College of Ethnic Studies Undergraduate Programs
The Asian American Studies Department, the largest of four departments in the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, was established in fall 1969 as a result of the Third World Student Strike. The Department currently consists of five Asian American ethnic units: Chinese American, Filipino American, Japanese American, Korean American, and Vietnamese American. It is a full service academic unit that offers a comprehensive program of study on the Asian American experience with a commitment to serving the University, its students, and the Asian American communities. At present, the Department offers fifty sections of classes taught by a faculty of twenty-plus to approximately two thousand students each semester. Students may take Asian American Studies courses for a baccalaureate major or minor, and to partially fulfill Liberal Studies major, general education, and University statutory graduation requirements. A master's degree program is pending final approval from the California State University Chancellor's Office. In 1994, the Asian Pacific American Education Advisory Committee of the Chancellor's Office recognized and acknowledged the Asian American Studies Department at San Francisco State University as an "exemplary" program.

Beginning Library Research on ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES
Stanford University Libraries contain many titles on the historical and contemporary experience of Asian Americans, making it an excellent place for students conducting research in this area. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of Asian American, relevant titles are often dispersed throughout the general collection depending upon subject matter. Use Socrates , Stanford's online catalog to to locate books and other materials. Use the library's print or electronic indexes to locate journal and newspaper articles and published papers. Socrates can tell you what library materials Stanford owns and where they are located, allowing you to search by author, title, call number, organization, or subject. When searching Socrates , it helps to know the Library of Congress Subject Headings. One method of identifying the subject headings is to check the Library of Congress Subject Headings bound volumes. Another (online) method is to locate material you know is on your topic by doing an author (A) and/or title (T) search. Then look at the full display to see what

Beyond Culture: Communicating with Asian American Children and Families. ERIC/CUE Digest Number 94.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION In recent decades, migration waves have brought to the United States large numbers of Asians and Pacific Islanders (API). Well over two-fifths of all nonamnesty persons admitted in the U.S. in 1991 were API (Barkan, 1992). The trend of increasing API immigration is clear: the API portion in the U.S. total immigration steadily grew from the 1972's 28.7 percent to 1985's 44.2 percent (Barkan, 1992). Consequently, API student enrollment has been increasing drastically. In 1979, 217,000 enrolled 8-15 year old APIs were identified as language minorities; by 1989, the number had reached 547,000 (National Center for Education Statistics, 1992). With their drastically different cultural backgrounds, API children's schooling poses a challenge to educators and the society. To explore the complexities of communication with API children and their families, this digest describes the overt and covert dimensions of the various API cultures, and discusses APIs' socioeconomic background and life experiences that affect their communication behavior. The goal is to help practitioners improve communication with APIs and, thus, more effectively educate API children.

Asian American W3935x. Locating South Asians Diasporas. 4 pts.
This course will explore the time-space of "South Asian diasporas" through local, national and transnational perspectives. To consider the imaginaries formed through migration as diasporic is already to suggest that peoples on the move see themselves and the world within multiple narratives, just as it implies that specific forms of belonging remain powerful long after physical dislocations have occurred.

The Education of Asian/Pacific American Students
Asian/Pacific American students have always been portrayed as overachievers because of their high levels of educational attainment, especially in math and science. The emphasis on educational success has often been linked to Asian family values, beliefs, and practices. The cultural respect for education, teachers, and hard work has been identified quite often with various Asian/Pacific American groups: Cambodian, Chinese, East Indian, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Pakistani, Vietnamese. Yet, in order to have a better understanding of their educational experience, educational researchers are advocating further investigation into the variables affecting school acculturation and achievement patterns for Asian/Pacific American students. The following sites take a closer look at the academic performance of Asian/Pacific American students by examining their relationships to teachers, parents, and schools.

What is the agency's history and purpose?
The Asian American Civic Association (AACA), formerly known as the Chinese American Civic Association, has been active in Boston's Asian community for the past 27 years. The past two decades has seen vast growth in the Asian community and AACA has also grown in order to meet the community's changing needs. AACA was born in 1967 as an organization to meet the social and cultural needs of first and second generation Chinese Americans. In the early 1970's, it became the major social planning and cultural advocacy agency in Chinatown, out of which evolved the South Cove Community Health Center and the Chinese Golden Age Center, as well as AACA's present existing programs. In 1979, AACA increased its commitment to include refugees froim Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In 1982, the agency expanded to include prevocational skills training for immigrants and refugees. In 1984, AACA also expanded its services to include vocational training. In 1988, the agency inaugurated workplace education programs for newcomers in the workforce. In 1991, an External Diploma Program was offered as alternative remedial high school education. AACA's fundamental purpose is to help Asian immigrants and refugees to successfully adjust to life and achieve economic self-sufficiency in the United States. To accomplish this purpose, AACA operates three programs:
