long with numerous nomadic tribespeople, two main indigenous groups existed in Argentina before the European arrival. In the northwest, near Bolivia and the Andes, was a people known as the Diaguita, while further south and to the east were the Guarani. Together the Diaguita and the Guarani constitute the origins of permanent agricultural civilization in Argentina, both developing the cultivation of maize. The Diaguita are also remembered for having successfully prevented the powerful Inca from expanding their empire into Argentina from what is now Bolivia. It was perhaps a legacy of this successful resistance that enabled the native peoples of Argentina to carry on a prolonged campaign against colonization and rule by the Spanish. The first Spaniard to land in Argentina, Juan de Solis, was killed in 1516, and several attempts to found Buenos Aires were stymied by the local inhabitants. Inland cities were more successful, and it wasn't until the late 16th century that Buenos Aires was securely established. Despite its military success, indigenous resistance was inexorably weakened by the introduction of diseases from Europe. Even after the native threat became minimal, however, Argentina was still mostly neglected by Spain, which was more interested in developing Lima and the riches of Peru. Buenos Aires was forbidden to trade with foreign countries, and the city became a smuggler's haunt. The restrictive trade

Argentina's history
is characterized by a few main features that has affected the treatment of the gauchos and other marginalized groups through time:
Geography . The PAMPAS are vast extensions of flat grassland which separate main areas of population. Like the N. American frontier they are credited with forging a certain kind of national spirit (In N. America: "pioneers" on the frontier were hardy, independent, and brave for instance. In Argentina, the gauchos, who lived from cattle herding or other ranching activity, were independent (no fixed home or family), violent (had their own code of honor which was enforced by their knives) and skilled at survival. Argentina had always been remote geographically from the center of colonial activity: remember that it wasn't until the ate 1700's that the Spaniards established a capital/viceroyalty here from which silver would be shipped overseas. Before that, Argentina was mostly overlooked and did not receive widespread cultural and economic benefits from Spain/Europe. Extremely divisive politics from Independence on Even though gauchos helped expell the Spaniards, fighting side by side along liberal intellectuals, Argentina quickly crumbled into a bitter dispute between UNITARIOS and FEDERALES. Unitarios (formed by the liberal "afrancesados" (Frenchified, literally), intellectuals with Enlightenment backgrounds and grand ideals for the entire nation) wanted a united Argentina with a strong central government where the provinces (think of the remote Pampas) would be controlled by the Buenos Aires elite (who, after all, knew what was best for the "uncivilized" or "barbaric" backlands. The Federales wanted more of a Republican structure which would give strong rights to the provinces under individual caudillos who would make and enforce laws more locally. This would allow for continuation of regional powers that existed before the Independence (ie. the strongmen in the provinces wouldn't have to back down to the intellectuals in the city).

Argentina History of Argentina Argentina's pre-Columbian Indian population put up a good fight against the Spanish, but the colonists eventually became permanent fixtures, founding important settlements in the mid 16th century. They acquired a good deal of the country's best land, established estancias (ranches) and made their livelihoods through agriculture and livestock. Independence from Spain was declared in 1816 under the guidance of General San Martin. British money flowed in, as did European immigrants. By the start of World War I, Argentina was one of the world's leading agricultural exporters, and the phrase "as rich as an Argentine" was commonly heard abroad. While those with land were doing well, the working class was suffering. Populist leader Juan Peron, along with his wife Evita, found great support from these Argentines. He led the country from 1946 to 1955, and again from 1973 to 1974, bringing political and economic reform.

Encouraged by Argentina's potential to supply the world food demand, and committed to improving Argentine agricultural productivity Cargill Inc. , began its operations in 1947 with a seed research operation in the corn belt of the country.
Five decades later, that seed became one of the largest agribusiness complexes in Argentina, involving production and distribution of farm inputs, processing and merchandising of raw materials and food ingredients, and providing related services.
Cargill has become a leading factor of change in the agriculture and agribusiness industry in Argentina and has contributed to the expansion of the opportunities for Argentine ag-based exports.
This has been achieved through a permanent reinvestment of earnings in new facilities, technologies and activities, within a business culture that emphasizes quality for its products and services, a safe environment, good business practices, responsibility and efficiency.
Since 1947 Cargill has been committed to improving and expanding the potential of Argentine agriculture and its related industries.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... ARGENTINA Europeans first discovered Argentina in 1502 during the voyage of Amerigo Vespucci. In 1580 the Spanish founded a colony in Buenos Aires. By 1800 Buenos Aires had a population of 50,000. In 1816 Argentina declared it independence from Spain. In 1824 a constitutional assembly passed a constitution. Conservative political forces for the rest of the 19th century dominated Argentina. During this period the country grew rapidly.
In 1916 Radical forces took control of the government. They were ousted in 1935. In 1946 Juan Peron took control of the government. Peron was ousted in 1955 by the military. The military maintained power until 1973, when violence forced the military to allow the return of Peron. He died the next year and his third wife Isabella Peron took over. She was able to maintain power for only two years. The military regained power and instituted a very repressive regime in which 20,000 leftist disappeared.
When Argentina occupied the Falkland Islands in 1982 the British defeated the Argentineans and reoccupied the Falklands. The defeat resulted in the fall of military government. In 1989 Carlos Memen became the President of the country and began serious economic and political reform.

A prelude to independence was the British attack on Buenos Aires. Admiral Sir Home Popham and Gen. William Carr Beresford took the city in 1806 after the Spanish viceroy fled. An Argentine militia force under Jacques de Liniers ended the British occupation and beat off a renewed attack under Gen. John Whitelocke in 1807. On May 25, 1810 (May 25 is the Argentine national holiday), revolutionists, acting nominally in favor of the Bourbons dethroned by Napoleon (see
