Japanese Civil Rights Group Apologizes To WWII Draft Resisters

W hen President Roosevelt mandated the internment of 110,000 Japanese Americans during World War II, 315 Japanese Americans decided to protest the executive order by resisting the war draft.
At the time, the draft resisters were denounced by leaders in the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL). Saburo Kido, then president of JACL, said in 1944, 'The group definitely should be charged with sedition, especially the leaders.'
Now, more than half a decade later, the nation's oldest Asian-American civil rights group will apologize in a public ceremony that has been more than two years in the making. The ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place May 11 in San Francisco, Calif., and will include remarks by resisters.
"The organization should've made the apology long ago," said John Tadashi, JACL's national director. "Many of these men are in their 80s now. The time has come to put this behind us."
The ceremony marks a watershed moment for the Japanese American community, which many believe was shattered by Executive Order 9066. Frank Abe, director and producer of the PBS documentary "Conscience and the Constitution", which details the story of the draft resisters, points out that these men were almost written out of history.

Civil Rights News "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness ..." - from the Declaration of Independence. Our founding fathers laid the groundwork more than 200 years ago. Unfortunately, these "unalienable Rights" did not apply to African Americans (slavery was still legal at the time) or women (who could not vote). African, Hispanic, and Asian Americans have spent the last two centuries fighting for equality in the eyes of the law, law enforcement, courts, and public opinion. The black Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s galvanized the nation and led to sweeping legislation - the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Today, a new Civil Rights movement is underway to continue the work of its predecessor.

    Bigotry and Violence Against Asian Americans
    In 1986 the Commission drew attention to the problem of bigotry and violence against Asian Americans [1]. Our investigation shows that bigotry and violence against Asian Americans remains a serious national problem today. This report has recounted numerous incidents of bigotry and violence against Asian Americans. These incidents include the vicious bias-related murders of Vincent Chin, Jim Loo, Navroze Mody, and Hung Truong, and the recent massacre of Southeast Asian schoolchildren in Sacramento California; attacks on Asian American homes and places of worship; racially motivated boycotts against Asian-owned businesses; racial harassment of Asian Americans on college campuses; and racial slurs made by public figures, one of whom was a candidate for governor. The incidents reported here are by no means exhaustive: for every incident reported here, there are many more that have not been reported.     The country is in the throes of the largest migration in American history. PURPOSE
    On October 4-5, 2002 CRP hosted a roundtable to provide a forum for a strategic planning session on current civil rights issues, to help map advocacy and research agendas for the coming decade, and to consider the broader role of Asian Americans in advancing racial and ethnic integration in America. The roundtable was designed for a select group of scholars, lawyers, and civil rights advocates for the purposes of:
