BIOGRAPHIES FAMOUS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS While by no means comprehensive, this listing provides an overview of many of the men and women who have played or are playing an important role in the development of the landscape architecture profession in the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Jacob Bigelow Nineteenth-century designer of  Mt. Auburn Cemetery near Cambridge, Mass.  He was among the first in the United States to propose multiple uses for cemeteries (picnicking, general open space purposes). Thomas D. Church (1902-78) Prolific (more than 4,000 projects) U.S. landscape architect and creator of the modern "California garden," a distinctive garden type that is suited to a moderate Mediterranean climate and features outdoor "rooms," low maintenance, high livability and the use of native plants. Horace W. S. Cleveland (1814-1900) American landscape architect who proposed fundamental changes in American cities, pressing for better sanitation, park systems and public planning commissions.  He designed estates, state capitol grounds, parks, private town residences and suburbs throughout the Midwest. Robert Morris Copeland Pioneer American landscape architect who formed an early partnership with Horace Cleveland in the late 1850s.

6. Biographies Of American Architects, 1897-1947
Brief biographies of architects who died between 1897 and 1947, from the American Art Annual and Who's Category Arts Architecture History architects......BRIEF biographies OF AMERICAN architects Who Died Between 1897 and 1947,Transcribed from the American Art Annual by Earle G. Shettleworth
http://www.sah.org/aame/bioint.html
BRIEF BIOGRAPHIES
OF AMERICAN
ARCHITECTS

Who Died Between 1897 and 1947 Transcribed from the American Art Annual by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., Director, Maine Historic Preservation Commission.
Between 1897 and 1947 the American Art Annual and its successor volume Who's Who in American Art included brief obituaries of prominent American artists, sculptors, and architects. During this fifty-year period, the lives of more than twelve-hundred architects were summarized in anywhere from a few lines to several paragraphs.
Recognizing the reference value of this information, I have carefully made verbatim transcriptions of these biographical notices, substituting full wording for abbreviations to provide for easier reading. After each entry, I have cited the volume in which the notice appeared and its date.
The word "photo" after an architect's name indicates that a picture and copy negative of that individual is on file at the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. While the Art Annual and Who's Who contain few photographs of the architects, the Commission has gathered these from many sources and is pleased to make them available to researchers.

The much-loved statue of the cartoon character Lobey Dosser has been attacked by vandals. It was daubed with paint and the supporting leg severely bent; only the strength of the steel armature saved it from being wrenched from its base. The statue, showing Bud Neill's cartoon character Lobey Dosser mounted on his trusty steed El Fideldo with the arch villain Rank Bajin, was erected by public subscription and created by the sculptors Tony Morrow and Nick Gillon.
