Background
One of the amazing things about visiting Armenia is that the more you look around, the older the place gets. Recent History in Armenia starts in the 4th c. CE, and then goes back to the time Alexander the Great began his conquest of the known world. Just Getting Started History begins with the first great Ancestral Armenian Empire, Urartu, which rose around 1250 BCE, a potent rival to the Assyrians and Babylonians.
Then there is the Beginning to Get Old History , which begins at the time of Troy, goes past the Old Dynasty era to the Cradle of Civilization, when humans created the first cities, discovered the wheel, and uncovered the secrets of copper, bronze and iron. But what really begins to tests your ability to comprehend history at all, is that Armenia's history

The Jewish Community of Armenia History and activities
The Jewish community in Armenia dates back almost 2000 years. When the emperor Tigran the Great retreated from Palestine in the first century A.D. , he brought with him 10000 Jews. During ancient times, Jews were known to live in Armenia, and this is even noted in the Gemara. However, there was no indigenous Jewish population in modern times. In the early 19th century, Jews began arriving in Armenia from Poland and Persia, and created Sephardim and Ashkenazim Jewish communities in Yerevan, the nation's capital. A number of displaced Jews settled in Soviet Armenia during and after World War II and the estimated Jewish population at that time was approximately 5000, living mostly in Yerevan. The largest wave of Jews arrived in Armenia between 1965 and 1972, mainly engineers, members of intelligentsia and military, and families of eugenics from Russia and Ukraine attracted by the more liberal regime in Armenia at that time. The Jewish community today comprises some 1000 individuals. Yet because of an extremely high intermarriage rate among Jews now living in Armenia, some analysts consider the number several hundred higher. During Soviet times, there was a modicum of Jewish underground activity in Yerevan especially after 1967. When emigration cased, it was facilitated in Armenia by the fact that Armenia was less ideological, less anti-Semitic and more liberal than other countries of the former Soviet Union. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union almost all the Jews who emigrated made aliya to Israel, especially during the extreme hardship period of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Along with the Jewish emigration during that time, an estimated one-sixth of the overall Armenian labor force migrated. Today, approximately 400 Jewish families reside in Armenia.

After the destruction of the Seleucid Empire, the first Armenian state

    Armenia
History The stellate Babylonian map on a clay tablet is one of the world 's oldest maps (5th century B.C.). One of the six countries represented on it is Armenia . Movses of Khoren, 5th century historian, connects the origin of Armenians, according popular legends, with Hayk, an epic hero and one of Noah's great grandchildren. The origin of the Armenian people have now been explained scientifically, by archaeological studies. The Armenian upland was one of the cradles of human civilization. Primitive stone implements, made about half a million years ago during the stone age the Chellian stage of the Paleolithic period, the oldest in the history of man were found in different areas of the upland, at the foothills of the Aragats (Satani car) and in the canyon of the Razdan (Arzni, Nurnus). Stone axes and arrow -heads dating from the new Stone Age -the Neolithic period (between the 6th and 3rd millennia B .C . )- were also found. Thus the oldest Armenian kingdom, uniting the vast territories of Haiasa, Nairi and Urartu, arose on the remains of Urartu. This completed the process of formation of the Armenian people. The name "Armenia" appears for the first time in history in the inscription of the Persian King Darius (Hystaspis) I written in three languages in 521 B.C. on the Behistun cliff near the city of Kermanshah. Here the country is called "Armina" in the Persian text, "Harminia" in the Elamic text and "Urashtu" in the Babylonian.

The U.S. Commercial Service: A History
Today's U.S. Commercial Service was foreshadowed in 1897 when the Department of State created the Bureau of Foreign Commerce and approved for the first time public distribution of diplomatic, consular and commercial reports. Also in 1897, U.S. Senator Albert J. Beveridge sounded a theme for the next century: "American factories are making more than the American people can use…fate has written our policy for us—the trade of the world must and shall be ours." Although many today may reject this jingoistic rhetoric and espouse instead the mutual benefits of trade, the central role of trade in our politics and in our economic prosperity seems beyond question. This timeline reflects on the role played by the 1800 men and women of the U. S. Commercial Service in carrying out their mission to promote U.S. goods and services and to protect U.S. business interests around the world. 1897 The U.S. Department of State establishes the Bureau of Foreign Commerce and orders

An Orthodox Christian country, Armenia was incorporated into Russia in 1828 and the USSR in 1920. Armenian leaders remain preoccupied by the long conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a primarily Armenian-populated exclave, assigned to Soviet Azerbaijan in the 1920s by Moscow. Armenia and Azerbaijan began fighting over the exclave in 1988; the struggle escalated after Soviet Union in 199both countries attained independence from the 1. By May 1994, when a cease-fire took hold, Armenian forces held not only Nagorno-Karabakh but also a significant portion of Azerbaijan proper. The economies of both sides have been hurt by their inability to make substantial progress toward a peaceful resolution.

    Origins
Armenians are an Indo-European race, whose origins are not clearly known. Specialists speculate that the Armenians migrated to the Armenian Highland via the Balkans or the Caucasus. At that time the area was inhabited by the Urartians, who seem to have assimilated very quickly and absorbed the language of the newcomer Armenians. An advanced Urartian nation existed at the turn of the first millennium before Christ, later replaced by the first Armenian kingdom in the sixth century B.C.. This kingdom united the tribes of Hayasi and Armen. Tigran the Great
Armenia was independent on and off starting in the ninth century, BC. At times it was splintered, at other times engulfed temporarily by neighbors, but until the Armenian genocide in 1915, large numbers of Armenians lived throughout the Caucasus and Anatolia, from the Mediterranean, to the Black and Caspian seas. At its largest, the Armenian Empire encompassed that entire area under the rule of Tigran the Great, shortly before the time of Christ's birth. Christianity
The work of the apostles Thaddeus and Bartholomew in Armenia after Jesus' crucifixion set the stage for the official conversion of Armenia in 301 A.D. to Christianity, the first country to officially do so. Traditionally, it was Saint Gregory the Illuminator who's prayers healed the king, causing the pagan king, and country to become officially Christian. A century later the monk Mesrop Mashtots invented the Armenian alphabet in order to translate the Bible.
