Evolutionary Computation is the general term for several computational techniques which are based to some degree on the evolution of biological life in the natural world. My work in evolutionary computation has related to evolution of behavior . I've used evolutionary systems to create behavior control programs for artificial agents. These evolved behavior relate to steering around a simulated environment. In particular I've experimented with corridor following where evolution determines both a sensor morphology and a mapping from sensor output to steering signal. I've also experimented with evolution of players for the game of tag where fitness is based solely on competition. The most widely used form of evolutionary computation are Genetic Algorithms . In my work I've used the Genetic Programming technique which allows the evolution of executable programs. (See also: GA GP

    • Karl Sims has evolved delightful virtual creatures based on their locomotion skills, and through coevolution has created others that play a certain wrestling game. In Karl's work both the behavior and the morphology (body structure) of the creatures are determined by animation. (See also: this

To Netnews Homepage Previous Next Index ... Table of Contents Education in the New Age - Chapter II - Civilization and Culture In the field of education united action is essential. Surely a basic unity of objectives should govern the educational systems of the nations, even though uniformity of method and of techniques may not be possible. Differences of language, of background and of culture will and should always exist; they constitute the beautiful tapestry of human living down the ages. But much that has hitherto militated against right human relations must and should be eliminated. These wars, aggression and thefts which have distinguished every great nation without exception are facts and can not be denied. Surely, however, the lessons of the evils which they wrought (culminating in the war 1914-1945) can be [46] pointed out and the ancient causes of present day prejudices and dislikes can be shown and their futility emphasized. Is it not possible to build our theory of history upon the great and good ideas which have conditioned the nations and made them what they are, and emphasize the creativity which has distinguished all of them? Can we not present more effectively the great cultural epochs which - suddenly appearing in some one nation - enriched the entire world and gave to humanity its literature, its art and its vision? Two major ideas should be taught to the children of every country. They are:

This paragraph appeared in the July 1943 Beacon, much to her acute distress. After many years of protecting my identity, she made this slip and it has, therefore, been publicly stated that I am a Master. In this connection, there are three points to which I would like to call your attention. Earlier - many years earlier - I stated in A Treatise on White Magic that I was an initiate of a certain standing but that my anonymity would be preserved. Years later, owing to this mistake of [255] A.A.B., I am apparently in the position of contradicting or reversing myself and so changing my policy. Actually I am not doing so. The spread of the teaching alters circumstances and the need of humanity demands at times a changed approach. There is nothing static in the evolution of truth. It has long been my intention to do all that was necessary to bring the fact of the Hierarchy and its membership more definitely before the public and in a more arresting way. not as pictured; They do

The Koryu.com Guide to Classical Ryuha
This "Ryu Guide" is the place to start when investigating a classical Japanese martial ryu-ha. Each category includes a list of the schools that we cover (thus far) at Koryu.com. Schools are listed in more than one category when appropriate (i.e. Toda-ha Buko-ryu will be listed both under naginatajutsu and kusarigamajutsu). Each ryu listing contains basic information on the tradition, including the founder, date founded, and systems taught, as well as references to photographs and articles here at Koryu.com, relevant books, and links to appropriate web sites. We will continue to add new material to this list from our archives and research. All listed ryu-ha have one thing in commonthey are authentic Japanese warrior traditions. Virtually all are members of the Nihon Kobudo Shinkokai (Society for the Promotion of the Japanese Classical Martial Arts) or the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai (Japanese Classical Martial Arts Association), the two most respected and well-established organizations devoted to koryu in Japan. All are included in the standard Japanese reference sources. Please keep in mind, however, that this list is by no means comprehensive. Many of the hundreds of extant classical traditions are not yet listed, so the fact that a school's name does not appear means relatively little. Those that are listed, we can and do "vouch for."

The graphite, or "lead pencil," ubiquitous today as a drawing and writing medium, was first used by draftsmen in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The misnomer "lead pencil" is derived from the similarity of its line to that of the lead stylus and suggests that it was the successor of that medium. Graphite was first discovered around 1560 in Burrowdale (Cumberland) in England. It was at first favoured by architectural draftsmen, but became widespread as a general drawing material. This book is excellent for those artists who need practice drawing the human figure because the book has so many progressive pictures to look at and utilize. The section for "hands" is very good showing the artist, by example, how to go about starting each finger and on to the thumb and how to attach them to the hand. Each of the sections on the figure is self contained with several sketches with varying views (top, side, etc.) I have a hard time with specific components of the figure and this book has made everything very clear and helpful.

Watercolor workshops are designed for beginning and intermediate adult watercolorists and generally cover basic watercolor techniques including preparation, washes, color mixing and masking. Each workshop features one or more demonstrations but plenty of time is devoted to questions and individual assistance. Painting time is usually organized so that participants should be able to complete one painting in each workshop day. A workshop supply list is available online or as a PDF download Workshop participants receive a folder with an assortment of articles and related information with room for notes on demonstrations. By special arrangement, all papers and use of brushes, paints and incidental materials can be provided so that those attending need only bring themselves. This has the advantage of letting everyone try the same high-quality materials to accomplish painting techniques. A muti-day workshop can be scheduled to coordinate with an evening talk for the group or a larger audience. If an appropriately sized television is available, a full presentation is possible on a variety of subjects from art history to framing techniques, professional artists' issues, art on the Internet or woodland seasons.

Gift of Robert Arneson and Sandra Shannonhouse, 1990 ABOUT THE ARTIST Born in Benicia, California in 1930, Robert Arneson was encouraged by his father to draw. He became a proficient draftsman early in life and drew cartoons for a local newspaper as a teenager. After Arneson studied art education at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland he taught in a local high school, where he became interested in ceramics. He went on to receive an MFA from Mills College in 1958. Arneson became head of the ceramics department at the University of California at Davis in 1962 and became a full professor of art in 1973. ABOUT THE ART General Nuke addresses nuclear holocaust at a time of escalating tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, when both nations had temporarily abandoned negotiations on arms control. Arneson's image of General Nuke presents an aggressive, caustic stereotype of a military leader. With bloody fangs and a phallic MX "peacekeeper"missile for its nose, the snarling head wears the helmet of a three-star general, which is covered with a global military map incised with abbreviations for the available nuclear weapons: ICBM, IRBM, ACLM, SLBM. Some of the inscriptions ridicule those who, in Arneson's view, foster war, while other markings provide facts about the impact of a one-megaton bomb ("Fallout: lethal 600 sq. mi., death risk 2000 sq. mi."). Even the pedestal is part of the message: the head is mounted on a bronze column depicting hundreds of charred, stacked corpses. It rests on a base of granite, a pedestal traditionally used for memorials.

Instructor
Geno Andrews is a freelance designer/problem-solver for his clients in the Los Angeles area. The son of a traditional press operator, Andrews committed himself to fine art to escape from the mundane world of traditional typesetting, camera-ready art, tedious cut and paste and offset printing. In the late 1980s, his traditional fine art segued to digital design. His first job, ironically, was teaching the art department at a L.A.-based newspaper how to use the computer to replace traditional typesetting, camera ready art, cut and paste, and deliver a new approach to offset printing. Since then, Andrews has been at the forefront of the digital revolution. From his early involvement in interactive CD-ROMs (Verbum Interactive, The Journeyman Project) to creating musical media for designers (Hi Rez Audio) to print and design, consulting and teaching (Brooks College) and Web and Flash design, Andrews stays at the cutting edge of these creative fields.
