When Krystalyn Kinsel’s scholarship money did not arrive on time, the Native American Student Affairs center gave the political science freshman and member of the Navajo tribe an emergency loan to purchase her books. Many students need loans like this to make it through the school year, said Monica Nuvamsa, senior coordinator of Native American Student Affairs. Like other multicultural student affairs centers, Native American Student Affairs strives to guide and assist its students, ultimately seeing them through to graduation, Nuvamsa said. The freshman dropout rate is 23 percent, meaning that half of the students who leave the university do so before the beginning of their second year, according to an Undergraduate Education and Student Research report.

School Visits by John Bianchi Elementary school - Grades K through 8 - Large group or small group presentations HOME PRESENTATION PREPARATION SETUP ... E-MAIL I n addition to school visits, John has addressed Reading Conferences, International Reading Associations, and Librarian Associations in Arizona, British Columbia, California, Indiana, Manitoba, Montana, Pennsylvania, Ontario and Washington State. In 1997, He and partner Frank Edwards presented at the International Reading Association's National Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.
Presentation I try to do three things during my presentation: inform, entertain, and inspire. To accomplish this I usually divide my talk into two or three parts. The first part is used for questions and answers. To illustrate my answers, I draw cartoons on an overhead and give the transparencies to the students. I use the second part to show slides of my work, my home, my studio, my family, the neighborhood critters, or (depending on the questions) whatever else might interest the students. In the optional third part, the students and I draw a cartoon together. My primary goal is to motivate students to read, write, and draw.

"In an effort to better coordinate reading and literacy activities in California, a number of interested organizations and individuals met in San Francisco on June 4, 1997 under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Education's Region IX office. This consortia, the California Reads Roundtable, plans to meet on a regular basis and to use this website as a means to better coordinate reading activities in California Your participation and suggestions are invited." AskA+ Locator
The Virtual Reference Desk AskA+ Locator provides resources and links to experts that offer answers to questions that students might have. "The following is a list of all the sites organized by their subject matter. The list is in alphabetical order of subject, and then title name. There may be more than one site with the same name listed, but each link leads to an individual resource. " This is an excellent way for schools to allow and promote collaboration beyond the school site.
