The Microcomputers in Education Conference is in its 23rd year of providing K-12 and university-level educational professionals with an annual forum to learn, exchange, and survey the changes being made in the field of education technology. Through hands-on workshops, lecture-format and interactive "short" sessions, discussions with key industry speakers, and a vendor exhibition hall, participants have the unique opportunity to discover and share what they need to develop the appropriate use of technology in education. Conference dates are March 17-19, 2003.
The Conexiones project teaches lifelong academic skills to migrant students by infusing technology, science and mathematics into a highly individualized curriculum.

August 2002 Table of Contents Cal-Tax Home Email Editor Guest Commentary School Vouchers Aid Taxpayers, Too By Kevin McCarthy Kevin McCarthy is president of the Arizona Tax Research Association T he recent U.S. Supreme Court decision on school vouchers has reignited debate on this important public policy issue. This decision, as well as a similar ruling from the Arizona Supreme Court in 1999, opens the way for a healthy and focused debate on the benefits of vouchers. While few would argue that the overriding benefit of vouchers is to empower parents with the choice of where to send their child to school, the financial benefits vouchers provide to taxpayers should also weigh heavily in future debates. According to the most recent report from the state Department of Education, Arizona spent an average of $7,300 to educate every K-12 public school student for fiscal 2001. Total statewide spending for K-12 schools topped $6.2 billion, up from $5.5 billion in fiscal 2000, a one year jump of $699 million (12.7 percent). As one the fastest growing states in the country, Arizona's top fiscal challenge is meeting the annual costs associated with ever-increasing student growth in our K-12 schools. By far the largest increase in the state budget each year is the appropriation to fund student growth.

http://www.altp.org/ClassroomComputers/neweconomy.htm
NEW ECONOMY AND TECHNOLOGY IN OUR SCHOOLS The New Economy highlighted in a recent article by Hal Mattern and a column by Naaman Nickell in the Arizona Republic in July is an old idea with a new name. Ten years ago, when the Arizona Strategic Partnership for Economic Development (resulting in GSPED) and the Phoenix Futures Forum were in full swing, the main focus was on emerging technology, developing community, and the transformation from the industrial age to the information age. The application of technology was not only recognized for workplace processes and export products but for greatly enhancing the process of education and life span learning. A large section of the economy had become managing, processing and distributing information. To note the work of Alvin Toffler, the work of the mind is replacing the work of the hands for global economic competitiveness. Progressive Policy Institute data for the New Economy shows wage premium for skilled jobs is growing, electronic commerce is taking off, and more schools and homes are in the Internet, but math and reading abilities remain stagnant. The reason is that we have not yet effectively applied information technologies to our K-12 schools. Arizona is in the top 10 of the New Economy but in the bottom 10 when it comes to performance of our K-12 school system. Technology adoption in the class room is a necessary condition for all other K-12 reforms and plans for improvement that Arizona urgently trying to make.

University Support and Vision for K-12 Education Technology
Dr. William Lewis
January 16, 1996 The Arizona Colleges and Universities have long recognized the important role played by the K-12 education system as they prepare students for a lifelong learning experience. In recognition of this role, Higher Education within the state has provided technology support to K-12 in many ways, the most notable being the Arizona State Public Information Network ( ASPIN). ASPIN is a partnership between the State Universities and the Community Colleges that has been providing technology support to K-12 and the general citizenry of Arizona for several years. This support has been in many forms, from providing Internet connectivity to offering training for teachers in the use of the Internet in their classes. The Internet connections have been accomplished via a partnership between the K-12 schools and the ASPIN schools. One of the most recent programs is being funded by the US West Foundation and will result in providing one percent of the K-12 teachers in Arizona with laptop computers and training for their use in the classroom. As K-12 education attempts to move into the INFORMATION AREA, it must do so in an environment of at-best level budgets and in many cases pressures to reduce the costs of providing a public education. It is not sufficient to provide schools with Internet connections! Schools must be wired to the classrooms! Classrooms must have computers!

On February 6, 2003, Draft Preventive Maintenance Guidelines were submitted to the SFB for information purposes. These guidelines were prepared by a committee of School District representatives, who will serve as the statewide peer group in the continuing evolution and final approval of these guidelines. The School Facilities Board and staff are very appreciative of their excellent efforts. The Board instructed SFB staff to begin statewide workshops to secure additional School District comments. We have attached the Draft Preventive Maintenance Guidelines for initial review and comments. It is suggested that you read the Board Report first and then proceed to the seven (7) individual preventive maintenance components. Each of the seven components is broken down to a number of sheets.
The rows on the sheet represent the preventive maintenance activity.
