Press Release
CDC funds 10 Prevention Projects on Sexual Violence and Intimate Partner Violence Among Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations The alarmingly high risk of sexual and intimate partner violence among racial and ethnic minorities demands immediate public health attention. To address these findings from the National Violence Against Women Survey, CDC has awarded $4.1 million for 10 cooperative agreements to support the development, implementation and evaluation of sexual violence and intimate partner violence prevention programs and services targeting minority populations. Funding for demonstration projects has been awarded to St. Luke’s Roosevelt Institute for Health Sciences - New York, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health, The Family Crisis Shelter, Inc. - Hawaii, the RAND Corporation - California, the National Asian Women’s Health Organization - California, the Latino Community Development Agency, Inc. - Oklahoma, the University of South Carolina, the Boston Public Health Commission, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing - Maryland, and the Arizona Board of Regents–University of Arizona. These organizations were selected based on their capacity to identify and respond to the special needs of racial and ethnic minority populations in their communities, including African Americans, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders. The organizations may develop programs for children, victims and perpetrators; programs on dating violence for school-aged youth; or programs that link community-based partners to provide services.

PROGRAMS and SERVICES
Youth Evaluation and Treatment Centers provides a full continuum of services for at risk youth and families. These services include: School based Prevention, Family Stabilization, Specialized Education and Residential Care. A brief description of each Service follows.
PREVENTION
Services are provided to twelve elementary schools in the Glendale and Peoria School Districts. The purpose of this program is to build resiliency skills to prevent at risk youth from manifesting dysfunctional and problematic behaviors. Prevention Specialists work directly with students on developing social and life skills designed to build positive self-concepts, enhance coping abilities and encourage healthy lifestyles. These services have been provided to over 7000 children. This program is funded by public funds allocated under contract by the Arizona Department of Health Services.
FAMILY BUILDERS
Stabilization, preservation and crises reduction services are provided to families referred by Child Protective Services. These families have demonstrated minimal levels of child abuse or neglect. Skilled therapists offer families counseling, parenting classes, resource development and problem solving assistance in an effort to reduce the family's stress and crisis level, enhance their ability to function, and minimize the possibility of future abusive behavior. This program is part of the Carenow Network and is funded by the Arizona Department of Economic Security.

PRESS RELEASE
Northern Arizona Students "Hop To It!"
"This is really a boost for recycling education in the schools and communities of Northern Arizona. We’re glad that we can be a partner in it and help make it happen. We’re already processing the recycling from trailers in these communities. The Northeastern Arizona Recycling Alliance, Arizona Clean & Beautiful and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality provided those and we hope they’ll be able to grow that infrastructure in the future, as well as school recycling. So this is all a great beginning for a widespread recycling plan for the region." said Jonathon Koehn, Conservation Coordinator for the City of Flagstaff.
The Hop To It program is also being introduced at Abia Judd School in Prescott and at Supia Middle School in Scottsdale.
