11:09 AM My daughter is 5 years old so we don't have to register yet. I am wondering when we do register her we have to have "school" 4 hours a day how do you fill that much time for a kindergartner?

11:27 AM The great thing is that play is learning!!! In a K classroom most of their time is spent doing art and manipulatives and puzzles etc. That is all learning. Playing outside or putting a piece of tape on the floor to practice "balancing" is all learning. When she asks you a question about a pinecone or the weather etc. That's school and she's learning. Also since she is 5 you can do kindergarten your own way this year and you can register her in 1st for next year. There are so many things that our children do that are natural learning experiences but we can document them all the same. Going to the park and playing in the sand with water is science!
Blessings! Have you read any Charlotte Mason?

Homeschooling Kindergarten When I think of Kindergarten , I remember painting and snack and naptime. I remember playing in the little wooden kitchen with the play food and dishes. Kindergarten should remain to be a fun time - a memorable time for both the parent and the child. For my oldest child, I used a full-on curriculum from a Christian publisher for Kindergarten (I spent about $250) - and we did everything in the curriculum. The poor child. It seems that your first usually suffers the most while you learn what you're doing. For my next two children I used the following curriculum and programs that I put together myself. Language Arts: Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons ( Compare prices We tried I always followed up with the Abeka 1st grade phonics book, Letters and Sounds 1, to insure they kept what they learned and had them reading in easy readers as soon as they were able. I found it best to have them read books that were a little easy for them so they would enjoy reading.

Art Education
Degree Programs
The BS degree in Art Education is structured to give students a strong foundation in art, experience working with a variety of studio media, and thorough grounding in art education. The professional education sequence, which includes student teaching, is taken through the College of Education. The art department foundation core of beginning drawing and design courses, the art history survey, and initial courses in the department studio specializations prepare the student for advanced study in those subject areas. The curricular structure, content, and time that the program requires is consistent with that expected of a liberal arts degree. The art education requirement includes courses in both elementary and secondary art methods and materials as well as focused study of issues pertinent for art educators. Clinical experience for learning to teach art occurs in area public schools. BS candidates are required to participate in a capstone exhibition upon the completion of their programs. The art education program at MSU blends a broad-based concentration in the subject area of art with a strong professional education sequence to prepare students for the important responsibility of teaching the visual arts in the public schools.

Using Technology with Kindergarten Students A kindergarten teacher shares best practice examples of exciting activities she does using technology to enhance learning in her kindergarten classroom.
By Chris Gathers
have been teaching kindergarten for 30 years. I have taught all day every day kindergarten since 1989. I teach in a small Kansas town where the school district covers 400 square miles and the students come from diverse backgrounds. My elementary school has approximately 375 students in grades K-5 with three classes for each grade level. It is operated on a six day schedule to accommodate special classes for each classroom.
Technology is one of the biggest and most exciting changes I have seen during my teaching career. In my classroom there are three Macintosh computers for student and teacher use. My students also have access to a lab equipped with 25 Macintosh computers. A knowledgeable paraprofessional staffs the lab. I teach my own lessons when my students are using this facility. Each lesson is 30 to 45 minutes long. Sometimes the lessons I teach take several sessions to master and sometimes they don't. It all depends on the group of children.

MATH MODELS FOR UNDERSTANDING
Standards-based curriculum and instruction demand an emphasis on conceptual understandings, multiple representations and connections, mathematical modeling, and mathematical problem solving, according to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Use of manipulatives to model mathematical concepts and procedures provides the learnersboth students and teacherswith an opportunity for an experience which is visual, spatial, tactile, and kinesthetic.
Through demonstration teaching and workshops with teachers:
1) I show classroom management strategies for the introduction of math manipulatives for every concept and skill encountered in the K - 9 math curriculum.
2) I lead a progression of activities that teach learners how to perform operations with the manipulatives, that prepare learners to verbalize the procedures they are doing with the manipulatives, and that show learners how to write the standard symbolic notations to represent the math concepts and skills being modeled.
3) I demonstrate how to wean the students away from use of the manipulatives once a strong link has been established between the concrete materials and the abstract notations.
