduate Studies The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations introduces students to the peoples, languages, cultures, and societies of the Near and Middle East. Beyond the development of skills in one (or more) of the languages of the region and participation in the Department's one-semester sophomore tutorial, a wide variety of directions of study is available to concentrators. The concentration is intended to provide a solid grounding in the student's area of focus and to offer an in-depth look at the ways in which modern scholars seek to understand the languages and cultures that have come from this region and that have been so influential throughout the world. One of the strengths of the concentration in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations is the individual attention each student receives and the flexibility to develop a program of study within the broader arena of the Near East that reflects her or his specific interests. Depending, then, on these interests and the availability of faculty and other resources, students may elect to follow a direction such as Modern Middle Eastern Studies, Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, Biblical Studies, Arabic, Iranian Studies, Turkish Studies, or Near Eastern Archaeology. Weaknesses/Exclusions SCOPE This overview focuses on Library of Congress holdings of resources concerned with the areas covered by the Near East Section whether these are in custody of the Section or in other units of the Library. The Near East Section holds an estimated two hundred thousand titles in thirty-six languages including Arabic, Persian, Pushto, Turkish, Armenian, Georgian and the many languages of Central Asia such as Uzbek and Azerbaijani. A greater number of materials is dispersed in the general book and periodical collections, and in the Law, Manuscripts, Geography and Maps, Music and Motion Picture Divisions. Collectively, the Library's collections cover all fields of Middle Eastern studies in all fields of knowledge except clinical medicine and technical agriculture. SIZE GENERAL RESEARCH STRENGTHS The Library collections are especially strong in areas such as Islamic studies, literature, history and social sciences.
