Opportunities for Scientists Opportunities for Teachers Outreach Toolbox ... MCB Department Inquiry Institute
Educators involved in science education of kindergarten through twelve grade and undergraduate students will find the Inquiry Institute a powerful professional development. The Inquiry Institute aims to:
  • Deepen understanding of inquiry-based instruction Promote diverse questioning strategies. Instructor questioning is central to assessment of students' understanding and also acts as a model for students as they refine their questions and develop understanding of the nature of science. Foster communication and networking between science educators of K-16 students.
The Institute was established in 1999 as a K-8 teacher professional development and is expanding to include K-12 and University outreach and science educators. Inquiry-based instruction, hopefully, results in students who are engaged in open-ended, student -centered activities. Students investigate natural phenomena, using their background knowledge and experiences. Students pose questions, solve problems, and create answers or tentative generalizations. The Inquiry Institute is a three-day institute held the last week in May. The Institute includes two core sessions, Immersion Experience and Questioning, that all participants engage in and a choice of three sessions from the five sessions listed below.
